US National Anthem - Meat Loaf Style!

A friend who knew that I had attended the Meat Loaf concert recently in Orlando, FL, sent me the following link. I had completely forgotten about Meat doing the National Anthem at the 1994 Major League All-Star game in Pittsburgh, PA at Three Rivers Stadium. Many recording artists have badly butchered this song. This may be the absolute best version that I have ever seen.

I absolutely agree ... it's the best version that I've ever seen.
Thanks to Warioloaf for posting it on YouTube ... and thanks to you RaysScout
for posting the link :-)

Vicki....I've heard it done thousands of times in ballparks all across the US. Most performers try to re-invent the song and wind up butchering it. Meat Loaf's performance was tasteful, respectful......and he got ALL the words correct. Not to mention....it just sounded great!

I need to get him down to Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, FL sometime, to one for a Tampa Bay Rays game.

Definitely !! It would give me an excuse to fly to Florida again :))

Wario 15 Sep 2010 00:41

I wonder how meat would fair doing this today at the major leagues or something....

JaysScout 15 Sep 2010 00:44

Thanks for posting on Youtube WarioLoaf!!! I'm glad my friend was able to find it. I'm betting he'd STILL do a great job.

Vicki.....I have connections. :) If Meat ever wanted to do it......it could happen.

suzieq 15 Sep 2010 03:29

Roadtrip! How does next baseball season sound? RaysScout you can have a National Anthem singer booked? Consider PM'ing Meat about it, I'd love to see him do it again!!!

I think I'd have a very good shot at getting it done. Do you really think he'd do it?

Try sending him a PM about it :-)

Steve6 15 Sep 2010 21:01

It was a brilliant version of the American national anthem, and one of the best I've ever heard. Meat did say this was one of the highlights of his career too. I thought he looked a bit nervous at the start but I wouldn't blame him.

robgomm 15 Sep 2010 23:12

Wow that was amazing! I'm a brit but that me incredibely proud to see that! Amazing. You should ask him to do it again if possible.

LP 15 Sep 2010 23:38

Look into your hearts and ask yourself if he could really pull that off now?!

The footage from the new tour is amazing, don't get me wrong, but around the time of that clip he had complete control of his voice and slotted into each note. I've noticed that when Meat sang like this, 1987 -1994, it seemed to take enormous physical energy to achieve what he wanted. But achieve it he did. Maybe age just gets hold of us. Muscles wear.

I'm 31 and I'm starting to notice little things. Meat is double my age.

I saw him perform in Orlando, FL on August 30, 2010. He could pull it off!!!

suzieq 16 Sep 2010 02:40

Hands down, Meat can totally pull off the National Anthem as he is right now! Which is en fuego! Don't judge a vocal totally by you tube footage....and if you do, you are liable to send RedPony Tours after everyone of them taking them down one by one.

Does Meat usually respond to PM's?

Hey, I said that the footage from the new tour is amazing!!

I just don't think he has the vocal control to pull it off. I would absolutely love to be proved wrong as I still consider him the best performer I've ever seen.

I read it right the first time, yes, the footage is amazing however live is more so. So where are you hearing a lack of vocal control? When was it? and Why do you think he can't pull it off?

Eric Vetro has worked with Meat since his National Anthem was done and I have reason to think that Meat could do it again because of his vocal training. Meat's vocals are strong, confident, and controlled. I was answering the question...in your heart could he do it again? And in my heart I say YES ~ at the same, if not better, caliber!

I am anxious to see if Meat's interested in doing it again. :-)

I'm sure I won't make friends with this statement but I agree with LP. I think Meat's vocals were stronger in the 1990s. I like the current sound of his voice but he has adopted a style of singing that doesn't do it justice, in my opinion. If he did the National Anthem now it probably would sound good, but not as impressive as it did back then, I assume.

hes learning to look after it more i guess? less operatics.

He's 62 nearly 63, so lets be realistic here his voice isn't going to be near as strong as it was 20 years ago. He's been singing like an opera singer for nearly 40 years, it's just not possible to hold that power.
Would he be able to sing the National Anthem nowadays the answer is of course, but would it sound as good as it was in 1994? Not possible in my opinion.

Wario 17 Sep 2010 19:40

come to think of it come the UK leg, hell be "sexty-three" not "sexty-two"

Sarge 17 Sep 2010 20:02

Considering the contradictory info he has provided regarding his year of birth, I'm not sure about that. ;)

Well, he'll be "sexty-???" until he's seventy...then he'll have to come up with something for that decade. Sexenty doesn't roll off the tongue as easy ;).

I actually like all the opinions that say Meat can't do this National Anthem thing, because it may give Meat an inspiration to prove some people wrong.

A Slice Of English 17 Sep 2010 20:27

How about "Heaven-ty"?

Good one. Could be taken as one decade closer to getting into heaven, however I'm going to think Heavenly for Heaventy. ;)

PanicLord 17 Sep 2010 23:52

I get moved, and I'm from the UK. Phenomenal performance.

nikox1 17 Sep 2010 23:55

well im sure Meat takes note of all the vocal coaches around here, the experienced live performers etc etc,,

Sarge 18 Sep 2010 00:37

I'm not a vocal coach but I have ears and I know what I've heard in recent years and I know what I heard in the 1990s. Anybody who claims that there hasn't been a change in Meat Loaf's vocals obviously hasn't been to any concerts before the turn of the century.

the vocal coach thing was not directed at you, ive been at 10 concerts and december will be my 11th, and i have always enjoyed the shows. people get older, so do voices, but i have no doubt Meat could sing the USA anthem right now. he sings 12 minute live songs every second night on tour? HCTB are some of the best vocals hes ever done on an album.

If Meat did the National Anthem again, would it be different: YES

Would it probably be great: YES

Change yes absolutely. I just got done watching Aretha Franklin's National Anthems 10 years ago and at the Inauguration of Obama. Change even for females. She can do it. Why not Meat?

I wouldn't be saying some of his best vocals were done on HCTB. To be fair with the advances in music technology it makes a lot of artists sound better than they actually are, on an album and even live.

There is no one doubting he can sing the American National Anthem now, but we are debating if he could do it as good as he did in 1994!!! With the changes in his voice it would be a lot harder, and in my opinion it's just not possible.

CarylB 18 Sep 2010 16:40

In my view Meat might feel that having nailed it so perfectly it was one of those special, not to be repeated events.

However, he is the best judge of whether or not he would sing it again in public. (I recall he said that the range it demands made it a frequent choice for his warming up at one time).

I do think he's done some of his best vocals for many years on HCTB. He says they have not been engineered on the album. I believe him. I've heard his vocals live and they were stunning. It's such an honour to sing his National Anthem that imo if he were to choose to perform it again it might be different, but he would do it full justice.

Wow!!! That's all I can say now. I've never seen that before. That was inspiring!! I was at Orlando and he sounded great. Put in my vote for him singing the national anthem again!!!! I know he can do it!!!!!

A Slice Of English 19 Sep 2010 10:34

It really says something about a performer when he can stir the hearts of people not from the US when singing that so beautifully. The hairs on my neck went up. Talk about chills! It was like the first time I heard "Running Away From Me"!! That gave me palpatations as well though lol
