Why? What is the other side?

Tim
16 Feb 2003, 15:51
It is powerfull, great lyrics, beautifull, but the other side is that it is empty, nothing......... Think you will have to listen to this song when you are in a special mood orso.

An amazing song, one of the best songs from this (like most songs from this album). Great lyrics, powerfull music.

Jim Steinman's best song he has ever written! I think one of the best song Jim has ever written

My score: 9

this song is difficult to listen to. It doesn't make me happy. That's why you have to be in a specific mood for it. For example, if you feel f... happy, you're not gonna listen to this song. If you feel very sad: yóu're not gonna listen to this song. So, in one way or the other Tim is right about that.
Anyway, it's still one of the best. 9,5/10.

I think the "Live Around The World" version is very nice. I love the end with deep feeling. Very slow and it's great!

Tim!
You mean it for example "Man And A Woman" is better than "Objects"?

I don't hope he means that!

Well......do you want a real discussion about this song???

Man and Woman is a great song. Don't know what is wrong with that song. Objects is a beautifull song, but so different. Man and Woman is a love song. Objects is a song about abuse, dead, friendship and power. Different themes. Also it is written by other writers so.....

Don't think you can compare those 2 with each other.

My opinion is, that "Objects" has one of the greatest lyrics ever. I've already said in the "Sunshine" thread, that Meat is really good in singing sad songs and so it is. When I listen Meat singing this great, powerful ballad, it seems to me, that the things he sings about, were his own experiences. Things, which happened once in his own youth. There are three seperate strokes of fate in this song. The first is the death of his best friend, who died in an accident. Then, the second is about his uncaring father, who is addicted to alcohol and is terrorising his family. And the third stroke of fate is about a girl, his first love. She was the sense of his life, but then, suddenly she disappeared. I've never heard someone before, who can sing the lyrics of a song so deeply, as if it also could be a story of his own life. And Jim has composed such a great melody. If "Objects" were without the lyrics, only the melody, you could also recognize the things the song is about. Even without the lyrics, you can hear the words, the music is whispering to you. You can't compare another song with "Objects In The Rear View Mirror". This song is an unicate!

I think Objects isn't so much about the different particular experiences he refers to but rather about being haunted by formative experiences in general, not being able to escape them. Living in the past instead of shaping the future. Those events all happened in the past and should be left there, while you move on, but you can't tear lose of them, they always come back to trouble you.
This is a song in the vein of A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste IMO.

Man And A Woman a beautiful song???? I think it is the WORST song ever been sung by Meat. Objects one of the bests. So I need to agree, you can't compare them.

 Great song.
What can I say?The music and lyrics are fantastic.
Meat's voice is great.I love the way that Meat is singing like he's telling a story. Then the music gets faster and Meat's voice gets higher as the memories come flooding back with more urgency.
Just thinking of this song gives me shivers.
9/10 Memorable.

Do not remember where or when, but I do remember that either Meat or Jim told in an interview (I have somewhere on tape) that they didn't want to release the album, because it didn't feel finished. Then Jim did write Objects in the Rear View Mirror and they felt that is was completed.
According to Jim it was the toughest song he had ever written.
Like most of Jim's songs this one is so about deep emotions and make you think about life. Because everyone has had situations like that and has to face life with those memories that sometimes seem to rule how you do and feel.
To me it showed that I don't have to forget the past, but that I may look forward without the pressure of fears from my younger years.

"So many wasted years before my life became my own!"

Thanks Jim for writing and Meat singing those great songs which pulled my through and made me the person who I am today.

I'm not going to rate this song, but this particular one was - long ago - the 'hook' for me to get more into BatII.
Today - I'm here as your host. 8)

Crazy - as time goes by - I do remember discovering the BatII CD in my mailbox (what completely surprised me 8O) on release day.
But that's a different story. Completely different.

:D

yeah, that is true. Everybody just wantedto release the record except Jim. He insisted to write another song. The release dat was postponed by a year and Virging did not like Bat II no more!! Too much money they spent on it.
Anyway this song is an epic song. It is not autobiographic. Not any song of Meat and/or Jim is autobiographic. This song is about someones live. He looks back in the past. Now he is old(er) and wise and looks back at his youth. That's all. The new songs on Bat II have this themes (Life is a Lemon/ Everything louder).

Think i've to agree with the posts before me. It is a strange song. I don't want to rate it, cause my opion is diferent each time i listen to it. Sometimes it is a great song, but sometimes i just hate the song!! Don't know what it is, maybe it is a bit of the truth that lies in it.

I like to be moved b the music that I listen to, that's one of the reasons why I got into Meat's music n the first place. His voice and the songs have the power to move me like no other artist can. And I think that this song is obe of the bets examples of this effect that music can have on me. It breaks my heart everytime I listen to it.

And the video adds yet another layer. Meats performance is fantastic, and I actually cried the first time I saw it.

To conclude, I would give this song (video included):

(I can't even rate this song in terms of points out of 10, but I think you get the gist of it! :D

I love the song as a whole, but I have to say that the intro is the best of any song I have ever heard - whatever you are doing you just stop, shut your eyes and fall into his world. Jim's intros really are something else - whoever he is writing for. Its just that when the singing starts, it just has to be Meat!

I have to say this is a great song. The thing is with Meats Music is he is one of the few performers to actually put feeling into his music whereas now you get people singing the same type of songs over and over.

This is by far the best song ever written and performed by anyone in the history of music. I also love the live version on live around the world where in the end the entire audience is completely silent.

yeah, that's right , it's on every car. back in the early nineties Jim Steinman liked the thought of those rearviewmirrors text. He imagined how he could write a song of that long text. So he wrote Objects.
Funny though that Jim Steinman likes the visions of cars and motorcycles and speed and all that stuff, but he doens't have his driving licence :!:

more if i could give it, it has everything; mood, feeling, story, pain and much more, there are now words that i could use to fully give this song justice just like "Lover her for the both of us". More songs like this!

A few years ago,i was out in my garden on a still summer evening,a car drew up and parked in the road, playing" Objects " full volume.
There was no other sound , just this hauntingly beautiful song drifting on the still night air......it was magical. I've never forgotten it.

Superb song, i can listen to it over and over, never grow tired of it.Meat's voice is so beautiful when singing this one.
Very powerful and beautiful lyrics
"There were endless winters and the dreams would freeze
No where to hide and no leaves on the trees"
Very poetic thought provoking lyrics
"But i can still recall the sting of all the tears when he was gone"
"And there was so much left to dream
And so much time to make it real"
"so many threats and fears- so many wasted years before
my life became my own"
Amazing.Musically as well as lyrically.
One of my favourites

One of my favourite songs of all time, as Meat's says the listener thinks about a story in their own lives, not his. The best way to listen to this, is to lie down and close your eyes and listen, a moment will soon come into your head. By the way excellent video by Micheal Bay.10/10

Originally derived from a Steinman crash song entitled "Renegade Angel" this song is truly a work of art. Meat and the record company wanted to put "Bat II" out without this song but Jimmy was persistant in writing one more song and quite frankly I can't imagine "Bat II" without this song on it. Every detail is so in depth and you can get such a great taste of Jimmy's great sexual images in the 3rd verse of the song. It's very tragic and who else but Jim Steinman could think of a title for a song like this one. Meat delivers the song perfectly as well. The hell with the critics that say this could be a Springsteen parady, this is completely different then anything the Boss has ever written. Also, this song really separated the two "Bat" albums as this was much more dramatic then anything on "Bat I".

The part about Kenny in this song reminds me of my friend Sidney and how he died in a car accident. The first and last parts, I heard, relate to Jim's experiences whereas the middle experience relates to Meat's childhood as evidenced in "To Hell And Back"

I believe Meat has never sung a song better than this one and it truly is my favourite all time Meat Loaf song. Pure perfection

Can you say anything WOH? The answer is NO. You are absolute correct, but sure say why you like it. Cause the answer is simple. It is an amazing incredible song by Meat & Jimmy. Everything is just down right PURE. I love the music and the words and the vocals. I love how they got guitar and these car sound effects in there, the song is truely in the Meat Top 5! I can't believe this almost never made it on Bat II. The album would have proably an 8 of 10 if this song wasn't on there. This song is truely 11 \ 10. Kenny is also mention in the Dead Ringer album. A Jim Meat album. Maybe (just maybe) Kenny is Jimmy's friend? And that girl at the end, is she also the one from Two Outta Three? That part in the middle, Meat buddy, I hear ya.

I lost alot of respect for the song when I heard the version on "Tanz" - known as "Die Unstillbare Gier". Meat's version is nothing compaired to the one on TANZ, but it still makes me cry. Generally, I enjoy them both - and they both scare me (immensely!). 9/10 (*because GIER got more to the point*)

I found the music for the whole album in a local library, try yours :) Don't try a shop called JG Windows. Apparently "you can't get that book anymore"
I'm telling you, it sounds absolutely great played on piano, even if like me you can't play it with two hands yet :) AFL intro is fantastic, I'm getting there with the two hands :D The whole thing just sounds amazing played on piano :D :D :D I love it!!!!!! I've never spent so long at my piano before I found it :D

One day my Dad picked me up from school in my brother's car. I got in and saw the text on the mirror. i read aloud "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear", and Dad said "Oh, that's one of your Mam's favourite songs, that!" I heard no more of it until I heard Bat II properly a couple of years later. I didn't know it was Meat, or I may have listened to it when I got home cos I knew where the tape of Bat II was!!!! Silly Dad!!!! Could have heard that album earlier!!! And when he said it was Mam's fave? It's actually his!!!

The "Tanz Der Vampire" version, as you call it, is the song "Die Unstilbare Gier". But that song only has some influences from Objects, like the verse melody. It's not a German version (like Total Eclipse/Totaler Finsternis), if that's what you think.

You're right in the sense it's an influence - but how much better is it? Still, there are parts missing from OBJECTS... which is a loss. I would, one day, like to see one of the instrumentals from OBJECTS played in GIER at a Tanz der Vampire production. It would be amazing

It is a wonderful song and very cathartic. I listen to it when I need to cry and give the past a funeral. It can be about anything you want it to be. A lot of powerful emotions involved in the song- situations common to all of us. The video is excellent, my favorite video for sure.
I thought the camera letting the viewer watch Meat as he watches his past was great.
