Surprisingly for you Dave, this is on topic, so it can live here now :))

daveake 05 Nov 2009 16:12

Damn, broke the habit of a lifetime! I'll try not to let it happen again ... ;-)

RSG 05 Nov 2009 18:49

Is this a joke? I am confused.

daveake 05 Nov 2009 19:55

Why would it be a joke? Why are you confused? Can I think of any more questions?

RSG 05 Nov 2009 20:10

that's a awesome picture. woah

Spam Out Of Hell?

More to the point, a full-page ad in tonight's Evening Standard!

Pudding 05 Nov 2009 20:25

Although it's great exposure for something that we have no knowledge of where and when it'll happen, I'm kinda underwhelmed by the ad, it doesn't really do much for me at all.

Evil One 05 Nov 2009 20:44

I like the artwork, but the text seems a bit off.

Pudding 05 Nov 2009 20:55

Yeah the image I have no problem with, but the text gives me a sense of 'SO WHAT?"

Dave 05 Nov 2009 22:01

Well, I am my usual cynical self here and going to say what is on my mind...

Interesting timing of an advert that really tells us nothing right at the time when press releases are coming around the press about the Bat Out Of Hell Original Tour DVD.

Interesting visual so similar to the original Bat Out Of Hell artwork when I have read there was effort being made to distance Jim Steinman's "Bat Out Of Hell" musical from the Meat Loaf album of the name "Bat Out Of Hell," which contains all songs written by Jim Steinman.

I mean, I wish the show well...don't get me wrong. I think it would be a fun night out very similar to the Queen show We Will Rock You.

It should be fun!

Dave

Wasn't there a 12" Bat Out Of Hell single that had the same red graphics?

That's the Live at My Father's Place promo LP, but it doesn't have a full moon behind the bat.

AndrewG 06 Nov 2009 01:13

I do wish the musical well and hope Steinman gets some recognition if/when it is ever staged.
However I do see this as a complete and utter rehash of existing material. Is it really worth it? I've not been fussed about the Abba Musical or the Queen musical for that matter. I'm sure they are great shows, but are they as good as the originals which they are taken from? Perhaps it doesn't matter to most people.
I think there is enough original music and ideas out there to create a brand spanking new concept. For someone to spend years and years and years working on something (which is his only job I believe) to come up with something that consists out of old music and lyrics is disappointing in my opinion.
I'd rather have a few new "Blind as a Bats", "Did I say Thats" and "Testifies" around rather than 1 billion different incarnations of Bat out of hell.... sorry but that's how I feel about it...
I would have much rather have seen a Batman musical. That would have been REALLY exciting, rather than a musical that only exists because of past successes....
My two cents...

Pudding 06 Nov 2009 01:27

The difference I can see with this musical and the Abba & Queen ones is, this will have new material aswell. And I have no idea whether the songs for Bat 1+2 were written with a complete musical in mind or not at the time of writing

It should be a great show, but the ad isn't.

That would be great as long as this new music doesn't simply consist out of the "God Speed" sequence being reused within one of the Bat 1/2 songs. Lol ;-)

true, but good look to jim and i hope its a huge success
and get ready for the bat albums to re enter the charts when it
hits the stage, it will be good for everyone

carole 06 Nov 2009 03:14

It probably will be a great spectacular show, but for myself, I don't really want to see anyone else singing Meat's songs. Only he can really do them justice.

Well a musical is usually around 2 1/2 hours long, so if you combined Bat1 and Bat2 together (cos as sure as bears shit in the woods Bat3 won't be used) then he's at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes short. Plus the fact that I can't see all the songs from both albums being used. Objects is very well placed in Tanz der Vampire and would just be too goofy put in the Bat musical.

Then don't go see it. But how do you know nobody else can do them justice until you've heard someone else singing them?

I like Meat Loaf but there's some Steinman songs that he's sung that he hasn't done justice to at all. I think even Meat will be excited to hear someone else sing the Bat songs with a fresh voice and in a proper theatrical setting.

What do you regard as being a "Meat song"? One that he first sang or made famous? Anything he has recorded? One that he says was written for him?

Dave

Except they're not actually Meat's songs. They're Steinman's songs, made famous by Meat Loaf.

Look, don't spoil my fun by getting to the crux too quickly ;-)

Jesus, that sounds like a Steinman euphemism

Don't Spoil My Fun By Getting To The Crux Too Quickly (a little bit longer edit)

PanicLord 06 Nov 2009 23:37

I've never been a massive fan of the idea of the eg Rod Stewart, Queen musicals etc - I'm not even sure they should be classed as musicals - they seem more like tribute concerts to me.

Anyhow, having seen Mamma Mia, which is awesome, I think there is potential to create a genuinely enjoyable musical even if from only existing songs, given quality songwriting (check!) and quality "stringing the songs together in a plot that was probably not imagined when the songs were written" (tbc - although I imagine having their creator on board will help enormously).

Although the art is hardly original, it is utterly fitting. I mean, it is the obvious choice.

The album list is an odd idea to promote a musical - it seems to be trying to promote Jim really rather than the musical. Also, surely some of the Beatles albums would be in the top (other than 1, and I know they are co written, but they seem to be missing entirely at the moment)?

I would love to see which artist at the time would have made Steinman's work famous. Jim's work suited Meat as Meat's voice suited Steinman. I don't think they would be anywhere where they are today without each other. I look forward to seeing Bat the Musical, but I don't think Bat 1 and 2 songs can be as great as when Jim and Meat created the albums they did. :D

We will never know as we can't re-write history...BUT...I think Meat would have had more of an acting career rather than a music one, and Jim would have had more of a musicals career. I think both of them would have had success no matter what path they chose.
