Hi,
I bought myself the storytellers DVD and just want to post my opinion.
I think itīs very interessting, you see his site as a funny and entertaining guy.
Most of all, when he explains "that" and of course the thing with Paradise.
I heard it with stereo headphones, but i think that the sound is not so very good mixed.
I was like Meat is just on the left ear and the audience just on the right. I will listen to it with my Dolby-headphones soon. Is there a difference?
When I bought it on amazon, i read that the length is about 50 minutes, i think that is wrong. I didnīt look at the clock, but i think it was something about 2 hours (And i dont mean that there was written, that there are 54 minutes of unsend material).
The only one thing that is not good is that he doesnīt sing the full songs. With some he did, but not with all.
Like with all revved up, there he sang just the first lines.
I was very sceptic about it before i bought it, but now i see that i was wrong. Itīs a very great thing! Somewhere on this forum i wrote that i whouldnīt buy it, because itīs not a real concert, for that post i am sorry. Itīs great!
To everyone who hasnīt got it already: BUY IT! NOW!!! Itīs really worth the cost!
What do you think about it?
R.
I only have a CD... I found myself being very hesitant about visual material - somehow I am more into listening...but ML comes through as very human and often hysterically funny even on the CD...but then just by his book you can tell that he is funny...I was crying from laughter sometimes when I read the book.

I love the Storyteller's DVD.....Must say it is on par with MSO DVD. Meat, like you say comes across as a very genuine and real down to earth guy and the way he interacts with the audience and with the band members is great.....Just a real great show.
I dont have the CD. Is it the same track listing as on the DVD??

I absolutely agree SuperLoafMan :)) It's excellent !! As much as I love the MSO DVD, Storytellers will always be my favorite ... mainly because hearing Meat and Patti singing Paradise (and then watching them when the show was on VH1) is what got me hooked on his music :-) I can still remember wanting to throw something at the tv when he said "stay tuned for the 2nd half of the song after these commercial messages" :lmao:
In answer to your question .. no, the track listing is different on the CD.
Here's the list :
CD
All Revved Up With No Place To Go (Intro)
Life Is A Lemon And I Want My Money Back (not on DVD)
Story
You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth
Story
I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)
Lawyers, Guns & Money
Story
More Than You Deserve
Story
Heaven Can Wait
Story
Paradise By The Dashboard Light
Story
Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
Bat Out Of Hell
Bonus Track : Is Noth Sacred (Single Version)
The stories are slightly different and the songs : Life Is A Lemon and Lawyers, Guns & Money aren't on the DVD.
However, the songs : Rock 'N Roll Dreams and A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste are on the DVD but not the CD :-) And on the DVD, Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad is in the beginning, whereas on the CD it's near the end.
The CD and DVD really compliment each other.
Hope this helps
Vicki
I love the version on Hot Summer Night on the CD. It's about my all time favourite version of that, I reckon, maybe because there is the mental images to go with it (that gorgeous smile in "My soul is flying high above the ground", for example), plus the ad libs....
I have the dvd and I love it!!! :))

I don't think Storytellers suits him- it doesn't seem rite Meat just sitting there for the whole concert; it's far better when he expresses himself properly and is all over the stage.

I disagree ... I think it suits him perfectly. I just wish I had been able to go see one of the shows when he did the Storytellers tour :(
To me Storytellers is more like a documentary, not a concert, and it's great just to sit back and relax, watching / listening to Meat tell the stories about the songs. Meat's got a great sense of humor, and it really shines through during the entire show. If I want to watch a true Meat Loaf concert, I watch the MSO DVD :-) The two DVDs compliment each other perfectly.

I agree...can't view Storytellers as a concert...more like documentary/interview...which is completely different genre from his concerts...different...but not worse as far as I am concerned...

Thanks Vicki for that, I will be shopping around now looking for it, although i have not yet seen it in any UK high street stores
It is also a real shame that Rock N Roll Dreams isnt on the CD because it is an absolutely great version on the DVD one of my faves on there, and a shame about Kiss too, thats a good version on there too. But Paradise and the chemistry between Meat and Patti is ace!!
I bet LIAL is good too.....Thanks Ross :D

I have to disagree again, it is great to see a whole different side to him, as well as the great, operatic singer on stage that he is. and i think that the show which was recorded for the DVD suits his to the ground!

I have both the DVD and the CD of this concert.
I think they are amazing....i also think they show the versitility of Meat, this DVD and the MSO DVD are both completely different but yet they are both amazing!
I love it!!!!

I can't find it in the stores around here either ... but I think it's still available through Amazon.com. And I've seen it come up on Ebay every once in a while.. good luck !!
Right you are about Rock N Roll Dreams, Kiss and Paradise :))
LIAL is excellent .... it's a shame it was only on the CD and not on the DVD.
I remember Meat saying in an interview that they filmed for over 3 hours, and the only reason they stopped was because they ran out of film  I would have loved to have seen the complete unedited version of the show :))

Hi, I haven't posted here in a while. Thought i'd chime in on two things - LIAL is only on the CD because it 'technically' isn't from the Storytellers show, it comes from the Hard Rock Live performance. I went to both tapings.
And yes, Meat did film for over three hours that night, but from what I recall it was mostly due to the Stories being told, there weren't too many extra songs performed on Storytellers night. Both tapings were pretty cool, but I am kind of partial to the Hard Rock taping as it was mostly performances and not too much chatting. Storytellers was also neat to watch in the making, especially soundcheck (we were in the studio earlier then expected) hearing Kasim and Patti sing lead on some of the songs but the atmosphere was different due to the tons of talking and stopping (looking for more film :) !). Take care!

I think the ST and the MSO DVDs are both great, but in very different ways. somewhere i wrote that it ainīt a concert DVD for me, but i think it is unimportant how the both DVDs are classified as long as we enjoy watching them.

Iīm waiting for live around the world and my new DVD-player...
(actually both should arrive today,... but it didnt!)
CD Rocks, Some fine recordings. I enjoy both much equally. The version of 'Took The Words' is insane. I love Pearl's and Patti's voice together.

I have both the cd and the dvd.
Having watched the dvd the main thing that comes across is how relaxed he looks, sitting down and performing, that is until he does Bat.
I think Bat is probably my favourite song to watch on the dvd, not in terms of the quality of it but more of the intensity of Meat as he performs, the way he tries to psyche himself up for the last three 'Like a bat out of hell''s.
He does a great version of 'A Kiss is a terrible thing to waste' i'm just sorry it wasn't on the cd, same goes for 'Rock n roll dreams come through'
It wouldve also been great to have seen VH1's original idea of having Steinman and Meat Loaf together performing and giving the background into each song.

One thing that i canīt understand, is how he can put so much emotion into that song, especially in the last verses. I mean, the man is doing that song nearly every night again (on tours), and that for nearly 30 years. If I would do that so many times, it would be routine for a long time, and i wouldnīt got any emotion anymore while singing this...

He is an actor...he gets into the role/part every time he sings the song...

He is an actor...he gets into the role/part every time he sings the song...
But after some time it must be just,... boring... to do one role everytime again.
We had a singer here in Germany, called Rex Gildo, he did one song everytime again and he had no other sucessful song, just "Fiesta Mexicana".
And about 10 years ago, he had enough of it, and jumped out of the window of the 4th floor.

... i can't imagine that was the only reason he jumped out a window.. ... however..Meat was asked ..just that question... if he ever tires of singing ie Paradise.. i believe ..and the answer was.. no ...
anyroad..when it comes to Paradise..imo.. each tour..there's always something magic..and always something new.. ergo ipso facto... he doesn't tire of it..and neither do i... ;) ...
tink..and her two cents ****ed..... oops..she means.. thrown.. lol...

I don't know if you intended this to be funny...and I am sorry if you didn't...but I am laughing so hard here I am crying...Listen...if I had a name like Gildo (rhymes with something else) I would have jumped regardless.
Seriously speaking - I know what you mean and I have to say this. I think ML is one of the most gracious performers there is. He knows that no matter what he does and/or what he sings...his fans would want to hear Paradise and Bat...and he doesn't disappoint, although these are complicated songs and take a lot out of him. I believe he keeps on singing them for his fans...and not for his wealth and certainly not for his health (misquoting Everything Louder Than Everything Else). I don't believe he ever performed these songs exactly the same way though...Paradise in Radio City Hall in NY was like a little play in 3 or so acts - didn't see that type of performance before or again.
Once again...we, as fans, expect certain songs from our idols. Bonnie Tyler would have been expected to sing Total Eclipse of The Heart until she is 90 and if Freddie Mercury would have been alive, he would still be expected to sing We're The Champions. And many of those performers just want to sing new stuff regardless of their fans...so, once again...ML just delivers what his fans expect him to...
I am so sorry this is so long...and I might be wrong...but this is what I think...
tink wrote:

Yes, and he's also suggested you ask any actor if they tire of performing for eg a Shakespearean role .. his point being that because he performs the songs, rather than merely sings them, he doesn't tire of them .. Particularly because, as you say, he builds differences in delivery each time.
Yes. I suspect he performs certain songs at every show because he knows his fans will want to hear them .. but I also think he does this because they're great songs and he enjoys the delivery, and doesn't do this just to please us, but because he CAN bring something new to them each time and keep them fresh .. and that's the challenge for an actor, and the challenge in creativity that I believe he relishes :)
Caryl
You both are quite right. As Mszee said, Meat does indeed know that BOOH and Paradise are top fan favorites, and songs he is known for. And at the same time, as CarylB said, he performs them rather than sings them, so he does indeed relish doing them differently each time as a challenge for him in interpretation and improvisation. As various band members have said, you never know what Meat will do next, and Meat said that of himself on the MSO commentary.

I think youīre right.
But I think thatīs also important for him, that the fans donīt want to hear just the "old" songs. They wanna hear the new songs, too.
I never heard someone say "Man, we donīthis F**king CHSIB stuff, sing Paradise or get off that F**king stage!!!"
Do You know what I mean?

Although I see your point...I don't think any of us have any idea what would have happened if he, in fact, didn't sing BOOH or PBTDL in one of his concerts. I actually was to some concerts of other artists where audience expected certain song/songs to be performed and artist decided to omit them. When fans realize that this is the end of the performance...and "their" song/songs were not performed...they go berserk...I know one singer (no name) whose subsequent concert to the one, where she skipped expected song and refused to sing it upon request, was boycotted by her fans.I know it's an extreme example...but you never know...
To go back to the thought of Meat being bored with BOOH...
It came as a surprise to me to learn that tour books for the *same* tour differ from country to country, so apologies to anyone who has seen this.
In my CHSIB tour book, there are a series of questions to Meat and his answers. One of the questions asked is "Aren't you sick of Bat Out Of Hell?"
Meat replies: "Absolutely not. I couldn't possibly be. Do classical musicians get tired of playing great Mahler pieces? They do not because there's so much inspiration inside every note. It's like, I've seen the play Death of a Salesman so many times, but I'll keep seeing it. Listen to me, there is so much quality, so much intrigue and so much passion inside thoses lyrics and that music that I could never get tired of singing it. It's a new moment every time I do it. I have Bat Out Of Hell in my car and I listen to it there. It's magic."

Does anyone know how many different versions there are of the CHSIB tour book? In the UK there was the one Ross mentions above with the typo. There was a later reprint during the UK leg of the tour with the correct spelling and quite a number of different photos to the first book. The Australian/New Zealand tour book has many different photos and page layouts to either of the UK ones.
Maybe the American book is different as well.
This doesn't seem to be too unusual ...... the same thing happened with the Best Of tour book but to a lesser extent.
Diane
The American book is different, but vrg can fill you in on that better than I can.
Thanks Lotus. I had a feeling it might be!
Apologies for taking this thread off topic ....

I do have the CHSIB tourbook as Lotus mentioned. She and I had discovered differences before. I'll take a look and compare on what has been mentioned on this thread.
