Do not like this song. Even Meat can't make it one I would choose to listen to.

I think Masculine is quite okay actually, but one of the worst Meat songs ever IMO from that album is "Burning down". I always skip that one, blehhh.

This live arrangement is worse than the other one. At least that has the Masculine, Masculine, Masculine bit at the end.

Interesting question would be: why do the people (who have posted above) not like Masculine?

Meat should do more 80's inspired rock. Since everyone nowadays does that anyway. My God I am starting to think every band is just trying to imitate Barenaked Ladies while playing Bruce Springsteen rock.

Indeed. Why is this a rehearsal and not simply "live"? Is there evidence this wasn't recorded at a live show?

Btw. I don't mind the live version. I think it's ok.

The Bat 2 single B-sides were recorded at the rehearsals for the Bat 2 tour. There's an audience of about 10 by the sound of it.

I agree. Musically it comes across as nothing very special, and the lyrics? I'm with you. They have no appeal to me .. get tough, play rough, grab her by the hair ... and that's masculine? Old fashioned macho perhaps .. manly? Not to me ;) And no love song in my eyes.

I find it to be quite dull and I'm not a fan of the lyrics either.

The audience is fake

On Took The Words you can hear meat say "Ok.. I bet you say that to.. all the boys" and theres no sing along.

All Revved Up and Two out of three have almost no audience at all.

Heaven Can wait you can clearly hear the audience cut off abruptly.

However it must upset you tremendously knowing that the song was never played since the late 80s / early 90s tours and most likely never will be again going by the protests above. :-P

^ agree with this. The lyrics clearly are not meant to be taken literally and/or seriously :P I'd be kind of surprised if they were, really. And as for the structure of the song -- I'd take it over a lot of the 2006 + material any day.

I prefer it the other way round and would sooner listen to a lot of the more recent material than a lot of the Meat Loaf songs that came out of the 80's.

In all honesty it doesnt. I joke and I kid and I pretend to demand it but the tuth is Im fine with whatever meat does and performs.

Yeha Im sick of break it, but thats about it. Whats no joke is masculine is legitimately my third favorite ML song and i love it the same way most people love It just wont quit, FCOL, or Objects.

If Meat ever were to do it, Itd be an inside joke or something. if he did even a little peice of it, I can just imagine everyones response form the fanclub. the rest of the audience wouldnt know what to make of it.

Aside from the inside joke Masculine is the signature tune of the 1986-1991 tour golden years. It should stay that way and never be seen again. Meat's current voice wouldnt mesh too well with the song (Dont think im implying anything cause im not and never have)

Considering the attention so often paid here to the lyrics of Meat's recorded songs, I'm a bit surprised that these should not be taken as they stand. However, you said it would be interesting to know why people didn't like this song, and some of us explained why :-)

I agree. And after Dead Ringer the 80s albums didn't have Platinum impact here. I have them, play them, but many of the songs don't for me hold a candle to Neighbourhood, CHSIB and Meat's latest two albums.

That doesn't really make an awful lot of sense, Caryl. You're commenting on the fact that lyrics are frequently up for interpretation on this board while within the same sentence stating that you're surprised how the lyrics to Masculine haven't been taken at face value. :roll:

Not what I meant .. I said "attention" .. songs seem to be often judged on the basis of the lyrics as well as the music. Rather than ignore them, or decide they should not be taken as written, I listen to them and in this case find them a bit distasteful, and at odds with the man singing them.

Absolutely fine. I'm lucky that all of Meat's more recent work is so much to my taste :-)

Apologies - it wasn't clear, but I see your meaning :-) And I agree with the last part of your reply about the lyrics and the man, which is why I've always taken the lyrics to Masculine as satirical, kind of a view-point critique if you like. A fun song that pokes fun at its own narrator/protagonist/character/misogyny in general.

I'll always find Masculine to me nothing more than atypical, embarrassing, faintly misogynistic '80's c*ck rock. Aggressively stupid and without a trace of irony. If Masculine did one thing, it's to make California Isn't Big Enough (which I see as a parody of that subgenre) even funnier than it already is.

Masculine may be unique in the Meat Loaf catalog, but outside of his work, songs like this were ten a penny at the time.

I don't particularly regard Masculine as a bad song. It's just that I think about 80% of Meat's back catalogue is much better. ;-)

Thanks .. that's exactly it for me :-) Perhaps it's more obvious to any woman trying to forge a career in the 70s/80s, but that air of misogynism is what one was up against, lacks irony, didn't sit well then, doesn't sit well with me now.

Exactly :-) So wholly and daftly over the top it can amuse :-) Plus it's about the overwhelming feelings of the guy singing it, rather than his attitude towards others I think

Back to the topic : CarylB I thank you for giving me woman's point of view - now my enthusiasm to this song is on lower level ... but still, I think (maybe even more) that "Masculine" should be in the set list. Why? It would be a good pretext to explain lyrics and give people different point of views. ;)

I've got it by jove! I've figured out the precise reason this song doesn't appeal to me. No drama. None. Meat isn't stretched, the band isn't stretched. I'm not bothered either way.
