From The Stage at http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/newsstory.php/14804/west-end-shows-dominate-royal-variety-line-up

West End shows dominate Royal Variety line-up

Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Take That will appear alongside stars from West End shows Spamalot, The Sound of Music, Avenue Q and Wicked, at this year’s Royal Variety Performance.

The annual show, in aide of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund and now in its 78th incarnation, takes place at the London Coliseum on December 4 in the presence of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Rocker Meatloaf will be making his Royal Variety debut singing songs from his new album and a classic duet with a surprise guest. Pop stars the Sugababes, the Puppini Sisters and James Morrison will also feature.

At the event BBC winner Connie Fisher and the Von Trapp children will perform a medley from The Sound of Music, while Doctor Who and Torchwood’s John Barrowman will put on a forties-style performance.

Comedians Ken Dodd, Omid Djalili and Jason Byrne will appear at the event, while other guests include Katie Price and Peter Andre, Paul O’Grady, Vernon Kay, Noel Edmonds and Patrick Swayze.

Does this mean he will be singing more than one song ??? I hope so - The Monster Is Loose should be done along with Blind As A Bat and oviously It's All Coming Back To Me Now will be done !!!!

This will be so fun to watch - special guest is Meat ??

Maybe a Tim Curry and Meat Loaf Rocky duet reunion

This would be fantastic but Tim Curry doesn't have anything to do with Rocky now he's sick to death of it and understandable if you read the interviews since that movie, every one brings up the fishnets etc and it got to the point where he no longer want's anything to do with it, the last thing he did was The 15th Anniversary Rocky Convention which is on the DVD and I love it.

"How'd You do I! It's so nice to know
that there are people out there, sicker
than I am!"

:lmao:, that quote is brilliant. And Judy I agree it would be absolutely awesome to see Meat and Tim together again but this isn't going to happen in the forseeable future sadly.

What's true is
Meat is appearimg in the Royal Variety Show this year .. which is marvellous, and exciting :)
It will be televised as always after the event .. so we'll all be able to see it, either at the time or through later seeing what someone has captured from the TV :)

What may well be probable is that, like most performers on the RVS, he won't want to say before the show exactly what he's going to do on the night!

 To be billed as a suprise special guest, it has to be someone well known.

Patti?
Jimmy?
Marion?

Hardly household names (even though well known in our own circles)

So who?

Fisrt person to cross my mind is Cher.

It's a duet, and Cher is the only famous person Meat has done a well known duet with.

But I don't know if Cher would be up for it.

It would be one HELL of a hot ticket to see them together after all these years 8)

Bonnie?

Could be.

She's always been linked to Meat for some stranger reason, even though the only thing they have in common is one hell of a song writter.

They never appeared on a song together before (or since) she did a few guest backing vocals on A kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste.

There is a third option.

See if you can take a guess from these clues..........

A person Meat HAS dueted with.

They are English.

They have something to flog right now................

Not sure what you mean by "one appearance". It's a long show and they normally screen it on TV just the once.

As to lip synching .. what an odd question .. when considering Meat as a stage performer. He was about the only person who DID sing live when he appeared in the Party in the Park show for the Prince's Trust a few years ago .. (which was commented on in the press reviews) .. always sings live at concerts .. This is a major live show where all performances are live, and which most artists consider an honour to be invited to appear in .. Of course he will! :) He doesn't like lip-synching and only does this when live performing is less than practical.

When Meat appears on stage he sings his ass off .. and I have no doubt he'll be singing his ass off at the RVS!!

02 Dec 2006, 10:41
are the artists on that show usually playing live or playback?

CarylB
02 Dec 2006, 11:05
I guess it depends on what they do .. comedians are normally live .. so are sketches with cameo performances from Soap stars, magicians, and acrobats:) .. and I've never seen a fire-eater lyp-synching .. lol

Musically, usually they have one or two acts which feature a group of artists from a current musical, who generally sing live using the orchestra at the RVS .. the remaining singers I think vary depending on whether they need their own backing band or not .. just as Meat is singing one song live but having to lipsynch the one which he knows demands his own band rather than the orchestra provided.

As I've only seen the RVS on TV, and there are so many acts following each other it's frankly hard to tell sometimes. I'm pretty sure the Beatles sang live, but that was many years ago, and of course each of them was considered a star in their own right. Shirley Bassey sang live .. but her songs are different and can be sung with the orchestra provided relatively easily .. just as Meat says Dead Ringer is one that doesn't need the NE to do it justice. Larry Hagman sang live .. know that because he dried completely and his mother had to come on and help him out!!

I can understand Meat's frustration and disappointment, but there are so many acts having to be managed through a very tight show (plus they all have to share dressing rooms). Traditionally most performers only had one very short segment .. 4 minutes or so (except for the main compere and the headliner) and if you blinked you'd miss them! Recently they've tended to give more time .. and at least we'll get to see Meat perform two songs :)

And he still carries the honour of being one of the few artists to perform live at the Prince's Party in the Park a few years back .. and then the sound equipment let him down.

Prince Charles clearly likes Meat .. he was I think the only artist invited to sit with the Prince in the audience at the Party in the Park. I'm sure the Prince will love seeing him in the RVS even if he only sings Dead Ringer live :) .. as will I of course :)

Meat has already told us that none of the band are allowed to play at the RVP. Look here (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=291302&postcount=1). I'm sure the band members are just as upset about it as Meat and ourselves but it was very good of Meat to take the trouble to let us know.

I've just got back from RVP and it was an entertaining evening but very long! The show lasted over 3 and a half hours.

Meat Loaf was on in the first half (although they could change the order for when it's televised next week). I thought his voice sounded very strong during DeadRinger (although I think Jamelia missed a couple of lines!).

There was a nice touch when Meat Loaf went towards the back of the stage to sing DeadRinger, as Kasim gave him a reassuring pat on the back as if to say that he was performing well!

There's a strict budget with RVP and after they get the artists they want or need they start trimming away, That's why you end up with Ken Dodd and not somebody who's any good. That's probably why the band wasn't allowed to play, plus they need to take down one set or performance and quickly put up another one.

Meat Loaf's part of the show was set in a bar and the introduction was that it was a bar that had seen better days so a band would not really have fit into that sort of scene. They had dancers during DeadRinger, plus there was the problem of not being able to play live.

I think all artists donate their time for free for this show as it is an event to raise money for the Artists Benevolent Fund.

Yes - he certainly did perform BAAB:D

I attended the RVP & had a truly enjoyable time with Deb, Lou & Caryl. Meat was on towards the end of the 1st half of the show. As has already been said the stage was set up in the style of the 'dead-ringer' video. Meat performed BAAB first followed by DR with Jamelia. I thought that the pairing of Jamelia & Meat was great & they both got into character. Whilst singing Meat was prowling around the stage & got up on top of the 'bar' etc, which was fun as some of the other performers just stood relatively still by their microphones at the front of the stage.

It was a wonderful experience to see Meat finally performing at the RVP after all these years:D

I also enjoyed Rod Stewart & Take That were ok:O But some acts, such as Ken Dodd, were IMO awful!

Unfortunately, I didn't get near Meat, but Lou was able to get an autograph when he was leaving the Coliseum.

I'm so pleased that Meat was able to perform at the RVP - it was great promotion:cool: & I'm sure that Prince Charlie really enjoyed Meat's contribution to the show:D

It was wonderful to be there, all of us posh-frocked to the nines to see the man Jonathon Ross introduced as one of the greatest rock legends perform. A lovely special end to BAAB and Meat sang his ass off in Dead Ringer to reach every nook and cranny of the Coliseum! I saw that man in the pink jacket at the fruit machine .. and wondered if it was Kasim :) .. From my elevated position in one of the highest crannies it was difficult to tell :)

Lovely evening we shared .. and yes, Meat was great up on the bar dancing :))

It was a good show all round .. but the highlight for us was obviously the man himself. And a number of people I spoke to during the interval and after the show said how much they'd liked the new song they hadn't heard before .. I'm sure they always include all the main acts in the TV show .. and yes Heather, I too hope that it proves a really strong promotional opportunity for Meat.

All in all a truly memorable evening. Very special and an honour to be there and tuck it away in my memories.

I'm confused, I thought according to someone on an earlier post, Jonathan Ross introduced Meat but in fact it was Jordan who after singing totally off key did the introduction. I thought BAAB was great but DR was NOT his best imho, not helped by Jamelia (I think thats her name, never heard her before) forgetting the words and sometimes not in tune. To me it sounded very under rehearsed as did a lot of the acts, not surprisingly as the rehearsal time is very limited for this show. Glad I've got my memories of the RAH, roll on Wembley! Ken Dodd is so awful (used to like him) I'm for my bed will no doubt read the slating you lot will give me in the morning!!

He was great. i have heard on here that his performance was too long etc etc. only thing i can say is the man is used to performing for up to 5 hrs and is trying to fit the best bits of a full show into whats ment to be 15 mins. hard to do, but i think he did really well considering he's 79.

And BAAB was really awesome, shame Meat didn't get to sing it live but, the ending was nicely done. And the new louder music to it worked really well.

At the show, at one point (which may not have been shown last night) Jonathan Ross as compere, announced upcoming acts that included Meat Loaf (with the legend quote). It was Jordan and Peter on the night who actually introduced him.

Re Ken Dodd, I actually sat through one of his live shows about ten years ago, and it was brilliant, but I think compared to that last night was disappointing partly because now he is probably (hate to say it, with luck we will all get there one day!) just too old. There comes a time when all entertainers have to call it a day and leave their audience with the good memories. A sad fact of life!

Have to admit I was really looking forward to seeing Tim Curry in Spamalot but I thought it was pretty unfunny. The RAH clips i've seen sound meh.

Kev,

If you're limiting your opinion to some dodgy clips you've seen on YouTube, which seems to be the implication from what I read. Then I do think you're perhaps a little off the mark.

Of course Meats voice has changed since the Bat I days, and in fact it's changed every tour ever since - that age think affects us all in one way or another. Show me another artist who's voice hasn't changed over the years? (Jagger, Springsteen, Bono, even Robbie Williams fpr example!).

I saw Meat at Mannheim, RAH, NYC and Toronto, and live in person he sounded a million times better tahn he does on any of those YouTube clips recorded on camera's with minute microphones which don't have the raneg to decently record a live concert.

At many of the shows I saw in the autumn I was lucky enough to be close enough to able to hear Meat sing straight from his mouth without the aid of amplification ... through many of the songs that many people have slated the clips of ... take it from me that he can still cut it! Anyway this isn't the thread for that discussion really is it?

To see Meat on something that is regarded by the establishment as one of the highlights of the TV entertainment year was a treat indeed, and as you say worth waiting through the crap for! The RVP has regularly attracted a large viewing audience, and I'd imagine last night was no different, so in terms of exposure alone it's good news!

Kev
13 Dec 2006, 15:50
My opinion isn't based on the RAH clips, I simply said they were 'meh' and that will be for the reasons you mentioned.

I've only seen meat live twice and enjoyed both times so much its untrue. It doesn't matter if his voice wasn't that good (Both shows got slated in record collector), just being there made up for it. And you know if it's a lil off, its not cos Meat can't be arsed and we know he give it his all every show.

I was simply saying that in my opinion I don't think Meat has it live anymore and we seem to be forever making excuses. Both radio 2 sessions (03 & 06), the lottery (03), Party In The Park (03), American Idol (06) and others which don't spring to mind. They were all very average - shockingly poor.

Go back to 98 when Meat was pushing VBO/Storytellers and his voice was fantastic. I know thats 8 years ago now and time takes it's toll, etc. and its understandable, the man is almost 60 and still trying his best to belt out songs which most people half his age wouldn't be able to do.

As I was discussing the events of last night, I think it is on topic and relevent to this discussion. What wouldn't be is if the Army jump in with their 'Meat was great', 'Best he's ever done', 'CHSIB' etc etc

I enjoyed it, I already said that. I like the fact he mimed (you could see he was actually singing his arse off, even if the mic wasn't on at that point) too, because I could have seen people being put off if meat did it live and it wasn't too good. Also, of course it was exposure and they put Meat over big time (even if Peter and Jordan were shite at introducing him).

AndrewG
13 Dec 2006, 16:06

If, as you say, Meat can't do it live I really can't understand why you'd want to see him live, guess we've got some negative reviews to look forward to come next May then (you already got them written?). I've been seeing Meat live since '84, his voice has changed without a doubt and I for one think it's better, I've just received a cd of Meat live in '78 and it's not a patch on his singing at the RAH (I was there and not watching some dodgy clips - it was an amazing concert in everyway including his voice, Objects was incredible).

"Until the mike was turned on"?? That's just an insult - a cheap shot that is becoming all to common around here. You want me to take you seriously, try constructive instead of destructive.

 "Until the mike was turned on"?? That's just an insult - a cheap shot that is becoming all to common around here. You want me to take you seriously, try constructive instead of destructive.

I fail to see how it was an insult. Meat's performance was different after the mic came on and you could clearly tell the difference. If I'd have said 'Until the mic came on, and then he was shit' then I'd agree with you.

There is no such thing as being constructive here.

Why go and see Meat? Cos like I said, even if it isn't the best singing in the world it's still Meat Loaf live! Its not just a guy singing, its a whole show. You're still going to go home thinking, ****ing hell, I just saw Meat Loaf.

And who knows, this might very well be the last time, so why would I not want to go.

You're right about his voice, in the 70's - 80's his voice was raw. 90's it was pretty much perfect. Now, I dunno, its down to your own views. I'm poss wanting to hear Meat as he was, but thats just me. I don't think anyone can knock his vocals on the album though, maybe his best apart from Bat 2. A lil off topic though.

Lets not turn this into a 'someone disagrees with us so we'lll post and moan about that'. Its now a topic of peoples thoughts of last night I believe?

"Until the mike was turned on"?? That's just an insult - a cheap shot that is becoming all to common around here. You want me to take you seriously, try constructive instead of destructive.

Having watched Meat's performance last night I thought it was good overall. For 99% of Blind As A Bat you couldn't tell that he was miming it, basically cause he wasn't he was singing with the mic off and then there were a few bum notes when they switched the mic on...he finished the song a different way, tried something new maybe, and it didn't come off as well as the rest of the song did.

Dead Ringer for Love was decent, my brother said during it that it was the best he's heard Meat sing live in a few years...

Monstro what's wrong with ICwuke's statement? If he didn't like the live part of the performance so what? It's not an insult to say that. Is it an insult to a chef if you don't like the meal he's cooked? no. If you went into that same chef's kitchen, gave him a torrent of abuse and called him all the names under the sun then yes that is an insult and uncalled for cause you're attacking his character not his ability as a chef.

ICwuke didn't like Meat's live vocals at the end of the song...fair enough...i didn't think the live vocals were that hot either, but the overall image was good and that is Meat Loaf. He's not the best singer in the world (i don't know who is) but he's a damn fine performer and that i think is what ICwuke is trying to say.

'guess we've got some negative reviews to look forward to come next May then (you already got them written?). '

That sounds more like a cheap shot to me or have you already got your reviews for next may written where everything in the show was perfect?

If i want to hear pitch perfect vocals, which i don't, i'll go listen to a boy or girlband with no soul and hardly any emotion. If i want to see and hear a performer putting everything into his performance then I'll go see the likes of Meat Loaf.

At the same time i've seen the good and bad in terms of his vocals. He's human, he's not perfect...like some of you seem to think he is.

I am very reassured that I am not the only one on this site that feels exactly the same way as Kev. I also am looking forward to seeing Meat in May because he, and the band, and the backing singers put on a fantastic show. If I want to hear a great voice I listen to his cds. I felt last night that DR did him no favours as did (sorry to harp back on it) the Ken Bruce farce. Live with HIS band, an audience joining in enthusiastically yes, no leaping about audience, non of his own musicians about him then imho it is a huge nono. All day I have had people that watched him last night make anti remarks
that they cant understand why I enthuse about him and I dont think he deserves that. No doubt there are some on this site that will think I have committed a grave offence by writing this but I feel a true fan should deal in constructive criticism and I do not believe anything I or Kev have written is insulting to Meat and I trust in the highly unlikely event of him reading this he would not take it as such, because it certainly isnt intended to be.

Poor man. Of all the people that could have introduced him, it fell to Peter and Katie!
Still, was nice to hear him being mentioned within the first 20 seconds of the intro by Natasha Kaplinsky, and seeing him in such a popular event. :D Thoroughly enjoyed his performance, although don't think Jamelia's voice was quite strong enough, she sounded airy, if you know what I mean. You probably don't but never mind!
With the Spamalot thing, I only saw it as poking fun at musicals in general, but now you mention the Meat thing!

Just realised with horror last night: Peter and Katie is one letter away from being my parents' names! :faint: :panic:

EDIT: by the way, who was that youngish comedian with the dark hair in the suit who came out after the Iranian guy with the different walks? He actually made me laugh!:lmao: Only other stand ups to do that were Jasper Carrot and Billy Connelly.

I'm disagreeing.

I don't think meat can still do it live to be honest :o(

That doesn't mean I'm gonna enjoy seeing him any less next year.

Just listening to some old live stuff and his voice was fantastic then!

Now, I dunno, I've only really seen live stuff from my first CHSIB tour show and its just nowhere near as good as it used to be.

The RAH clips i've seen sound meh.

I did enjoy the US stuff where meat is out in the cold and the Batman car!

Last night, meats performance was fantastic until the mic was turned on.

Still, great to see him and enjoyed it :) was worth sitting through the crap for!

 :bicker: :rly: :bicker:

OK Kevin,
Though I respect this as your opinion please keep this to yourself. Meat doesn't need to read this and think if the shoe was on the other foot would you like that said about you? At a guess NO!
I love listening to Meat Live from 1978 or now and I can vouch for the fact that Meat was fantastic at the RAH and believe me alot of people here attened that show and can back that up. This post angered me I am not going to pretend it didn't!
