Meat is celebrating it in Cleveland, and according to this article, there will be special guests.... WHO??

The only people this really could be referring to are Todd Rundgren or Steinman.

If that's the case, I'd love for Meat to add Heaven Can Wait into the setlist for this one show. They could do it together with just piano and vocals. Celebrating the 35th anniversary of the album with a performance of the first song written for the album would be pretty amazing :cool:

This is also true. Although I s'pose, considering it's the anniversary of the album, it'd sort of make sense for them to do the whole thing anyway :P

I'd like for them to do the whole album. And then put it out on CD for all to purchase along with a host of other goodies. :twisted:

Why? He was probably the third most important person involved with BOOH. Without him you probably wouldn't know who ML or (possibly) JS are...

Early on, Rundgren appeared weary. He apologized for his voice, saying, "Just pretend you're at a Meatloaf show."

...I don't exactly love Todd's voice and his last album sucked. I'd pick Meat's voice on a bad day any day over Todd's.

I'd also pick Todd's guitar playing over Meat's any day. :bleh:

The article, like online forums, gives no indication how the joke was said. It's very hard to get the right inflection into the written word, and what might be said in the spirit of leg pulling can be taken as serious insult.
He might well have intended to be insulting, but as I wasn't there and didn't hear how it was said, i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'd be happy to see him appear at a Meat Loaf concert.

But at the same time, i've never bought a concert ticket to watch someone play guitar before (although I did go and see violin player Vannessa Mae in concert :bleh: ).


Back to the main topic of the thread though, I think it's really exciting that there will be special guests, and I only hope that they live up to expectation (people who are connected in some way to Bat).
Jim Steinman would be the ultimate, of course, and although I was at first sceptical that he might make an apperance, it occured to me that not so long ago Meat gave the speech at Jimmys induction into the SWHOF, so perhaps they have kept in contact since then and cooked up this idea between them. All it would take is for one of them so say "Hey, you know what would be cool.........."

I wonder if Ellen would be part of this?
From documentries i've seen she doesn't seem too fond of her ML days, and doesn't seem to have left under happy circumstances.

Another guess (from the non Bat world) would be Brian May.
Meat has worked with Brian twice now (A Time For Heroes and on Bat III) and Brian seems to have formed a really good relationship with Paul ever since Paul played the Las Vegas production of WWRY, so i'd not discount him.

Phil Spector was a big influence on Meat & Jim, do you think they'd let him out of chokey for the night? :bleh:

Karla DeVito come on down. As for Meat's guitar playing has anyone actually heard him play? What he has on stage appears to be mainly a prop. I remember on the 1993 VH1 video they made it look like Meat and Pat Thrall were playing dueling parts of "Life Is A Lemon" but I never thought that was really Meat playing.

On a related note to this. I got myself a little excited last night by realising that Meat also said that he was making an announcement of some sort in October (which could be at this concert, if it's relevant...). The fact that they're suddenly on good enough terms to potentially do a performance together gets my hopes up about what this announcement might be :cool:

Unless he comes out and says something really bad just take it as a ribbing between two men who have worked together on numerous occasions. They may have had their fights but they're have respect for each other. I believe they have both criticized each other (to my recollection), but if anybody can do it to each other it's those two.

For the record I think that Todd also has an amazing voice and he's a hell of a guitar player. Great producer and arranger as well. He deserves an immense amount of respect for what he has contributed to ML's career and music in general.

I would predict an all BOOH or all Steinman show. I could be wrong.

i love meat, and i was just defensive because that's what i do for my friends, i stick up for them :) No, before that comment I didn't think Todd was all that bad of a guy. And ya, its just ribbing, if he was ribbing about Neil Young not being able to sing I wouldn't care - his voice has seen its ups and downs too (or in certain peoples opininion, just DOWNS), but Neil Young wouldn't give a ~~~~ because he's confident and he's *knows hes an amazing artist*. Meat's confident too, but I know he'd probably get upset by that because he's sensitive, so yah I think I'm gonna have his back on this one :) I know I'd want it if it was me.

When he looked at me, snickered, and said "this one's for you bat boy" right before he played the guitar solo in Just One Victory in Sandusky... Todd is no fan of Meat. A lot of his core fans are not fans of Meat...a lot of them went to see Meat just because of Kasim.

Todd having respect for someone, that is funny. He had three of the original members of Utopia on stage with him at the show I saw and still had to "count in" all of the songs and would direct the entire band like a symphony conductor. I really think the musicians were far more capable than he gave them credit for. It really turned me off.

I'll give you all but the voice and not so sure I would say "music in general" when talking about Todd. He is not that universal. Todd should really consider putting Kasim up on lead vocals more and give his worn chops the break they deserve. However, Todd can kill it on a guitar solo and he put together a good show the tour I saw. That said, I won't spend my money on him again.

That said, I enjoy the "Liars" album from Todd, but that is about as far as my fandom for him goes.

I'm not a Todd Rundgren fan but some comments on here are not any better than the presumed insult they criticize. This thread is called "35th anniversary of Bat" - it seems to have turned into a discussion aimed at slagging off the album's producer.

Statements like this will probably fall on deaf ears on a forum that asks you to voice your opinion "in a respectful manner" in bold red letters on top of the page but allows members to call people "piece of shit".

He's your "friend"? So he comes over to your house for coffee and cookies from time to time? Gives you a call? Goes fishing with you? Wow, what a lucky fellow you are... :))

If he is why do you have to "defend", "protect", "stick up for", whatever him and get worked up about a comment made by someone you obviously don't care about?

Fans have got a way of creating division from other fans and fanning the flames much hotter and longer than the person they claim to champion.
Todd Rundgren and Meat, I don't know much about their relationship, and I don't think it's my need or right too.
I love Meat as an artist and follow his career closely. Todd, I don't follow so much, but I respect him, and i'm thankful to him, for the work he did with Bat Out Of Hell.
That's all I feel I need to know.
Everything else is between Meat and Todd.

I've never seen Utopia, but how does him counting in the songs and or directing the band indicate a lack of respect? Springsteen still "counts in" practically every song after thirty-something years with the same musicians, I think as much for himself as for the rest of the band. I don't think he lacks any confidence in their abilities at all- quite the opposite. A strong bandleader is exactly that- you know the players' strengths and use them to their advantage. Some bands play strictly rehearsed songs, others are a bit more spontaneous.

As for Todd, I've heard Kasim say he's a very sarcastic person by nature.

As to the topic, I would love to see something special being done for the anniversary- I think the album was too important not to acknowledge it in some way.

Think Kasim will be back? Maybe an Ellen? Cher? I'm throwin' out names!

Why Cher? She wasn't involved with Bat 1. Neither was Brian May, for that matter.

Two observations:

1) Has anyone properly read the article I wonder?

It states

So speculation about Jim, Roy, Todd etc appearing at the concert would appear to be someway off the mark I think (although not perhaps 100% ruled out).

2) The endless dropping to the gutter level to slate someone who apparently has said something not to complimentary about Meat is getting tiresome... disagree with the opinion fine (round here pretty much all of us will in this case that's a given), but when it descends to the level it has done where it's a character assassination, it's not acceptable.

Will be interested to see who appears at the show. And hopefully if there are some interesting names we will get some audio of it somewhere down the line

I don't know of any connection to BOOH, but Sammy did write Amnesty Is Granted for Welcome To The Neighborhood ;)

See my post above, the connection as I see it is that the special guests are those who have influenced Meat in his career, I'm sure I remember an inteview years ago (and I'm talking before the internet here, which most except Michael won't remember:)) ) where Meat talked about how much he admired and respected Sammy Hagar and that there were influences he drew from him.

I'm picturing some people expecting big names who have never intended to be there. Maybe some surprises show up, but I wouldn't go expecting anyone who is not formally announced. Working too many guests into the show may not be an easy task is another consideration.
