Quick facebook warning.
 Apparently there's a virus about (who'd have thunk it huh?)
My brother got a video e mail sent to him by a friend of mine via facebook. As it was from a trusted source, he opened it and was hit with a virus. Apparently this thing hooks on to your facebook and sends the e mail to all the people on your friends list. In turn, your friends openthe e mail and it's sent to their friends. Be extra cautions of vid e mails EVEN if they are from a trusted source. |
OMG !!
I got this, but it warned me when I opened to look that it could be harmful !! Think that I will tell said person now . |
I dunno who sends what to who but it's a fact that certain applications in Facebook do send you viruses, phishing and all that crap. I also got video from Rosie today that she didn't send and before that a trip to the phishing site from my cousin...luckily I open all this crap at work...
The solution is not to announce everywhere do not add this one or that one as a friend...the solution is do not add applications you don't absolutely need...go through all your applications and delete what you don't absolutely need... |

same here. Was quite obvious it's a virus though, it led to a page called youtube-something.com and said page wanted to download something called flash_update~~~~~ youd have to be quite thick to go for that |
i keep away from all those videos
|
Keep away from applications...all these cute kittens and doggies and hugs is what it is...
|
keep away from facebook
|
Quote:
|
keep away from everyone...lol...
|
all jokes aside got the video from Rosie too that she didnt send...
|
Keeping away from applications isn't a joke. The do NOT belong to the Facebook. Facebook integrates them and you can allow them through the Facebook and Facebook will not allow them if you tell them they create problems. BUT...we don't know for sure which application creates problem so you can't report it. I did report one which has sent "sexy hugs" from me to every frigging person on my friends list including people I know slightly...
I have deleted a lot of applications and will not accept requests from a lot of them either...just keep applications to the bare minimum and that should do it. Facebook applications are no different from any other open source applications... |
By the way...that new look of Facebook - that was not done to make it prettier...that was partly for security reasons...according to them this new facebook interface has more security features...
|
i did not realise that Zina,i might get rid of some applications if that is the case...thanks for pointing that out
|
this particular virus most come from one of the more common applications. As it was sent to me, and I have only 2 or 3 of them on my facebook.

For those that are against facebook, I have to say that I am actually very happy in general that I joined. I now stay in touch with people I didn't before and know all their news. For me it became a priceless way of staying in touch with friends and relatives seeing how I am very anti-social and don't like the phones. Facebook is no more dangerous than anything you might be doing on the internet...read address of the site you're on...if the address does not start with "https" (please note S at the end)...then it's not a secure site and you have as many chances to download crap to your computer with any other sites... |

The same thing is happening on Bebo and possibly Myspace too. Gotta love social networking sites.

Oh dear ... see this kind of thing puts me off Facebook!
|
why do people do it,what do they actually get out of it ?
|
IDK Barb, mabe to see how many people they can hack off at one time mabe  !
|
just seems so pointless to me and just causes others grief...still i suppose they have nothing better to do,at least it has been picked up on this time and we have been warned.

Thanks for the warning, I'll keep it in mind. I'm always getting these weird requests on facebook and used to just accept them but now just ignore them, don't understand half of them.
Carole |
I've had a fair few mails off people saying random stuff like "you've been spotted in this vid" etc, and I'd been warned before about opening them.
I generally don't do the apps thing, so sorry to all of you that sent me random stuff cos I don't reply to anything other than a message, wall post or status comment to be honest. Although I've noticed that in the last few days I'm not getting any email notifications for anything anymore. I got a message from FB today saying "Unfortunately, the settings that control which email notifications get sent to you were lost. We're sorry for the inconvenience. To reset your email notification settings, go to: blah blah..." which I thought was a bit weird, and made me a little aprehensive that it was a phishing thing. To be honest, I'm sort of glad that I don't get a zillion emails saying "so and so has thrown a banana/thong/gorilla or whatever at you..." each day  |

OK just gone through ALL my applications, some of which I don't even recall accepting , but it's been minimised and I will probably decline new requests from now on so don't be disheartened if I decline.
|
See, that's the thing...I didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings by declining the requests...some I did...most I didn't...if we all agree now that we won't feel bad by no accepting requests except for games and such we all should be ok with each other...
|
I deny just about every request I get anyway lol
|
I wondered why i'd got a thing from Rosie saying i'd been caught naked in the bathroom lol!!

this virus is very clever....looks like it's replying to it's own posts via other infected people, but uses both their first names in the message so you think it's ok to open it...

Emma's post above made me think of something...she mentioned applications she doesn't remember adding. I found at least one that I KNOW I couldn't have POSSIBLY added...it piggy backed on some other application I allowed...
|
apparently the application responsible for this is "Hug Me"

I don't have that application so thanks feck for that...will look closely at home what I do have and delete most of it except for games and such...
|
You know what's odd...I dont have it either

Some simple Facebook security rules (which could actually be applied to any online site:
1) Don't use your prime email address as your facebook logon id. Many applications will or can access your profile information to be able to send you emails. Using the same email address for facebook as you use for ebay, paypal, internet banking etc is leaving the door open for ID theft and online fraud. It's easy enough to set up another hotmail address or similar for these sorts of sites, keeping your main address for the useful stuff. 2) Don't use the same password for Facebook as you do for other more important sites Same reasons as above, if something can steal or change your password, they'll start trying to log into other sites (eg paypal etc) using the stolen email address and if they're succesful they'll spend your money. 3) Don't have an obvious password. Pretty obvious really. But you'd be surprised how many people have "password" as their password. changing some letters for numbers is good ... "me4tl04f" is better than "meatloaf", but it's not as good (that is it's easier to guess) as the "consonant vowel consonant number consonant vowel consonant number" combination (eg cog3wet7) for even more obscurity remove the first number and double it (eg cogwet4mikdop9) that's virtually uncrackable, although harder to remember. 4) Change your password now and again. Yes ok, so you've got to try and remember it, but it's an added measure, certainly if you think there's something dodgy going on then change all your passwords, and never store them on your PC .. .that is never let IE or Firefox autocomplete your logins. |
What do I do if I already have login set up?
|
I'm sure you can change your email and password settings somewhere within FB ... I'll have a look tonight.

thanks for that info Andy

I think Facebook people are actually trying to fight this. I got e-mail notifications that I have those PMs from Helen and Emma Meatgrl and somebody else...but when I got to my inbox I really didn't have any of these there...not sure what it means but think it's something to do with Facebook fighting back...
|
I now got an e-mail from a certain someone telling me there is a virus on facebook and to pass it on.. Er hello I know and I think most of the population on facebook is aware of that but thanks for stating the obvious  !!
|
I just dunno where this came from opened a link from one of my contacts on Facebook someone that had sent me stuff before so had no reasn to be suspicious and Bang!! on it went so sorry guys has taken me me ages to clean up my computers and reset all my passwords.
Rosie |
Oh and I have deleted all applications, and sorry will not accept any more friend requests, nothing personal folks, seems to be Ok now I had 15 vids from contacts at one time in my inbox, it just kept going round and round..
Rosie |
NP Rosie.
Also not sure if this is part of the virus or not but I'm finding that after deleting/blocking apps they appear again when I next log on and it's really annoying some I can't block because there is an error but it's annoying keep going through and re-deleting them, this happening with anyone else  ?!? |
Rosie, it just isn't your fault - please don't feel bad and I am sure everybody understands about applications and stuff...
|
Yes did with me I cleaned my computers chaned passwords and then did a system restore seems fine now

I'm at the library with limited time right now but will see if they reappear later when I log on at home, if they have I'll make a list of them and forward them on to the fb team as problem applications, then I haven't the faintest how to clear, defragment my computer and all that crap, dad is currently abroad so can't help me so I'm stuck  !!

I didn't get all these messages, Helen, although I did get notifications in the e-mail. In fact, I didn't get any messages for a few days now and am actually wondering about that...a little unusual for me...LOL

i think i am gonna just delete all applications except for a couple like the green patch etc and not accept any others at all whatever they are just to be safe....and as far as i know game invites are ok..
|
Attention!
please check if you have an application called "zoosk" added to your facebook. It appeared on my profile, without being added, and was a bit tricky to remove.
I also know that it sent out emails unasked. |

i was sent that one ages ago but because it included people that are not on my friends lists i just deleted it there and then,i never keep any applications that have people not on my friends lists "outsiders"if you like...lol
|
It was an awful application, accepted it at first when I was new to facebook then didn't like it matching me to random dudes that I'd never heard of, let alone met so I thought I deleted it and still I got notifications of new matches and I think I've deleted it several times over since then, but hopefully this block will be the last one, please god  !!

facebook sucks plums

WTF.........lol..
|
My sentiments exactly, Barb !

I've reported Zoosk and I suggest everybody who has/had it report it too. You can report it straight from Zoosk page on Facebook.
|
As I have blocked said application it appears that I can't report it, seems odd that it asks you to add it if all you want to do is report it, what a stupid system !!!
|
You have to put Zoosk into search. When and if it comes up, click on the picture. That should bring you to their page. That's where you report it...but I don't know...I blocked them AFTER I've reported them.

you know whats strange?
I've really not been to facebook a lot in the last time, and I'm sure I didnt add anything since early summer... |
and I assure you I definately didn't add a program informing me of hot matches or whatever it was going on about. Not that I have anything against internet dating sites, but my life is complicated enough, and most of my traumas this year have been relating to the opposite sex. I already know enough males, what would I need to add more trauma to my life for?!! ;)
|
I KNOW I didn't add it either...I just bulk deleted all the e-mails that were coming disregarding them...I guess I shouldn't disregard in the future...
|
I would recommend not to add Youville or something like that application...I wanted to play this game but during the night it opened something like 10 tabs in my browser...obnoxious...
|
That one funnily hasn't attracted me !
|
Another warning for anyone on facebook,i got an email this morning, about one of my friends uploading my pics onto another site,if anyone recieves one,its yet another virus..
i have not sent any emails in case you get one from me Cheers Barb |
another warning: Kasim is on facebook now
|
thats not nice RJ...lol....is great ....lol
|
My apologies about Youville...nothing wrong with it...something is wrong with me...lol
