This is what Music Week had to say:

Monday September 29, 2008
By Ben Cardew

Q Magazine is to present its classic song award to Meatloaf for his epic track Bat Out Of Hell.

The Bauer title holds its annual awards this Monday (October 6) and Meatloaf will be there to receive his honour in person.

Q editor in chief Paul Rees says, "There are some songs that transcend such things as time and genre, and Bat Out Of Hell is assuredly one of them. It sounded extraordinary when it was first released, and it appears no less so now - like something beamed in from another planet.”

This year Q Radio will air three exclusive shows from the awards, including backstage gossip.

Diane

samurai7 29 Sep 2008 16:38

surely the award should be presented to Meat AND Jim?

(in my opinion)

LucyK! 29 Sep 2008 16:41

It would be nice for Jim to take the credit but ultimately it would always be Meat being the 'face' of the award as Jim wouldn't be at the awards to accept it :?

meatloaf-unofficial 29 Sep 2008 17:04

so I guess we'll see Meat on Tv?? :-)

MeatGrl1 29 Sep 2008 17:13

LucyK! 06 Oct 2008 10:59

I wondered why Andy was working in London today! :p

Diane 06 Oct 2008 14:47

Just read this on the BBC news website:

"Meat Loaf turned up at the ceremony sporting a cut eye and looking unwell, telling reporters he would have to visit a doctor because he was suffering from vertigo."

:( Hope it doesn't completely ruin his big day.

Diane

The Flying Mouse 06 Oct 2008 15:01

 This is probably just one of those things I completely miss the point of, but can you not only get Vertigo (fear of heights? Right?) in high places? :wtf:

Doesn't sound too good about the cut eye though.
Hope the big guy is OK.

LucyK! 06 Oct 2008 15:03

Yes the vertigo thing confused me too, perhaps he was suffering from it and is now recovering?

Either way I hope he's still able to enjoy receiving his award

That doesn't sound good, get well soon Mr Loaf

This is from the News page on the Q site which is being updated through the day:

Steinman says Bat reflects his philosophy
Bat Out Of Hell‘s writer Jim Steinman said today that the song was “a perfect reflection of my creed”.

The legendary composer – who wrote the song for the album of the same name – said he created the track to be “the ultimate crash song”, “operatic annihilation” and a little piece of "Wagner".

After hearing the track was named Classic Song at today’s Q Awards, he said: “In the interest of being pompous, profound, and pretentious all at the same time, as well as being self-deprecating, even self-lacerating, and brilliant simultaneously, I can truly say that BAT OUT OF HELL is a perfect reflection of my creed: ‘If you don’t go over the top, you’ll never see what’s on the other side”.

“’Bat’ was a complete song after two choruses, at six-plus minutes long. But I thought it was too short - no, incomplete. It needed more! So I toiled away and came up with the final third of the song, starting at: “I can see myself, tearing up the road, FASTER, than any other boy has ever gone……” - and this evolved into the whole CRASH sequence, ending with “the last thing I see is my heart/still beating/still beating/breaking out of my body and flying away ……. Like a BAT OUT OF HELL!”

“Then it was complete. It had been a great driving-racing-speed anthem, plus a suitably obsessive love story, but now it was what I wanted all along: THE ULTIMATE CRASH SONG!! SELF-DESTRUCTION! OPERATIC ANNIHILATION!!!!!!
A LOVE DEATH!!!!! LITTLE RICHARD WAGNER!!!!

“Thus, if I hadn't gone OVER THE TOP, I NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN WHAT’S ON THE OTHER SIDE. Which I really loved. And which, to this f***ing day, I still love. END OF STORY; AND THANK YOU, Q & MEAT. (That sounds like a distant relative of Spotted Dick: Q & MEAT!)”

Latest Meat update on the Q news page:

Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell landed the title of Classic Song today at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The huge worldwide hit – written by his early collaborator Jim Steinman – was recognised by Q magazine for its incredible staying power.

Collecting the prize, Loaf exchanged banter with award presenter Al Murray, asking him to repeat a breakneck, off the cuff introduction prior to taking the stage. But after Murray was unable to remember what he had said, Loaf asked: “Could you say something else?”

“I like your hair,” quipped the comic. “I like your hair too, Loaf responded.

Murray shot back: “We’ve got a future you and me.” After Loaf’s failed attempt to sing some Queen songs at Murray’s suggestion, the comic concluded Shall we go to the pub and do that?”

Diane

Diane 06 Oct 2008 15:50

Latest update from BBC news website:

"He (Meat) left the ceremony soon after picking up his award from comedian Al Murray."

I'm feeling really sorry for him. Hope he's feeling better soon.

Diane

LucyK! 06 Oct 2008 15:54

Oh dear, is he straight back to LA after this?

Diane 06 Oct 2008 16:01

No idea Lucy but he must be crushed to have travelled to the UK for the award only to be taken ill.

Diane

LucyK! 06 Oct 2008 16:02

He needs to get himself home and rested and make sure he's on top form for the upcoming shows...

meatloaf-unofficial 06 Oct 2008 17:43

well listening to the online Radio the presenter said:

That he was really please Meat Loaf got the award for best classic song because Bat was the first record his mother bought him - then he went onto say, I think my street cred has gone down  Why??

MEAT LOAF ROCKS!!!!!!! :-P

I hope he feels better soon and new style there - sporting some glasses

meatloaf-unofficial 06 Oct 2008 17:50

Adding on from the Official Q Awards site:

"The singer appeared hesitant and not quite at his usual voluble top form as he took to the stage.

His publicist said later that the singer was suffering from vertigo and was shaken by an eye injury on the way to the awards event".

Doesn't sound good....

Also on that page is a small clip of him talking to a presenter - literally 5 seconds...

allrevvedup 06 Oct 2008 20:53

saw the clip, maybe it was just the sunglasses that changed his look but he didn't look well.

Sarge 06 Oct 2008 20:57

I saw pics prior to any reports and thought that he looked quite elegant but I was wondering about the glasses and if he wore them to conceal something. After reading this thread I know why. What a pity that he felt unwell. I hope he gets better soon.

AndyK 06 Oct 2008 21:06

The way I read the reports it comes across to me that Meat cut his eye not long before the awards ceremony, so it's possible that he was shaken after whatever the "accident" was which could be why he isn't looking his best in the pics perhaps?

LP 07 Oct 2008 01:29

Just heard the audio from Meat's acceptance speech and he was definitely under the influence of something; be it prescribed or otherwise there is no doubting it. He sounded slow, confused, and displayed none of the usual sharp-witted banter we've come to love. I hope he sorts himself out.

I wouldn't post this if I didn't believe it myself so take a listen to Q Radio online at this link http://radioplayer.qthemusic.com/ and then choose the highlights show on the right hand side.

His bit appears around 10 minutes into the show.

honeyrose 07 Oct 2008 02:03

Well to be honest I rather hope his performance on Q was just the result of too many substances, only if not it sounds rather like PSP which Dudley Moore had.

("In 1987, Dudley Moore enlisted music critic Renata Fruchter as an artistic partner and they performed as a duo in the U.S. and Australia. However, his disease soon started to make itself apparent as his fingers would not always do what he wanted them to do. Symptoms such as slurred speech and loss of balance were interpreted by the public and the media as a sign of drunkenness. Dudley Moore himself was at a loss to explain this.

On 30 September 1999, Moore announced that he was suffering from the terminal degenerative brain disorder Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. wikipedia).

PSP symptoms include loss of balance, slurred speech and vision focus problems. In particular moving the eyes, particularly in the vertical direction. The latter accounts for some of the falls experienced by these patients as they are unable to look up or down.

The Flying Mouse 07 Oct 2008 02:03

 Thanks for the link

Doesn't sound too good
Quite a bit of sluring going on, but he HAD complained of vertigo.

Sounds like Meat has taken a nasty tumble shortly before the show and has not been feeling right since.
Hopefully he'll be well recovered soon.

Must say that the highlights show doesn't seem to be very coherent at all.
It seems like they've quite literally took a few comments from his speech, edited them together, and threw it on the show.
For instance, we've heard it reported Al told Meat he liked his hair, and Meat replied in kind. That is missing from this recording.
I don't think it's a totally accurate representation of Meat's speech.

Although he clearly wasn't his old self, I think the edit made him seem much worse.

duke knooby 07 Oct 2008 02:05

he was briefly shown and mentioned on ch5 news coverage about 7.20pm, but they just said looking the worse fo wear

sorry but listening to the audio it was really hard to listen to..... god, imo, I think its really good that we didn't see Meat on video accepting the awards - I think its too sad a time....

You so gotta get better ;-)

PS>> Look on the rbight side, HE attended it no matter what, so thats what counts. At least he didn't stay in his hotel room (if you get what I mean)

Also after reading the articles, why do poeple always assume he drinks and appear drunk! I think he's genuinly ill and not drunk!!! Makes me mad - they can't seem to take his word!!!!!

 Some people really have no f***ing brains
The people in that crowd were bang out of order.

Meat looked bloody awful and nearly took a header as soon as he got out of the van, and the crowd just ignored that and shouted for autographs (that will probably end up on e bay anyway).

What if he'd been run over by a car?
Would it be cool to run to his side brandishing a copy of Bat Out Of Hell and a black marker pen?

Sorry, but if you see someone who is obviously ill, no matter who it is, you show them a little respect and leave them alone.

meatloaf-unofficial 07 Oct 2008 11:31

Meat was apparently rushed to hospital after a vertigo attack (not sure what one of those is) last night and another article saud, he was still in there...

Hope he's free now

sexyeyes_jo 07 Oct 2008 12:32

thats disgraceful what they done to meat, he could hardly stand up and yet they kept bothering him for bloody autographs obviously the man ain't well and surely if someone ain't well they would want to be left alone and to get on with it no matter who they are, if they had any respect for meat they would have left him alone, don't people have any common sense left any more? or is it they're to think to see that he is ill. at least he made the effort to go to the awards in first place he could of just pulled out of it, im sure there will be plenty of other times to get autographs from meat its not like he ain't gonna come to london again.

Skeleton 07 Oct 2008 13:07

I have a really slight epilepsy. I don't have those major seizures and I don't need any medication so don't worry about me. :D

I feel dizzy at times (maybe 2 times a month, slight seizure) but couple years ago I had a really huge vertigo attack and I had to lay down.. It was horrible.. :( I couldn't move without feeling that I'm going to stumble and I felt a little bit sick.. And the most horrible thing is that it lasted for hours.. :( It sort of paralyzed me..

I hope that Meat gets well soon.. :cheer: He's wonderful man and really deserved the Q-award.. :D

poor meat. i couldn't listen to that audio clip, he sounded so ill. he's so brave, my moms have vertigo and she couldn't get out of bed for three days and any movement left her being violently sick. vertigo is to do with the balence in the inner ear and this can get disturbed by a fall or a blow to the head ect, it leaves the person feeling and being violenty sick, unstable on their feet and unable to balence, movement cause the world to spin. it takes ages to get over and some people have it for life, in varying degrees. i hope you get better meat, x

Meat Loaf 'seeks treatment' after awards

LucyK! 07 Oct 2008 18:43

As yet I've not opened the links in this thread, and frankly after the past year I don't want to, I just hope that whatever problems he's suffered prior to the awards caused him to need painkillers or otherwise that have had an effect, and once he's off them he'll be back to normal...this press coverage is the last thing he needs following the Casa De Carne reviews

I don't think this is fair to point. Don't get me wrong I understand in a way where you are coming from.

HOWEVER: In the past when Meat has been described as being drunk it has always been based on his performances (that mixed in with his Dead Ringer antics obviously is a crazy assumption!).
Now though, based on the footage of him almost stumbling out of the car, the photos and apparently what went on on stage (which you can't see) I think it's fair to point out he did seem AT LEAST drunk. That or heavily intoxicated on medicenes/painkillers / jetlag problems whatever. Which all seem quite plausible to me.
I actually hope that's all it ways.

RadioMaster 07 Oct 2008 18:56

because its not part of his image

geordieloaf 07 Oct 2008 19:10

To be honest although it wasn't very good to see him look like this let's not blow it out of proportion. Yes he seemed unwell, he said he had a bad bout of vertigo and appartently hurt his eye so yes i'm guessing he would have took something to try to get through the awards.
Even if that meant having a large drink so what? He was unwell his speach wasn't great again so what, i have heard alot worse from other celebs. Listen to the interview on the red carpet he sates he is feeling unwell and go's on to describe the vertigo problem. I thought he sounded ok on the red carpet and although obviously he was unwell, he then went on to say the highlight of his career is still infront of him.
I hope he recovers well but let's not get to down and jumping to conclusions and making something seem alot worse that it probably is!

LucyK! 07 Oct 2008 19:29

Absolutely Chris, not forgetting that on top of the vertigo, bad eye and appropriate painkillers Meat was probably also jet lagged

RadioMaster 07 Oct 2008 19:30

to be honest, I dont think the pics and videos look as bad as everyone says. He's clearly not well, but I've seen him in much worse condition.

Heg19 07 Oct 2008 20:11

Hope he gets better soon whatever the illness is. We love you Meat xxx

LP 07 Oct 2008 20:15

Yeah, take a look at the Wembley '81/'82ish video!

I think being a more mature gentleman in that kind of state makes things appear worse. He's a rock star after all, he's allowed a drink or 2! It annoys me that his publicist always insists that he doesn't drink when we all know that he does. Who cares if he does?

To contradict myself a little - I think it was either very brave or very silly to venture out in front of the world's press in that state.

That's true and people forget he has trouble with his knee which makes him a bit unsteady at the best of times.
Plus we all know Meat given the chance can talk crap better than most i really don't think it is as bad as some people are making out!

I think being a more mature gentleman in that kind of state makes things appear worse. He's a rock star after all, he's allowed a drink or 2! It annoys me that his publicist always insists that he doesn't drink when we all know that he does. Who cares if he does?

To contradict myself a little - I think it was either very brave or very silly to venture out in front of the world's press in that state.

who was it that said any publicity is good publicity?

samurai7 07 Oct 2008 20:36

well, he IS in all the papers today ;)

and I've had loads of people call me up to tell me just that...

allrevvedup 07 Oct 2008 20:44

He didn't look well and if he had an eye injury, of course that is going to affect his vision and balance and depending if he was on medication it would also affect him.

Overall he looked like an old man and, as something that will not be a news flash, hey he is 61 years old...there's been crazier things that have happened at award cermonies, Michael Jackson and Jarvis Cocker spring to mind.

Just have to add as well the important thing is that a great album was rightly recognised today

Rosiec211 07 Oct 2008 20:46

I just wanna say Congratulations on the award Meat, and hope you are feeling lots lots better soon. Rosie xxx

Exactly!

I was talking to someone at work today and he mentioned his wife was suffering with vertigo ... and the symptoms sound just like the descriptions of Meat at the awards ... apparently it's fairly easily controlled though. So fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for Meat!

Just hope that his illness doesn't overdshadow the award!

Well, I for one don't know whether he drinks or not...neither do I care...so please don't include me in the mix...

RadioMaster 07 Oct 2008 21:51

what mix? Zina on the rocks or Zina on the beach?? :))

AndrewG 07 Oct 2008 22:12

LMAO.

Honestly the sex on the beach drink was something I hadn't heard about a while ago and this led to an interesting situation with a girl from work. :D.
A LOT of rumours were spread that day!!

Yep that is vertigo, i have suffered from it in the past, it is not pleasant and the symptoms displayed by Meat are akin to vertigo. Assumptions can be made, only Meat knows the real answer.
I think we could go round and round saying well is it this, is it that? but really all i care about is that Meat gets better soon, from whatever problem he has.

Yea he did have bad press for the last tour, but i loved every show, so i don't give a rats ass what the press say about the shows, and am taking what they say now with a pinch of salt.
I listen to other peoples opinion on the show, they are entitled to their view i respect that, but it doesn't change mine.
I have my opinion of what is wrong with Meat and i respect that people may think differently.
