View Full Version : My Meat Loaf Story(Not about meeting him)

One Last Trip
19 Aug 2003, 01:00
Bat out of Hell 2 came out in 1993, I was 6 at the time, and I heard some of the album. I thought it was good but as the years went by I lost interest and forgot about it.

A few months ago, I woke up with a text message from one of my friends, and it was lyrics from NADEITH, but I had no idea at the time because I hadn't heard that song before.

So anyway, I met my friends at the bus stop to go to school and a couple of them had got messages as well. One was the same as mine but another was Took The Words... Bat 2 being the only Meat Loaf album I had ever heard I didn't think anything of it and we all wondered just what the hell these messages meant. The person who sent the messages wasn't at school that day so we didn't get an answer. When we finally saw him, he told us they were Meat Loaf lyrics.

When I got home, I downloaded Took The Words... and when I heard I loved it instantly. After that, I got a couple more songs and loved them too. I didn't think anything of it for a few of weeks until I saw an advert for the new album, and I decided that I was going to buy it.

This was only about 4 or 5 weeks ago now so the next part shows how obsessed I have got.
I went into a music shop with £30 and came out £28 poorer but with 3 Meat Loaf albums. I had bought Bat 2, CHSIB, and The Best Of. I listened to them all one after the other and didn't skip through any song out of boredom, something which I find very difficult to do with CDs these days. I deleted the songs I now had on CD from my computer(I really do just download songs to sample) and I then ordered Bat 1 25th Anniversary Edition from the internet.

It arrived shortly after and I put it on, not realising before that BOOH actually lasted a lot longer than the version I had heard. The next song came on and it was Took The Words, and again I loved hearing it.
I then started listening to Meat Loaf and nothing else. I had on the CDs whenever I was on the computer or if there was nothing on TV.

I got a job around this time, so that gave me more money to spend on stuff, so I decided to get more ML CDs.
I didn't get any more of them for a few weeks though, because I couldn't find them anywhere that I looked. I eventually found them in HMV, and I bought Welcome To The Neighbourhood and Midnight At The Lost And Found. I wasn't too sure about WTTN to begin with, but as the first song got 'started' if you will I didn't stop it at all. I loved the entire thing, and then I put in MATLAF. It's a good enough album, but out of all the ML albums I have got this is the one I would listen to last.

Anyway, a few days ago I went into town again and I got Live Around The World, which I think is brilliant, and I also got Dead Ringer.
After watching To Hell And Back(the Meat Loaf VH1 night was on not long after I started buying all the CDs) I thought that the 2nd Steinman project was cancelled, and that he had nothing to do with Dead Ringer. Obviously I was wrong and I loved this whole album as well. Peel Out being one of my favourites from it.
It's that song that confused me really, because of what happened on the film. We saw Meat having problems singing this song and that nothing else was really mentioned about it, or any of the 80s albums really. Can anyone explain this? It would be appreciated.

Anyway, that brings me to tonight where I decided I would tell everyone the story of how one drunken friend got me back into Meat Loaf.

If ML reads this, I would just like to say thank you for the hours of enjoyment you have given me from listening to your music, even though I have just recently got into it.

If you didn't scroll down half way through this post, thanks for reading it.

Cheers

Thanks for the story! I always love to hear people's stories about how they got into Meat Loaf.

For me, it wasn't anything unusual. I'd just heard "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad", "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" and "Rock and Roll Dreams" on the radio and loved them. Earlier I had heard OF Meat Loaf but just hadn't taken much notice. My only income at the time was pocket money from my parents, so in 1997 I scraped enough money together to buy BOOH. At first I listened only to the two BOOH tracks I mentioned above. Initially I was a ballad person but rock songs grew on me a lot when I heard BOOH. I remember thinking it was sooo long and I didn't understand very much of Steinman's complex lyrics.

A few months later I bought BOOH 2, and then the other albums as financial circumstances permitted. Then when I first got access to the internet, I went looking for Meaty websites and found a big Meat Loaf community. I joined a list and read message boards but was a lurker for quite a while at first. It was then I discovered that Meat is an actor. The first of his movies I saw was Leap Of Faith.

On both 1 January 2000 and 1 January 2001 I was listening to BOOH as midnight struck in NZ. As NZ is among the first countries in the world to experience the new day, I like to imagine that I was the first person in the world to listen to Meat in the new millenium.

There are a few differing viewpoints on the film. My opinion is that it is suitable for entertainment (I'm not saying that it is entertaining to see `Meat' endure the harships he suffered that were depicted in the film), but it contains many inaccuracies. I don't mind omissions that much if they don't mislead, but I hate inaccuracies (perhaps due to the writers taking artistic licence). But perhaps that is the problem with any biopic and perhaps I'm just being defensive about a person of whom I'm a big fan. If you really want to learn the story of Meat's life, the best thing to do is to buy his biography of the same name. It goes into much more detail about his life pre-BOOH and in the 80s, and/or you could ask any of us, I'm sure everyone here is willing to help.

Great story .. thanks for sharing it with everybody !

I didn't get hooked on Meat's music until 1999, when I first heard him sing Paradise By The Dashboard Light on the Storytellers CD :)

It's kind of a funny story really ...
I happened to be in the local record store one night, buying the lastest Weird Al Yankovic album (for those of you who don't know who Weird Al is, let's just he's very hard to describe ..

Anyway, I saw the Storyteller's CD sitting on the shelf ... and bought it.
Don't ask me why .. I had heard Meat's name before, but had never listened to any of his music. Call it fate perhaps .. but for some reason I just had to have it :)) I listened to it in the car on the way home, and loved every second of it !

I listened to the CD constantly ... but what really got me hooked was watching Storytellers on VH1. I was so engrossed in it that I actually jumped up and yelled at the tv when they were singing Paradise and he said "stay tuned for the 2nd half of this story after these commercial messages" :lmao:

I bought the Storytellers DVD as soon as it came out, read his autobiography and went back and bought every Meat Loaf CD I could get my hands on.

I enjoy all of his music, but certain songs will always have a place in my heart :

(1) Paradise - because watching Meat & Patti sing it on Storytellers got me hooked on his music

(2) Rock N' Roll Dreams Come Through & I'd Lie For You And That's The Trurh - because I can still remember how incredible it was seeing him sing them live for the very first time in Atlantic City (September 2001)

(3) Did I Say That - in my mind all of the songs on CHSIB are perfect in their own way. But this is the first song I heard from the new album, and the level of emotion he brings to it is absolutely incredible.

So if you read this Meat -- I guess I just want to say thank you for doing Storytellers :) Thank you for opening up a new world for me, allowing me to meet some incredible people and have a lot of fun along the way.
And thank you most of all for all of the incredible music ... especially
the new and exciting CHSIB CD !!

Those are wonderful stories :D

I was 7 when BOOH first came out and I loved it instantly. I drove my poor Mother crazy until she bought it for me (on vinyl!!) Never did I think that hearing that one album would start a life long obsession with ML music :!: I have since passed on the tradition to my daughter. She was born a couple of months after BOOHII came out. I played it constantly when I was pregnant. After she was born, she became colic. One night I was at my wits end and I put on BOOHII. She fell fast asleep during I'd Do Anything For Love. That was the end of the colic!! Her favorite album is WTTN. She just loves "Where the Rubber Meets the Road" and now she is driving me crazy waiting for the CHSIB release.
I guess it's my fault. I started it :!:

Vicki, didn't Meat approach you at a concert during Paradise and say something to you while you were at a concert (or perhaps it was another song or person), before Patti took him away again?

Yes it was me Shane .... how could I forget that one :))
I was the other woman in Paradise !!

It was last September. Caryl, Sue (aka tink) and I went to Meat's concert at the New Brunswick State Theater in New Jersey. tink was sitting in the 3rd row center --- next to Paul Crook I might add (lucky lady!) --- while Caryl and I were sitting in the front row next to the stage on the right hand side.

Meat and Patti went over to the left hand side of the stage, and started to do the makeout scene. When Patti pretended to brush him off, he started walking across the stage ... I knew he was coming my way, so I wanted to be ready for him :) I jumped up .. and when Meat saw me standing there, pointed and said "that one wants me!" He stood right in front of me with the biggest grin on his face, pointed, lifted his shirt slightly, started shaking his hips and dancing, and motioned for me to come up on stage :) I pointed at him, said "I'll take you!", stood there shaking my hips and dancing, and motioned for him to come down to me :lmao:

Then after a few brief moments, sadly it was all over ... Patti came over, saw what we were doing, and dragged him back to the other side of the stage to finish the song :) I can still see the look on her face .. absolutely hysterical !!! I think we had the entire band laughing that night ..

Definitely a night I'll never forget :)) Thanks for reminding me to share it with everyone Shane !!

And a very big THANK YOU MEAT for a night I'll never forget :))

Fantastic stories! Escpecially Vickip's

It was my brother who introduced me to Meat Loaf. I remeber he came back from uni and I was skimming through the Cds he had bought while he was away. I saw the back of one Cd with a black and white picture of a man dressed in a suit and looking serious. I thought 'what is this? an opera cd?' I turned it over and got a shock when I saw the front cover. The Cd was The Very Best of Meat Loaf, I'll presume most of you know what the cover looks like. I asked my brother 'what is this?' I had heard the name Meat Loaf before but never heard anything of his. Anyway my brother played me BOOH. The intro alone was amazing and by the end of the song I was curious to find out what else he had done. My brother being older and having more money than me bought more Meat Cds and we both played them ad nauseam (it's a figure of speech, I'm not saying you could get sick of Meat Loaf). And that was the start of what I think will be my life long obsession.

Great stories, and it is great that so many new generations are meat fans.
Indeed my daughter came with me last year to his concert, and shortly
after she won his signed book on ROL fan site.
This year my eldest two will be coming to his concerts to say thankyou
and good bye, for all the great times that he has given them.
Because meats music is so timeless, I hope we can safely say his
music will inspire many more generations of meat fans.

I've met Meat twice and each time found him to be quiet, gentle, charming, quick witted and full of humour. The first time I had great fun talking him through a yearbook of ROL and making him laugh. And when I said it had cost me $700 to get to this concert and for that I was rather hoping for sex .. but I'd settle for a hug .. he stopped in his tracks for a second, then took a dollar bill from his pocket and gave it to me saying $699 always sounds better than $700. But I think my most treasured moment was last year's Summer tour, when we weren't able to meet him, but had given John the next yearbook to give to him. Sitting in the front row of his final concert that leg a few days later, he was crouched down right in front of me, eyes tight shut and in the zone as he always is when singing .. and suddenly popped right out of "character" .. gave me a wink and a big grin and shook his finger at me .. and then as quickly slipped back into character and the song. It was just a few seconds .. but he recognised me, it was personal and magic :)

And now I realise who you are Bigmomma :)) .. I thought it might be you. Nice to see you here .. and thanks :)

Caryl and Vicki I know what you feel!

On Night of the proms 2001 in Bremen (City in Germany) MEAT comes after the show with two flower-bouquets on stage. He stood right in front of me with the biggest grin on his face and warp a bouquet to me with a eye-wink!
It was VERY personal and the flowers (arid) are in my home and the grin and the eye-wink in my heart FOREVER! :P
