This is re the Kasim Sulton thread that you locked this evening....

How in the world could it have been expected that on a public forum and in an open thread that only two people would be allowed to post??? That sort of thing should be taken to private email, do you not think? I can see you wanting the two of them to communicate and work out their differences, but truly, on an open forum and thread may not be the best possible choice....

Quite simply, I made a decision.
I didn't bring this on to the forum, I just tried to deal with it.
This started publicly (with a lot of people jumping on the band wagon), and shuffling it out of sight (IMHO) solves NOTHING.
That's why I made that ruling.
I wanted the original poster (Sue) to state her grievence clearly and I wanted the person the post was aimed at (Vicki) to be given the chance to respond. To either apologise or justify her actions (HERSELF).

Now as for expecting people not to join in, I moderate this forum. When I make a ruling I expect people to abide by it.Does this sound like I am dictating to people?Yes I supose it does, BUT nobody has ever complained how i've handled things in the past.My decisions here have always been fair, impartial, to the point, and ALWAYS in the best interests of the forums.

It is much easier for a moderator to reach for the lock topic button than to trust the members to work with you and suport your decisions.

There were many people on the forum last night after my ruling who had taken part in the conversation. They didn't post anything. Why?Because they read my ruling, they respected it and they trusted me to handle the situation. For those who wanted to post and didn't, I thank you.My faith in you was truely justified 8) .

Unfortunatly there were those who thought it was a big joke and PISSED all over my ruling.
I don't like dictating to people. It's not often I have to put my moderators hat on and I don't like doing so.I prefare to work WITH people.Putting my foot down and locking threads is not what it's all about.
Last night my hand was forced. There were those who could not be mature enough to handle the situation like adults. When a moderator makes a ruling like this and people to continue to post for no other reason than cheap gags it seriously undermines the mlukfc forum team and affects how we can moderate in the future.

Basically, we can do one of two things, I can work with the members with mutual respect in keeping these forums a good place to visit, or, I can stamp my feet and lock threads whenever I feel like. Now THAT would be dictatorship.

BTW:I find it strange that although you are aparently agaist people airing their differences in public, you decided to pull up a moderator on the forum  .Not that I mind.It helps to keep my PM box from overflowing

Also, you don't need training to be a moderator here (as you've mentioned). All you need is a little common sence, the time to listen to people, and know when to treat a situation seriously.I think that's what R. looks for when he picks his mods

Well.... as a moderator it is your right of course to do as you see fit for a discussion on a pubic forum that you are guiding. But still as a visitor and participator, I perhaps can continue to ask questions?. What I did like about Pud's post for me is that he brought back the sense of how far these conflicts have gone, and how seriously they are being taken. He may have posted in the face of your ruling, and I replied... but his message was clear, at least it was to me. And if you expect two people to work something out together, perhaps a forum open to all is not the best choice. Two different ways to look at it, and you could be right and I entirely off track.

This is a very interesting place. ;) I do not know if I have ever seen anything quite like it. It has given me much food for thought, and in many ways has recently opened my own eyes as to how I weigh my days, my time, my values, my concerns, and even my treatment of others.

A really great place with some very interesting people and energy....

Have the best of days The Flying Mouse,
:D

One thing I DIDN'T like about Pud's posts (apart from the fact that Pud felt the need to post after a clear request not to do so  ) was this.

The Flying Mouse - This really isn't helping.
Pudding - No, but it is funny.

That kind of attitude not only makes my job here much more difficult, but shows complete disrespect for the forum and total disregard of it's moderators.Quite simply it's not on.

I'm all for injecting a little humour into a serious thread to lighten the atmosphere, but that isn't humour, that's being rude.

As i've already explained, the conversation began in public and hiding it would not gain us much apart from getting the PM jungle drums going.
My ruling WAS working. Many of the people who had posted had been by the thread, read the ruling, respected the ruling and abided with the ruling by not posting. If everybody did that then I am very confident that this could have been fully resolved in a very short space of time, rather than what has happened, that i've locked the thread, nothing more can be said.Nothing solved.Nothing resolved.

At the end of the day, that thread began a long time ago on a forum that I don't moderate. It was landed on my desk very late in the day when all meaning had already bailed.
I tried to moderate it, but without the co-operation of the whole membership, open moderation is doomed to fail and we have to revert to barking orders at people and locking threads. That doesn't make a forum a fun place to visit :(

I just hope that if I feel the need to use open moderation again it will be listened too.

Thanks, perhaps your comments would have been better served in a Private Message if I offended you that much. But saying that I'm glad that it wasn't, now people can see exactly how inept you are as a moderator and how easy it is to play God and blame someone else when things turn sour, instead of blaming themselves for not locking the thread sooner.

Have a terrific day.

A.If I am asked publicly why I locked the thread, and how I expect people not to answer a thread on a public forum, then I will answer in public.

B.If you or any other member finds me to be less than effective at moderating this forum, you are perfectly at liberty to lodge a formal complaint with R. as webmaster of mlukfc.com.

C.That thread went off the rails LONG before it was sent to Off Topic. Not an opinion.FACT.Rainer didn't see fit to lock this thread when he moved it, so I was willing to give it a chance to see if the problem could be resolved.
I made a decission.I stand by that decission, and I stand by my beliefe that if everybody respected that decission then resolution was still possible.
The ruling was ignored. That's why it was locked. Not opinion.FACT.
I can ask people to work with me, but if they refuse, I have no other choice than to lock the thread.

I should clarify that that post was meant to be an attempt at a teeny weeny bit of humour and not meant to be disrespectful. So please don't lock the thread
