Got that question in my mind for some weeks, maybe you can help me:
I absolutely dont get the Left in the Dark lyrics:
She cheated on him but now shes back.
He feels his pain but now it´s unimportant, he just wants to 'make love'(:eyebrows:)
But why?
Why are the lyrics:
I just need some love (:yep:)
so turn out the light (:yep:)
and I´ll be left in the dark again ()
why is he left again when she came back and wants to 'make love'
I dont get the sense of that line.....
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Because in the past while she was being unfaithful he was left in the dark ... i.e. he didn't know what was going on. Now she's back he's saying turn out the lights ... so it's a different type of darkness.

ok i had to re-listen to make sure i was right but as with all songs i guess there are a few interpretations, but for what its worth heres mine.
He knows she's cheating, he wants to know the details but not right now.
with the light on he has reminders of her betrayal told in the following lines:
"i bet you still got a trace of his love in your eyes"
"i see the look in your eyes and i got the proof"
"there are more lies on your body"
these visuals constantly remind him so he wants to turn off the light and be "left in the dark again" so he can pretend he still doesn't know.
Not sure this makes sense but i know what i mean!

Yup it's definitly "and there are no lies on your body so take off your dress".
What's so difficult to understand about "again" young Padawan?
I simply assume that this is all about a guy singing to a woman who has just come home from cheating on him (at least that's what he thinks/believes). Obviously this woman means everything to him and before he met her he was in the dark (ie she was/is the light in his life), now he could be in the dark again as he releases she wants something she couldn't get from him. Makes pretty much sense to me.

Really a good review! Thanks!
...And, as indicated above, even the deceived husbond needs some tangible love more than he needs his wife's answers and explanations - he wants to be "left in the dark again". ...
but there´s still the point of the again, which i dont get

But the problem which I see, or the point I dont get is the following:
He is ready to make love, and according to his again, THIS is what will leave him in the dark.
so he´s left in the dark when the lights are turned off and they make love.
BUT
the again says to me that there has been something comparable to that before.
He was left in the dark before....
left in the dark = bad feeling, alone, sad, cheated
left in the dark again = the lights are off and they make love
which is, emotionally seen, the complete difference....
see my point now...:sherlock:

 OK, my run down on what the song means.
The most importaint thing is what is meant be the term "left in the dark".
Do you take it literally (it's dark) or the more common metephrical meaning, that you are ignorant/without information on a particular subject.
I got with the metophore.
There's this dude (technical term there  ) and he's with a complete slapper (another tech term).
She fools around on him, and he knows it, but he has no proof of it.
It's more like instinct.
However, he tries to believe her alibies, and he himself makes up excuses why she doesn't turn up sometimes.
He is fooling himself as much as she is.
Now when she comes home, he wants her to make love to him.
This will make him "feel" loved, and it will reashure him that the suspicion (or knowledge) of her infidelity is all in his mind, and he will be "left in the dark again".
He will once more convice himself that she is not being unfathful.
She will turn off the light, they will make love, he'll believe she loves him, and he will be in the dark again.

so you say the fact that she makes love to him is a proof of his stupidity?:sherlock:
how about that:
He wants a proof for that she still loves him, but she will only make love to him because she knows that he wants/needs that proof. And the FACT that she does it, is the proof of her cheating and guilty conscience for what she´d done and with that proof he KNOWS that he´s left in the dark....again.
huh?

 But who is to say WHY she is making love to him?
Is she making love to him because she has a guilty concience, or is she making love to him because she loves him?
Does she EVEN make love to him?
The songs stops before they get that far  .
The possibility that he is wrong about what's going on is the thing that allows him to keep himself in the dark.
He has an instinct what is going on.He knows it.But he's never been told it, and he's never seen her cheat.
Without that evidence, he can still deny what is going on.
Now don't forget that (as far as I take the song), this song is never sang to her.
These are things the guy WANTS to say.
But how can he say that without any proof.
And we wouldn't even want the proof anyway because he'd no longer be able to fool himself.

When he used to sing it on the 1996 WTTN Tour, Meat Loaf used to be sitting in an arm chair with a (lit) lamp beside him. At the end of the song, he'd turn the lamp off and then there'd be a little gap before he asked that burning question...."who made the first move?".
It always seemed to me that in that respect he didn't want to be left in the dark about why or how she'd cheated on him.

he doesn't want to admit to himself that she has tainted the relationship by cheating on him so he'll just deny the feelings of pain that he has and let her deny her feelings of guilt...
As a relationship it'd be dead in the water really
No, he just wants to sleep. He was sleeping...almost 3 am...she barges in...turns up the lights...and starts nagging the heck out of him...so he says...oh go on...just take off your dress, you daft cow...and she probably doesn't...so he says...then turn off the fecking light...I want to sleep...

but to get back ON TOPIC (<--- look here mods!*bootlicking*)
I think the main problem is still the AGAIN
he is left in the dark again
he has a bad feeling which he had before
but now, instead of before, she´s here and wants to...erm...:bleh:...youknowwhat
so we need the bad aspect which her coming back to him, causes in his mind
Hypnobabe
04 Oct 2006, 18:19
I think the bad aspect is denial - if he can persuade her to give him some love, then he can TRY to convince himself she isn't having an affair with someone else, but in his heart of hearts, he knows there is, and that causes a conflict, or bad feeling in him.
That's my take on it, anyway
AndrewG
04 Oct 2006, 18:20
I'm sure no matter what you write Hypno RJ will still be asking about "again" again. LOL
It's quite clear to me ...
she left him in the dark before when she went off and did her stuff with her other lover ...
he says he "wants some love" now ... so "turn off the lights and I'll be left in the dark again" meaning to me that he wants her to pretend that she doesn't know that he knows that she's been a naughty girl ... assuming of course it is a she ... it could be a she in a dress, I don't think Jim was that specific when he wrote the lyrics :))

No...what he said was...he creates characters for the songs he sings to be able to perform them.
So he imagines character in Left In the Dark as a WOMAN...
Not woman to another woman...

Yeah I heard him say that once also. Obviously the lyrics would indicate two women lovers then, but I guess at the heart of the song it is possible that Jim envisaged a women and just changed the lyrics to suit a male singer.

you know she's with someone else, you can imagine what there doing, its tearing you apart. your scared to know what exactly is going on. but you need to know the gory details but the pain is to great, so all you want to do is go to bed make love and for a few moments pretend nothing has happened.
Listen to the Steinman's original version on Bad for Good and listen closely to both the spoken intro and ending as this both sets up and concludes the song perfectly.

I am not sure I see your point.
My comment was about wenners post. What I said was that women experience EXACTLY the same feelings as he has described for men while discussing lyrics to this song.
I've heard Barbra's version and I don't like it. I believe she might have been able to pull it off but the whole thing was in the wrong for the song key in my opinion, never mind anything else.
I'll take Meat's version any day over it...still doesn't mean that woman can't experience EXACTLY the same emotions as wenners has described for men. AND...Barbra Streisand are not ALL women...and not even an average representative...

My point is. This thread is about Left In The Dark and the comments given are for the lyrics from a man's perspective. You say it's the same for women, so..... regardless of Babs' singing or the production, do the lyrical changes in the song reflect a womans point, ould they be the type of things a woman would say or do?

I think these lyrics are close enough to what Babs sang:
Where did she touch you,
How did if feel,
Why did you let it begin
What did she whisper and
What did it mean, and
Where do you think it will end?
How long did it last
Do you think it will stop
Did you get to try anything...new
How good was she - honestly
Where did you go and
Who made the very first move, who made the very first move,
Who made the very first move..
You don't have to sneak in the doorway
Just come on into the room
I've been lying in our bed in the dark all alone
And I've been waiting, I've been waiting for you
There's been no reason to move
It's been as still as a tomb
I needed you oh so badly tonight
But I guess you had better things to do
I should have known that it was coming to this
But I must have been blind
I bet you still got a trace of her love in your eyes
And you've still got her eyes on your mind
You swore you'd be with me at 7 o'clock
Now it's a quarter to 3
And whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it from me
Whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it from me
I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
As I see you undress ooooh
I just want to get at the truth
I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
As I watch you undress
I just want to get at the truth
There are so many thing that I've just just gotta know
You tell me who! You tell me where! You tell me when!
But don't tell me now , I don't need any answers tonight
I just need some love so turn out the lights and
I'll be left in the dark again
I'll be left in the dark again
I'll be left in the dark again
Left in the dark again
I should have known that it was coming to this
But I must have been blind
I bet you still got a trace of her love in you eyes

Pud, I think we will have to take this discussion into the chatroom next time we're both there...not sure what you're trying to ask me - seriously.
The reason I can see Meat imagining himself as a woman in that song is that song is somehow...too needy and too whiny...sure, men feel that way...but for a strong man it may not be easy to feel that way...most strong men (as well as women???) would just feel angry...I think?

It depends on the way YOU hear that song...
IMO it is absolutely not whiny, I see it more sarcastic.
"I needed you so badly tonight, but I guess you had better things to do"
But as I read it again...sure...it can also be interpreted as whiny.
