Probably more video and pics of him at conventions, and/or appearances at the musical if it actually happens in the USA. Apart from that, the only musical stuff I can see him doing with his back the way it is would be stuff he can sing while sitting and not getting too intensely into it - maybe a different type of music?

I really hope he does more conventions - I saw him at London back in July and he seemed to thrive on it; the interaction with the fans, the love he was receiving, and being on stage (for his excellent talk) in front of an enraptured audience again. I know he was still in pain then, but I hope it did him well. It would be great to see the same again this year, if nothing else.

I would not expect much except continuing to recover from his back issues and enjoying a well-earned rest. Of course knowing how he is he may be bouncing (extremely gently) off the walls wanting to do something related to performing. Maybe some convention appearances should his back permit him to. I know at one time he was looking for the best versions of some of his oldest songs but not sure what for. I don't see a huge amount of buyers for it to be honest.
I would love to see someway, somehow, if all of the rights issues could be sorted that his Live VH1 shows could be issued on the best quality format it would work on.

I wonder if these reissues will actually come to fruition, and where the masters are taken from?
Personally, I'd like to see him do a concert where he just sits and sings! All the great ballads: FCOL, HCW, TOOT etc, etc. No theatrics, just Meat and his voice. It would be VERY different, but also very brilliant, in my humble opinion.

Good to see you here again Lisa. Yes that would be wonderful. I hope we will get to see that too. Phil collins has done something similar, and rather successfully I might add. He has drop-foot and can't stand for long or without a cane. As long as singing doesn't hurt Meat anymore, he should be able to do something like this. I'd just worry about him being able to get into physical shape. How do you work out when your back is so sore? Hopefully his physio covers that though!

Or, as it's otherwise known, Storytellers.
Funnily enough, Meat was actually considering a show like this a couple of years back, if memory serves.

Yeah I remember that too, but I kind of disagree on simplifying it that much. His back won't allow him to do another Storytellers type show. This would have to be an entirely different show that accommodates his physical disabilities and his likely-inability to exercise. Probably a slower pace, pitched-down songs, only singing what he can from a sitting position, and setting up the show so that it does not make his back condition worse - but still allow it to heal. But he could totally still tell stories, and use the same stage presence and ability to hold his audience to deliver a wonderfully immersive show to his fans. I think we would all like to see Meat do his thing in a capacity that is comfortable for him but still allows him to perform well. The question is - When Meat warms up and becomes Meat Loaf, can he contain the monster enough to stay in a chair and still let the character be Meat Loaf?
If all this is possible - then I think we definitely agree that we're basically talking about "Old Man Storytellers" :D
ThatWriterGuy
10 Jan 2019, 19:38
Well, yeah, I pretty much thought that was a given :-) I wasn't talking about an identical reproduction of the storytellers show from 1998. Just the core concept.

Good - and somewhat surprising - news. Both the Bat II and WTTN vinyl re-releases are double disc. Fingers crossed that it's a good master from an analogue source, and I'll be very happy with that indeed. Coming Feb.

There’s a clip from the convention, from before he took his tumble, where he says to a fan that he and jim think braver is the best thing they’ve done and they’re looking at doing an album which is the answer to Braver...

Interesting. I wouldn't rank "Braver" quite that highly. But the process they used to make it was probably the best for both of them with Jim not in the studio and Meat working with Paul and running stuff by Jim. It could obviously work again and most likely be cheaper to make to where it could be profitable enough. Jim still has some songs left so if Meat can sing without pain it sounds likely. Just bring back the big piano sound and some bombast.

It pains me to write it, but I don't understand why both Jim and Meat like that album so much. I don't get the praise the record got from Jim in the first place. But having said that, I really want to believe both of them mean it, and the initial praise by Jim was not just a tribute to a dear friend. If they both feel it and love it, then I am happy for them to extend that cooperation. And of course I am looking forward to it.

Really, how involved was Jim in the "Braver" album? A couple of lines on "Speaking in Tongues" that I'm aware of and what sounds like some emails and some feedback, which judging by the un-Jim like production was also minimal. Not slagging anyone, but Jim always has big piano and huge backing vocals. Honestly recent Avantasia sounds as Jim-esque as "Braver" did.
Unless we've misunderstood, Jim still has some songs left. One very prominently known, "body" and others mentioned "Last at Bat" and a couple others I can't recall at the moment. The songs they used on "Braver" were really old and I think they had to do production to what Meat could sing when it was recorded. I don't know if Meat's voice was different due to pain or age (or a combination of both) but he sounded great on HCTB and the tour for that album. Unless Cavallo "fixed" everything I'd settle for any vocal close to HCTB.

Oh wow, someone else here knows Avantasia! I still need to listen to the recent album but the one before, Ghostlights was fantastic, Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose was definitely Jim-like, which makes sense because Tobias did actually try to get Meat Loaf for it.

"Ghost in the Moon" is a 10 minute epic sort of like "Mystery of a Blood Red Rose" including a reference to it. "The Story Ain't Over" also delves into Jim territory. They aren't the lyrical masterpieces Jim writes, but the overall sound on those 3 songs is influenced heavily.
They tried to get Meat on "Mystery of a Blood Red Rose" but his management turned it down. Tobias is very open in discussing how Jim and Meat influences his music in several interviews.
If Jim were unavailable, I think the producers of those 3 songs could do a better job than Desmond Child did, but Desmond did a decent enough job for the most part.

I didn't know Jim/Meat was a big influence! I've not seen much in the way of interviews by Tobias. I do really like Avantasia, the line up of singers he gets is always good, and ehll he got amazing performances from Geoff Tate! He could have done something amazing with Meat.
Main reason I knew about the Meat Loaf thing is because I remembered a thing around the time Blood Red Rose came out with Tobias mentioning it but also Arjen Luccassen mentioned it once when I asked about getting Meat for a future Ayreon project!
It's a shame Meats management turned it down, makes me wonder if Meat himself knew about it.

RE Avantasia - I used to know Toby quite well circa 2005 (we'd arranged for exclusive rights of an edit of 'Superheroes' for a project that I was writer on at the time). We met in 2003 before Edguy were a known quantity on the rock circuit in the UK. If memory serves, Toby wrote another song intended for Meat that ended up being a B-side on a mid-2000's album, too (Story Ain't Over, I think).

Wow!
I instantly liked Ghost in The Moon. Great stuff.
Something like Mystery of a Blood Red Rose & The Story Ain't Over / Prize Fighter Lover (original version) / Date With Destiny would have formed an awesome basis for a Meat album.
I love bits of Braver, the title song is superb and like Souvenirs with the sax and Meat's voice is pretty good on that, but some stuff really should have been left off that album. Just because Steinman wrote certain songs doesn't make them automatically great in my opinion.
I'm sure there are many writers who could write in the style of Steinman / CHSIB / DIST / Blind As A Bat without having to go through the Sonnenberg management bollox.

My first Avantasia album was Wicked Symphony, that opening track is so so good, just the way all the singers gell with one another is sublime.
I honestly did think Braver was a good album, i can still listen to it now and enjoy it, but I do think it is lacking in a few areas. It does feel like it needs a little bit more of an edge to it.
Going All The Way is definitely in the top 10 of Meat songs for me though.

Overall, I like 'Braver'. I could do without the cringingly synthetic cartoonish background vocals, and 'Train of Love' never fit in for me - it's a cheery little pop song at the end of an increasingly dark and powerful symphony. But it certainly has strengths.

You could also add in "As If Tomorrow Will Never Come" by Katrina and the Nameless (Used to be "the Waves") it sounds a bit too much like a Jim clone wannabe with a definite "Dead Ringer" vibe. I actually made a list once for songs Meat could do that weren't Jim's. Avantasia still comes very close and has strong quality in their work, not quite a match for Jim lyrically but they have some really good songs, especially those 3.
Nice to see another Blue Tears fan.
I assume if Meat does another album he would want it to be Jim songs based on what he said on that Youtube video. If it is true Jim ain't happening
there probably won't be another album.

I'm not so sure it would be that different from "Braver" would it? All we have heard is that Jim played some part. I have felt it must have been somewhat minimal, they usually said things to the effect of "involved" and he let them put his name on it and his likeness on the cover (although most people probably had no idea that was Jim except us obsessives).
Meat seemed to have the idea in mind to do another. That is why I kind of brought up Tobias' work. It is quality stuff and he gets what Jim does.

He had health problems before "Braver" may have had more issues since. But again I seriously doubt his involvement in "Braver" was all that much. He didn't really do much publicly when his dream of the "Bat" musical was realized.
Neither Meat nor Jim is in great health so it would be something they need to move upon if they really want to get it done. I think it is doubtful. In my dream at least Jim gives his okay for songs and Meat produces with Tobias if at all possible, or maybe Paul again.
would love to hear the vocal sound they managed to get on hctb or chsib
loud and crisp and clear. Cavallo got some spectacular vocals from him, and peter mokran on chsib also got great ones. As far as i remember he did the vocals for the melbourne show which sound outstanding
