View Full Version : Live In Melbourne DVD - My thoughts...
Mr Plant
28 Apr 2006, 15:05
Hi!
This is my first posting. I just wanted to say that although I have been a "fan" since as far back as I can remember... In that as a youngster I remember watching Meat and Cher do "Dead Ringer", heard Bat 1 on the radio all the time (even bought it eventually!!).. Clearly remember the video for "Midnight at the lost and found", loved Bat 2 when it came out...!, have owned the singles DVD for ages etc. etc.. my point???
Ok I admit it - I've never yet been to a live concert! ouch!!!
I hope to rectify that one day, Meat permitting!! He has played in Scotland a few times after all throuought his career!
My point of posting is, I just got the Melbourne DVD (I know I got it later than everyone else in here...) but.. wow did it blow me away!!
I have about a hundred music DVD's - but this is pure rock and roll theatre - and what a performance from Meat!!! I can't get enought of it!
I wish I had seen this tour.. there is always hope..
Anyway point of my post is to just say I think its a fantastic DVD - the commentary track is fun enough in itself!! (Especially everytime Meat glimpses CC!! hahah)...
For someone his age - he blows everyone else out the water!! More talent in his pinkie than in some twenty-something pop star wannabes of today!!!
Long may he reign!!!

Hope you get your chance to see Meat live in concert.

hahah Just I've been watching this DVD all week and had to share my views with the real fans over here! Great resource here by the way - reading up all the news on Bat 3 and of course Fireballs posts!! Great that he actually takes the time to pop in here now and again and what's more - answer people's questions - not many stars actually bother to do that today - and I visit a lot of other music stars websites!

You got the same problem like me, I think that weīre the only two persons on this forum, who havenīt been to one of his concerts, but with the Bat3 Tour our time will come!!!
Have fun here, great site!

PS: for comprehensibility: the common abbreviation for the Melbourne DVD is around here just MSO.
And I register the first after motions vote for the best first posting.
You started very well with the MSO; it was Meat at his best and most dymanic.
Can't help but notice that your ID is Mr. Plant - like in a relative of Robert Plant of rock'n'roll fame?

I have to agree...My wife and I have the Melbourne DVD playing so much, I'm afraid we'll eventually destroy the disk, but who cares, this is one of the greatest shows in Rock and Roll history! I'm just glad Meat shared this performance with his fans. We got to see Meat in NY at the Beacon theatre last August and were in awe! We're hoping Meat will also tour for Bat 3 because we're dying to go see him live yet again. Long live Meat Loaf and the Melbourne DVD!
Welcome to the neighborhood, Mr. Plant. :))
Awesome post about the MSO dvd, I couldn't agree more! :))

I bought myself some dolby sorroud headphones last week and listened to the MSO DVD.
I heard things iīve never heard before on it.
Like:
In the middle of Frying pan, he sings "i gotta take you, i wanna take you" and so on. there is a girl in the audience screaming "Take me! Take me!"
Just wanted to post it.

Does somebody disagree?

Well. it's the best I have seen. :-)
I agree it's the best concert out on DVD, both Dolby 5.1 and DTS tracks are superb, but the DTS grabs it, as the AUDIO isn't compressed like the dolby is, so if you can manage to hear the DTS track, I recommend it. The only disapointment to me, and it is only minor, is the bad pixelation the picture suffers at times, I think this is due to the type of cameras the filmakers used, but it could have been sorted by a higher bit rate when placed onto disc, but apart from that, really great DVD, and as far as I know, if you check on IMDB, you will find it hard to find another DVD concert what beats it's /10 rating, there is a few but not many. :D
I agree, for a while I thought Meat might have lost it a little with age but MSO was amazing- he's still got it, I love his performances especially the way he moves, it's pure passion.

Yeah.. the MSO DVD is amazing... it's incredible to see how Meat controls the crowd during "took the words" and I absolutely loved frying pan... mark alexander was brilliant on the piano and not to forget, Paul... this guys is a metal God.
P.S. I too have never been to a meat concert.. but with where I stay, I doubt I'll ever be able to see one. The only live one i've been to is Byran Adams.

The big difference between Meatīs concerts and those of other "rockstars" is that he isnīt afraid to fall out of his role or play a little game like:
"Paradise....by...the dash-....-board...
(to K. Levenson)
I thing you hit the note a little bit early!
Cut! Letīs go back!
by the dash-...-board...light. Give him a big hand!!!"
Or on storytellers:
Patti sings: "Sooner or later youīll be screwing around!"
Meat: "why did you say thet?
Patti: Because thatīs the lyric!
Meat: Oh, Okay, (sings) I wonīt do that!"
Such things are great! I donīt know many other artists who are doing such things

Welcome All the Newbies:D
We can only hope and pray that Meat does another tour. As Ive admitted before, I have only been to one concert. First I was banned by my father, then I never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Finally got to see him on the Last World Tour. Which I hope really isnt his last.:cheer:
I know that Meat said somewhere. Cant remember if it was in a concert or in his book, that whats the point of performing the songs the same as whats on the album. You might as well just buy the album. I know they arnt his exact words but thats what he means. I love the way he changes things around. Makes me want to buy everything that I can as you never know what you are going to get.
Have a good night everyone:yawn: Im off to bed. Work tomorrow:(

Add me to the long list of people who love the MSO DVD! I love Storytellers too but MSO is my favorite.

I agree! and it's so much fun when it's at a live show and they do these funny bits - and there are lots of little differences from show to show on the same tour. Even when the setlist is exactly the same, the show itself is always fresh, always new and exciting.. Can you tell I'm looking forward to Bat3

I agree, it's one of the great things that sets Meat apart from other performers, and makes every performance special for the fans. As he's not afraid to change things around, add or subtract bits from show to show, it's always a treat to see what he'll do differant each time. I love it!! :))

Saturday 27th of May, I bought the DVD "Meat Loaf live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra". That day I've heard it too and I never can get enough of it. Tonight I've heard it with commentary, but it drives me crazy.
One thing I don't like is the end of the song "For Crying out Loud". It just liked Meat Loaf forgot the text....
But this DVD is the first Live DVD I bought and I like it. (I think everybody likes it.)
My kids bought me the DVD for my birthday, I must say, I really enjoyed it, have watched it umpteen times and will watch it umpteen more times, the atmosphere during "Couldn't have said it better" was amazing, I willed her to go hug him. Clearly they are both excellent actors.

One thing I can never understand is why the audience is sat down nearly all the time. Are people near the front told to sit down by stewards? Or are they just being lazy? Or is it 'cultural'. The crowd at the show I went to in Birmingham seemed much livlier. Always seems to me that these MSO audiences are not responding too or giving much back. I'm I the only one to notice this?

I think nearly everyone noticed that.
I think that the audience were on the one hand ML fans and on the other hand people who listen to classical, symphonical music, which would visit every MSO concert, so these people are not the common "rockers"....

I love it too, so I'll state the best moments and the worst moments.
BEST: For Crying Out Loud (Completely breathtaking, I'm always on the verge of crying after that one)
Everything else is great, but that's my fav.
WORST: The way Patti looks when she sings, "screwing around" on the end of AFL. It drives me crazy! No offense, but I hate the way she does that, just makes me cringe! Something with her face.
Also, she sounds too glorified when she yells, "stop right there!" on Paradise, and that's just ick.
Otherwise, perfect DVD!

Yeah, Iīve noticed that too, itīs the way she sits on that couch and looks down to him...

Jackoutofhell: "... WORST: The way Patti looks when she sings, "screwing around" on the end of AFL. It drives me crazy! No offense, but I hate the way she does that, just makes me cringe! Something with her face."
Fellows:
Patti acts her role in AFL perfectly. At the risk of sounding life-worn, you must understand that when a woman is accusing a man of 'screwing around', or forecasting that he will do so, she doesn't want to hug and kiss him at that moment, BELIEVE ME!

Wowowow....calm down please!:))
That shouldnt be an offense, I just tried to say that the way she looks isnt great, I wasnt talking about acting. I meant things like tha camera angle or the light setting.
Imo the MSO interpretation of AFL is one of his best...
*afraid, creeping under the desk*
LOL: I didn't mean to scare you, and I wasn't taking offense at all. I just wanted to make sure you understand how a woman feels at that moment you were talking about. You're right, it isn't a pretty expression, but a woman is only feeling anger at a moment like that, and Patti was dead-on with her expression of that.

Anyway, Mr Plant, I share your view. The MSO DVD is absolutely f-ing awesome, and I never nearly swear on here! Also, the live version of BOOH is (in my opinion) also f-ing awesome, and I prefer it to the album version.
For someone his age - he blows everyone else out the water!! More talent in his pinkie than in some twenty-something pop star wannabes of today!!!
Absolutely - whatever age he is, has been, or will be, he blows EVERYONE else away - regardless of their age! Rock on Fire Ball.

ahhem....mind if i interrupt here? yeahhh...rhetorical questions....stupid, i know
so, my question: did you ever notice that on the pre-show-ritual meat is calling for a lady called deborah....?! could it be.....?
i have never seen a single pic of *the* deborah, but did any of you?
i mean it could of course be a coincidence....what dyou think?
Go on getty images, wireimage, corbis and you find loads of pics of Meat and Deborah at various events.

In my opinion, Meat sings SO MUCH BETTER now than he did in the 70s. If you visit the multimedia section on the Steinman site, you can download some live performances of Bat from the early years, but the version on MSO is FAR superior (IMO.) Not that he was bad back then, but he has matured so well through the years, and I happen to prefer his current vocals. Actually, Bat on MSO is probably my favorite version. You probably think I'm crazy, but oh well, that DVD has the best live performances I've ever seen.
