Ive just watched the video for Man Of Steel (can be viewed from http://www.meatloaf.de) and what can i say...
I think its terrible... embarrassing even. If you havent yet seen it, its basically a clumsy animation, with lots of annoying screaching tire sound effects... (oh, and guess what? - we have even got a flying bat / man thing - just to keep the cliche alive). The video puts me in mind of Dire Straits - Money For Nothing video, which, i think im correct in saying, was the first computer generated video to be produced for MTV? At least the Dire Straits video has an excuse - it was produced in the early 1980s!
The Man Of Steel video / single is yet another mighty fine excuse for me to have a dig at the half-hearted approach by the record label over the entire CHSIB release.
I dont know, maybe some of you guys will love it? (different i suppose)... im just frustrated that i dont work for Meat because i wouldnt let them get away with treating my work in the way that they have treated CHSIB...
At least in the days of Virgin Records, there was attention to detail. You got the impression that at least someone cared.

I mean the real album sales charts, not all these crappy little charts like 'rock chart of new york on air play on computers' or whatever.
I personally believe Virgin did a damn good job, they may have wanted to cut songs, ect. but that is only to be expected. There is no doubt they promoted Meat to his biggest album.
By that I mean, it too Bat 2 sold something like 10 million in its first year alone and they promoted Meat to (no pun intended) hell and back. The years he was with them Meat was everywhere, he was a household name and a totally new generation got 'in' to meat...
This last one, well, it was never going to win over millions, its an album for the fans. If it was actually promoted, then it could have been a different story. Meat busted his arse on like 8 tv shows and a few radio stations, but they were none the 'kids' watch maybe Norton aside...
IF there is a Bat three, then Meat and Jimmy need to do like they did with bat 1... make the album themselves and then take it round the lables. Go back to roots and get someone who will ~~~~ing promote it. If the worst comes to the worst, and this might sound strange, but set up their own lable and hire the fans... I'm sure between them they have the money to do that...

Very well said... i agree with every word you say... and i reckon that the idea of Meat and Jimmy doing it themselves is the only way to go, simply because the entire music industry is rotten to the core and sold-out on manfactured pop trash.
Also, your idea of us (the fans!) getting involved in the promo work is a fantastic idea! It makes so much sense. We are passionate about the music and are willing to go out there on a limb to spread its magic. We would be the biggest, but the most economical promotional team (or army!) ever concieved!
All Meat and Jimmy would have to do is arm each of us with a few promo copies of the CD, a bundle of flyers, t-shirts and every other little piece of promotional merchandise imaginable - then watch the baby fly!
If you want a job doing right - you gotta do it yourself!! :)

well the video ain't a 10 out of 10, but i liked it. i wish they didn't edit the song. sure it could have been better, but its nice you know. i always wanted some kinda animation video of meats, and i got one. that is so cool. i would rate it 7\10.

I know this is irrelevant, but I'm trying to break into the music industry, and my style is music is heavily gothic / perhaps even 19th century Wagner and every song is 20 minutes. I truly believe that BAT III, if it's a success, could save my own arse - so I can fight against the pop trash and show the world that there is better music out there. If I make it into Idol - and that is my ultimate goal - the judges will be absolutely shocked with what they see: a truly ugly ~~~~~~~, but enthralling Mozartian operatic / rock epics. Look out, Britney Spears! I'm about to burst your crack right open !!

Actually Meat said Virgin were with AFL the same as Mercury with CHSIB, but he found out in time. Imo the main problem is that the whole music industry in the UK, not just the record companies, is so focused on what they have decided the young market want.
There were TV ads for the album, there were displays in shops .. but the biggest advertisement a new single or album can get is airtime, and sadly there were comparatively few radio stations who gave CHSIB much airtime, either because they decided their "market" wanted different music, or because they work to a playlist decided outwith the radio station, and the suits didn't include it.
In April we had posters, lists of radio stations etc .. but Meat said handing out leaflets in the street wouldn't do it, and we just couldn't get the airtime.

I couldn't agree more Caryl, the music industry is currently geared to the boy band and girlie culture of Pop Idol type shows.
The test for Bat III is how all of us can somehow break this mould.
Perhaps we ought to start a brainstorming session on the forum for ideas on how it can be promoted and try a few things out when the album is formally announced (hopefully in January).
There does appear to have been a slight movement away from the pop stuff to rock recently and while many of you don't like the Darkness and others you have to say it is significantly different from the predominant formulaic chart material. Maybe there's a real chance for Bat III.
Any ideas how we can promote it?

For CHSIB those of us who worked to promote it phoned radio stations, wrote to newspapers and magazines, put posters in cars, offices, shops, clubs, sent ecards to people etc. I'm not sure what else we can do. But I think the music business will probably have more interest in Bat3. The first 2 were runaway successes .. and that's what record companies are after .. if they beoieve it's likely to make them money perhaps they'll make more effort to get it on the radio playlists .. perhaps the suits who make them up will be more likely to include it. Because bottom line, it's airtime that gets sales racked up. As someone has already said, Meat's promise of press conferences to announce the album is coming seem intended to whip up more interest in advance.
Don't get me wrong, but frankly if Bat3's success is going to depend on the efforts of a few hundred fans to be the deciding factor in its success or not there's no hope at all in the music business .. none at all :(

I have said it all along, gonna take more than just a fan based promo push to give Meat the kick start he needs. Felt like I was part of a sinking ship dealing with all that. Kind of hard to help promote something with no "official" help at all. At least other fan sites I have worked on and currently work on are given "official" information from management way in advance to assist in helping stir up the excitement for the upcoming project. Meat's people tend to not give any of this without us having to totally harrass someone for some info.

I'm going to stick my 2 cents in here at this comment. I believe it was you who made some rather unkind remarks about my posts about the R & R charts. I'm not offended if not everyone pays attention to either the chart or my updates regarding it. I don't read everything that posts here on the boards either and I'm sure it doesn't bother anybody else that I don't. But the reason I posted the information is because the radio stations pay attention to them and a lot of them choose their music according to what other stations are playing. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of stations out there that have a mind of their own and break away from the pack to play something that nobody else is playing. And this can hurt an artist and/or their record sales. And as Caryl mentions, if the radio stations aren't playing the songs people don't know about them and they aren't likely to go out and buy the CDs. You may pooh pooh the charts that don't have anything to do with noteing record sales but they're more important than you think they are.
Now I'll go see if I can catch the video for MOS. I don't understand much in German and gave up trying to get to a couple of other things another time I went there.

Not sure what you mean by being part of a sinking ship. And I wasn't suggesting we should not do all we can to help promote any future album .. just that I think we did all we could before, and that to get to No1 needs more than what a few hundred of us can do. In the UK CHSIB did better than MOS imo because Meat was on radio and TV promoting it .. there was also a lot of energy on the part of fans in the forum doing what they could, which I think was helped by everyone coming on and sharing information, success stories etc. There seemed less concerted and continuous energy/enthusiasm about promoting CHSIB in the USA, and MOS in the UK. We did however have good notice of the UK release dates, and given we get notice of the release date for BAT3 I'd like to think there will be an enthusiastic push from UK fans in the forum.

That's a very good point .. particularly I would have thought in the US where there are so many radio stations. One of the problems here in the UK is that so many stations operate to playlists decided by a few regional offices of one main company. Luckily we do have a few DJs on Radio2 who will play Meat .. but the local BBC stations are not so helpful.
I still think that BAT3's best hope is that the avaricious record company(ies) releasing it will be mindful of the success of the previous BAT albums and see the potential for this final album if it's pitched and promoted right .. the key to success is airtime, and the key to airtime isn't in our hands. When BAT2 was released Virgin still owned Virgin radio didn't they? .. that must have helped. I know Mercury hand responsibility for turning the key to another company, and as far as I can see their efforts seemed to be limited to distributing copies to radio stations .. many of these have no say in what they play, and quite a few who do did not receive copies. It's at this point the wheels fall off the promo machine imo .. and as it's the record company, or someone to whom they subcontract this vital role who do this it's largely out of our hands. Which brings me full circle .. hoping that the record company see enough potential to be more proactive in trying to secure a position in playlists .. ie doing more than rustling up a few hundred padded envelopes and some stamps!! They might just as well send many of them straight to eBay and cut out the middle men!! Effective marketing needs to encompass more than mailshots .. but the suits who make up the playlists don't listen to us.
Remember where that copy of CHSIB went with my company? To the CLASSIC ROCK station not to the Adult Contemporary one!!! But then I wonder just who the envelope was addressed to now that I think of it. It was left in the classic rock studio. Even tho' it was then given to me I left it there with someone at the right station to play it so she could pass it on in hopes that the PD would actually do something with it. Unfortunately, he wouldn't have played it unless it was big on the R & R charts. What makes it worse is that he's not into the idea of playing Meat's music. I've heard the word "NO!" referred to before.
Selling the promo package on eBay? Me? Not on your life!
And just to clarify something ~ the R & R charts belong to a big radio industry publication that a major amount of stations not only subscribe to but report to.

This thread started with a question aboyt the MOS video. Have to say that when I saw it on the meatloaf.de website I thought it wasn;t my cup of tea .. andthe cartoon seemed rather crudely drawn. Having see it played on the screen at a concert .. that's what it was designed for! It came alive .. it was effective. And probably would have been if played in clubs ..

I have just seen the Man Of Steel video from a search on yahoo video's.This was an animation without Meat in (not that it bothers me so much!) but i have never seen such utter rubbish before, not the usual great vid from Meat.
Was this actually the official video for the single?
It's just my view but his video's seem to be getting more lacklustre!
DIST and CHSIB both were ok but i couldn't help feeling dissapointed.
I remember him saying once that he really enjoyed making music videos and this showed quite clearly in the videos for IWDAFL, I'd lie for you, not a dry eye and other vids before and upto these.
I really hope he comes up with better for Bat III.

Yes, this is the official video for Man of steel...I have seen it once - which was enough...
I think Meat must have been too busy to do a video, he was either touring, or not feeling well (been in hospital twice in 2003), and more artist have done a cartoon-video (Robbie Williams is one that comes to mind from that time).
And I do not know what costs more - but am guessing a cartoonvideo is cheaper, and do not think the record-company wanted to put a lot of money into singles-release from CHSIB...
I too hope the video's for BatIII will be better (mini-movies suit his music, I think...but being the optimist I am...I think they will be :D

Also I remember Meat saying in an interview or a comment he made, that record companies don't want to make expensive videos anymore, like those of AFL, R&R dreams and Lie For You, which cost a few million each.
I do hope though.. that the vids for Bat3 will be story types like the afore mentioned awesome vids, which suit Meat's music so well, like Mariella said.

I did buy the MOS single. I don't like the track, just bought it to help! it didn't work!! I do like the two live tracks that follow and listen to them quite often. I wish there were more legitimate live recordings.
MOS was the wrong single to launch on the UK at that time given Meat's situation. LUOL would have been much better in my opinion. Testify too.

DIST was really memorable live in 2003 and for all the right reasons, but like MOS I don't really enjoy the album version. Testify could have made a good UK christmas #1 ( maybe ) but Meat wasn't fit to promote it. Infact it still could at some stage.
I'm not a big fan of LUOL but i have to say i think Testify or even DISTwould have been great choices.

No, it wasn't, Ankie. Only in Germany. It reached #7, If I remember correctly.

I thought it was...i remember Meat coming on to a tv show here in the uk, 'this morning' and singing it! Im probably wrong! I liked man of steel, and somehow ended up with two copies of the single, if im honest though i think he could have released any of the songs off that album, it was fantastic!!

No it wasn't, COSIB and MOS were the only two. I heard alot of him on steve wright on radio 2 and he was on Richard and Judy, but he didn't sing. He talked about an attempted mugging on himself and JS, and the mugger didn't get Meats dimond ring. Something like that. He certainly didn't do as much TV as the listing promised,

The video was just bad, the song itself was good but it's just a pity that when there was so many other upbeat songs on the album that he didn't release testify or love you out loud instead.
As for the single, I like the edited version without the poem at the start, but Meat sounded very ill on the live songs, his voice was nowhere near as powerful.

But, I was overwhelmed with the way Meat performed this live, despite his obvious health problems during that tour, imo he managed to get so much emotion into that one song...it is one of my live-performances from that tour...these memories are stil treasured today!:D ...priceless...

I agree Mariella i didn't get the video either (i thought it was just me :roll: )
Any videos i've seen from the album MOS,DIST and CHSIB were all rubbish in my opinion not usual Meat Loaf quality at all. However as long as he blows me away with live performances i'm not really bothered with the rubbish video's i just think it's a shame cos he can't be happy with them :(

I agree his live performances are amazing but, good videos are needed to make the single work and you are right when you say the videos from CHSIB are all rubbish. This could be one of the reason they failed so much. Writing this just gave me a sudden rush of joy that the label is being sued. Huraaaaay!!!!
