thats easy:
Right click on "my computer" and open the last entry (should be something like "attributes", dont know the exact term of the english windows)
A lot of pc info should show up, one of them is the speed.
(I assume youre running windows?)

duke knooby 20 Oct 2007 19:04

(for windows, click start, control panel, system, general will give speed also) like he said

 Haven't seen Uncle Chris or Uncle Rob about recently, but this is still the place for tech probs so here goes.........

When I type something on the net (on a forum, e bay, or even in a search engine) the page automatically refreshes, making it impossible to write anything.

The only way i'm able to post anything is to type this out on word pad (which is showing no ill effects) and then copying and pasting it onto the internet page I want it on.

Anyone have any idea what's up?

Hypnobabe 06 May 2009 19:56

Nope, but I have a problem of my own... When I sign into MSN or AIM, and I get a notification that I have e-mail, I used to be able to click on it and IE would open up and take me to the inbox - it's not doing it anymore. What do I need to do to enable those links again? Ta muchly!

mszee 06 May 2009 19:58

I am not Rob or Chris, but did you check your computer for malware? Just in case? A lot of that is going around...download this:

http://www.superantispyware.com/supe...freevspro.html

install and run. This is free and recommended by techies here...beyond that...

Sounds like you have something nasty in your computer. Do you have a 'restore point' on your computer to just before problems occured? I have automatic restore points created and whenever something like that happens to me then I just hit the button and problem solved.

Have recently upgraded your Windows? if so you might need to change your settings again.

Hypnobabe 22 Jun 2009 19:52

Okay.... I suspect this might be a virus-y type problem, any assistance gratefully accepted...

My daughter's laptop was working fine yesterday, today, the keyboard won't work. We managed to sign in by opening the onscreen keyboard, but can't type anything on the keyboard, and when she's tried to sign into Facebook by going to the browser history bar to select the right URL, it won't allow her to click on it, either by using the mouse, or by using the cursor key to select (because the keyboard isn't working!)

I thought maybe trying a restore point would be a good idea, but I've got the same problem trying to open the backup and restore centre - it won't allow me to highlight anything and keeps closing the program list as soon as I move the cursor from where it says program list.

Her virus protection's run out, so it's probably riddled with all sorts, and I don't even know where to start sorting this out... can anyone help? Please?

AndyK 22 Jun 2009 20:43

Not much help I know, but ...

Have you tried plugging a USB keyboard and/or mouse in? If you get the same problems with the external devices obviously that won't help much, but if they work then you can start looking at fixing it either via a restore point or by reinstalling drivers and antivirus gumpf or even a full Windows reinstall.

It's either a virus or it's the laptop hardware that's knackered.

Hypnobabe 22 Jun 2009 20:45

Thanks Andy, didn't think to try that.... I'll give it a go!

Hypnobabe 22 Jun 2009 21:19

Thanks Andy, you are a genius.....

The external devices both work, the keyboard and the mouse, and there doesn't seem to be any problem with the websites we couldn't access before. Does that mean we need to check drivers now, or can we assume the hardware's knackered? What would you recommend as a next step?

daveake 22 Jun 2009 21:46

Restart the laptop. When it starts it will/should display, briefly, something like "Press DEL to enter setup". It might say F10 instead of DEL, or possibly something else. When that appears hammer on the DEL (or whatever it says) key on the laptop keyboard. If it goes into the setup screen (usually a blue screen with text menus) then the keyboard is working, and the problem is in Windoze. If it doesn't then either you weren't quick enough hammering on the keyboard (switch off then on then try again), or the keyboard is broke.

Assuming the DEL thing worked, switch the laptop off for a few seconds, unplug any USB keyboard then turn on again and let it start normally this time. Using a mouse click on the Windows START button then choose Control Panel. When that opens double-click on the System icon, then when that opens click on the Hardware tab and then the "Device Manager" button. This will give you a list of the hardware in your laptop or connected to it. Halfway down the list is "Keyboards" with a "+" sign to the left. Click on the + and it will show what keyboard(s) you have connected. If there's nothing there then Windows hasn't seen your keyboard. If there is one then make sure it's not disabled (right-click on it then choose "Enable" from the popup menu). I doubt it is this (on my laptop it's not even possible to disable the keyboard) but it's worth checking.

Dave

Hypnobabe 22 Jun 2009 21:49

thanks Dave, I'll give that a go tomorrow, since I've gone and locked the USB keyboard back in the office.... Will update/ask for more help after I've tried it!!!

daveake 22 Jun 2009 21:50

You don't need the USB keyboard to try it!

Hypnobabe 22 Jun 2009 21:57

D'Oh!! See What are you eating thread for explanation of unexpected blondeness..... lol.....

RadioMaster 25 Jun 2009 21:14

HEEEEELP!

:panic:

for about ten minutes now, ive got a horizontal whitle line right in the middle of my laptop display. it goes across the whole thing. It's exactly one pixel wide. It's not directly white, but it seems to be always a few shades lighter then the rest of the screen (black->grey, grey->white)

I had a similar problem a few years ago, but then the line was -vertical, -darker not lighter and -about 5cm wide.

Back then I had to send it it to get repaired. Please tell me it's a software thing this time!!

It's a software thing.

Oh, did you want a truthful answer?

If it goes completely across the screen, and remains even if you move windows around, then it's hardware (probably the connections to the LCD panel).

Dave

AndyK 25 Jun 2009 21:45

Dave's right. It IS a software problem. Had this happen to me a few years ago with my work laptop.

It's easily fixed by getting the hardware that the software runs on repaired.

HTH :))

RadioMaster 25 Jun 2009 21:48

damn, was afraid of that....:wall:

if there anything i can do myself? or anyone who's more into hardware than me? really dont fancy sending it in.....the price is ridiculous, and also id have to find a way to live (/work) without it for several weeks.

luckily i bought myself a netbook a few weeks ago, so I'll at least have something to work with...

AndyK 25 Jun 2009 21:50

Do you not have a repair shop locally that you can leave it with for a day or two rather than sending it away?

RadioMaster 25 Jun 2009 21:52

:? I was thinking of warranty, but that must have run out a few months ago anyway...
Last time I brought it to the shop, and they were sending it in and it took more than a month till it was back (+90€ i might add)

I have to remember that sentence. I will tell it to the next user lamenting about that problem.

What laptop model do you have?

RadioMaster 25 Jun 2009 22:14

acer aspire 3000

might have something to do with the fact that (other than usual) i was carrying it around the whole town in my backpack all day yesterday....but a laptop should be able to take that, shouldnt it?

But maybe bringing it to a story might be not so a bad idea as the battery, the touchpad, the cd rom drive and the fan are ~~~~ed as well...

AndyK 25 Jun 2009 22:16

Really depends what else was in the backpack and if it was protected from it?

RadioMaster 25 Jun 2009 22:17

basically nothing that could really harm it
