Should Meat record every Steinman song ever written? Good idea?
 

Hi guys,

Well I was having a think (which is dangerous) and would anybody think it would be a good idea if Meat recorded every Jim Steinman song ever written?
I know, obviously, Meat has recorded a lot of Steinman's songs but what about the ones he hasn't recorded?

If they were all put on a CD would you buy it? Could it be the Meat/Steinman project that would be the reunion since the fall out and reconciliation over Bat 3? Could this idea be the conclusion to the Bat Out Of Hell thing that Meat has mentioned in interviews before?

What do you think?

I would love that, but I really don't see Meat performing 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', but than again I never saw him doing IACBTMN, so crazier things have happened.

There are some that I think he would sound great on such as "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All"or "Faster Than The Speed Of Night".

I imagine that there are demos out there somewhere with him performing some of these songs.

I think Total Eclipse of the Heart would have an amazing arrangement!!!

sounds great, but youd need way more then one CD (maybe more then three!)

as for TEOMH, Patti being lead and Meat doing the "turn around"s wouldnt be bad at all.

If it's on a Meat Loaf solo album it would make more sense to do the arrangement from DOTV, so that ML could get some real singing in and he's not relegated to background vocals.

-We're Still the Children
-What Part of My Body Hurts the Most
-Braver Than We Are
-Making Love out of Nothing At All

The rest I'm indifferent towards :P Total Eclipse could be cool though if done like the Tanz arrangement that was linked above. It's more of a duet that way, and Patti would sound amazing on it O.O

Jim will never agree with it though, sadly.

I'm not sure what it is, but if Jim allows some of the horrible versions (Westlife, Kristen French) to be released I don't see why his most most successful collaborator doing a version such a big deal.

What I don't get is if Meat n Jim are still good friends (as ML claims) than I don't see why more of his material doesn't get recorded. I assume that it's still going back to the issues surrounding Bat 3.

Why not?

It could be because of the bat 3 stuff or it could be because it takes Jimmy ages to write songs and arrangements.
If you read on Wikipedia on Jim's page it says that he has saaid he has written more songs and cant see why Meat cant sing them. So maybe it will happen!!!

The title to this thread is miss leading, I vote for it to be changed.

Thing is, songs like What Part of My Body and Still the Children have existed for around a decade now, and they still haven't really been touched outside of the Dream Engine performances in 2005 / 2006. I can understand why they weren't used for Bat 3, but that was five or so years ago now. The Dream Engine isn't doing anything with them, and I'll be very, very surprised if the arrangements aren't already done and recorded, collecting dust in some vault somewhere :shrug: Unless I'm mistaken, he hasn't really done anything at all since Tanz in the late 90s, despite the 'fact' that there's a Bat musical coming. I can't see why Jim is letting them rot when he's evidently not doing much with them. Apparently there's an official Dream Engine recording of What Part of My Body in existence somewhere. Can't see why Jim couldn't even just take the vocals off that, send the instrumental track to Meat and have him record his vocals on it. It could be done in an hour.

Meat has said that he wants to work with Jim again, but Jim doesn't won't to do an album right now. Maybe Jim is just unofficially retired these days and doesn't want anything else to do with the music industry?

All that he needs to do is give him the songs. Jim has only written AND produced 2 full albums, so he's no stranger to letting other simply do his music.

I came across this cover of "Nowhere Fast" (SOF version) by this shitty Rock band recorded recently. Assuming that they didn't commit copyright infringement, Jim is obviously licencing his music on a lower scale.

Well, as long as you pay the royalties, you're free to record any previously released song you want. No need to personally license it from the songwriter. Who may not even be the one who holds the copyright to the song, which could be owned by some publishing company.

Also, to the original question: no.

I can't see Meat doing songs like Ravishing, Rebel Without a Clue, Holding Out for a Hero, Tonight is What it Means to be Young, Safe Sex or Faster Than the Speed of Night in a way that does those songs justice. Unless Jim can completely rearrange them to fit Meat, that is. Which I don't seem happening anytime soon.

I thought that Jimmy was pretty anal about keeping rights to his songs after the whole BOOH thing where neither ML or JS were getting any royalties?. It was also a reason why Celine Dion didn't do 'Is Nothing Sacred'

He doesn't seem like a guy who would sell his publishing rights.

Is Nothing Sacred wasn't released at the time, so Celine had to work with Jim to get the song. More info on that here.

And Jim sold (part) of his publishing to (I thought) Universal Music Publishing.

Songs like Rebel Without A Clue and Ravishing are fabulous. But should stay there i.e as Bonnie Tyler songs.
IACBTMN was great as the original ( Pandoras Box) but were Celine's and Meat's versions on a par.
If Meat had sung it first, then followed by the other two, we may be saying the opposite.
I think what I am trying to say is that when I like a Steinman original I am not always keen on it being rehashed.
When BOOH2 was released (great album though it is) I recall being slightly miffed when scanning the tracklist because of the duplication of old stuff.
So, yes, record more of Jim's stuff, but new material please!!

See I disagree. I like some of the re-recorded stuff. Like No Matter What, everyone heard the Boyzone version first but Meat's version was better. So it could be possible that they would be better

I agree with you on this one.
There are 2 reasons for this. Firstly, I think they came out at roughly the same time so I thought Boyzone were nicking Meat's song!
And much more importantly - I got married shortly after that and it was our first dance at our wedding.

I think it should happen, whether it take up 3 CDs, 4CDs or however many CDs!!! It could be a new project and we all know Meat and Jim have a spark that doesn't happen to any other artist!!!

Shouldn't happen and won't happen. I hold out a glimmer of hope for one last song ("Body") probably from a version Jim already has done. Maybe a couple of songs tops. Jim isn't going to produce anything anytime soon. He may still be scribbling stuff on the backs of napkins but that is all I can imagine he is doing. I think it would be sad for what is potentially the last Meat Loaf album not to have a "new" Steinman song on it even though it may overshadow the rest of the album. Meat seems to be on a roll doing his own thing successfully, he has his own studio now and I hope even if he stops touring that he will keep recording which he can do at his own pace if he can keep a distribution deal. I think Meat still has gas in the tank, Jim appears to be on empty.

But Meat AND Jim have both expressed interest in working on another project together!!! A million and one fans want it to happen but it was just an idea. It would be something that I would definitely buy and would love to have!!!

If they both want it to happen than it will. As someone else said, Jim is on empty.

It's just speculation, but I think he may be completely done with the music industry. Bat3 was the last straw.

No because if you read Meat's autobiography he states that Jim takes forever to write songs and that back in 1983/1984 the record comany (Arista, I think) wanted a Steinman/Meat album out but weren't prepared to wait for Jim to write an album of songs.

True, but JS still put out music during that period. He wasn't stagnant like is now.

And in the end they only had 4 brand new Steinman songs for BOOH2. That's a long time to wait for 4 songs.

I completely agree with you. But as far as we know he's stagnant but how do we know he isn't writing new material? We dont. Meat and Jim both reckon they will work with each other again before they call time on their careers and I cant see any reason to disbelieve that yet. Thing could change but I hope they dont!

We all hope. The only thing that makes me skeptical is the amount of abandoned projects lately by Jim: Batman (even though that was by WB), The Dream Engine, Karine Hannahs record, Bonnie Tylers last record and of course The BOOH Musical which appears to be abandoned.

I hope that he's writing new stuff, but there's no sign of... Anything.

This I agree with wholeheartedly. I don't want to knock Jim Steinman, but I just don't see much evidence of him delivering these days. Meat on the other hand has worked continuously through all the years since BOOH, toured relentlessly, issued albums, kept moving forward, and has found his own new style, which I love and hope to hear more of. I have many Steinman songs which Meat has recorded. I love them, but I have them and don't need some gigantic compendium of them all over again, nor do I feel the need to have others added.

Yes, Meat always holds the door open to recording with Jim again. That's the kind of man he is. He knows what he owes to their partnership and their friendship, and he honours it. But I think to take that as an indication they will be working together again (let alone on something of this scale) is an assumption that is flawed, and I don't frankly see the extensive and time-consuming project that the original question asked in this thread would take to be likely to happen. I'd prefer that time to be devoted to Meat continuing in his new style frankly, bringing me fresh material, new arrangements, and continuing his new adventure in rock and roll.

Not sure where the million and one comes from ;) There may be a number of the far lesser sized group on this forum who want this to happen. But deduct one ;)

If, someday, they had a new project, I think a lot of people would be interested in it, including Meat! I'd buy a new Meat and Jim album because I would buy a new Meat Loaf album. I don't think Meat needs to record every song ever written by Jim. It was a great union but not a necessary one for the Meat's long-term, current, and future career. BAOH launched Meat and catapulted him into rock history but sometime's it's time to focus and move forward, onward and upward. Full-steam ahead. Never look back. Oh my, coffee, fast.

But you asked what we thought, and must expect that not all of us will necessarily share your view :-) No-one's said it's a crap idea .. Some agree with you .. but some of us don't. That's what happens. And anyway we represent just a small percentage of Meat's worldwide fanbase

And it's not "silly". Have you seen some of Warrio's threads and polls? :lol::lol::lol: It got people thinking and expressing their views; no-one got angry, no-one got hurt .. and for those reasons alone it was a fair question to ask ;)
