View Full Version : A brief note from Kelseyville...

Hi again, friends. Thank you for all your very kind responses to my last posting. It’s wonderful to be able to stay in touch, at least, minimally, like this.
You will have to forgive a VERY brief synopsis of Kelseyville this evening. After a harrowing journey here, through torrential downpours in the Sierra mountains, we have had have had less than one hour of sleep in the past 36 hours and tomorrow, we have a 10 hour drive to get to the next venue location from here, which is Lancaster, CA, in, once again, the Southern part of the state. So, to say we are tired does not begin to cover it….
Here is the main news from this concert and I hope to write another post about this one in a day or so. I have some things I would very much like to discuss with all of you and some questions/opinions I would like to ask/get.
By the way, sorry, for the confusion, Sherrie. The readerboard right now is telling everyone about the coming album and single. It tells some pretty bad jokes. (What do you call a guitarist with no girlfriend? Homeless!) Gives famous birthdays. Indicates (and changes at every concert) where the show is being held…
And the message seems to be changing at every concert, as well. Today’s development: CHSIB is now said to be released in the States “around the middle of September.” So, apparently, the 23rd date they were saying before could not be finalized. The rest of the message stayed pretty much the same. The single is still being said to be sent out to radio stations “around August 15th.”
The concert was again shortened--this time by one song. I think I have mentioned in the past that Love You OutLoud had some problems. I guess Meat felt the same way, as they did not play it this evening. That made me sad, as it is my second favorite song on the new album, but perhaps, they are continuing to work on it and it will return later in the tour.
Here, finally, is the current playlist (as of tonight):
Wasted Youth
Do it!
Life is a Lemon
Dead Ringer
All Revved Up
Anything for Love
Testify
Couldn’t Have Said it Better
Two Out of Three
Out of the Frying Pan
Paradise
Bat
Back in the USA
The concert was about 111 minutes long tonight. Don’t know why it was shortened. But it could be that the audience did not deserve more. And this will be my main topic of discussion when I write a little later. Whereas I described Reno as being the best concert I have ever been to in my life, I would describe Kelseyville as being the worst. But not because of Meat and the band or because of Cyndi and her portion of the show. But purely and simply because of the audience.
(Of course, I realize that other people may have had an entirely different experience at the same show. I think that a lot of it may have to do with where you were sitting and who your neighbors were. I’ll certainly be interested in hearing what anyone else has to say about this particular show.)
But I really do have to leave this here and go get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a very long day of driving and some of you know that I am not a very good traveler. So, please forgive me. I really do HAVE to talk with you about some things that happened to see how you feel about them and what your experiences have been along these lines. So, I will try to put that together as soon as I can.
I hope everyone is well!! Take good care.
More soon.
Much love,
MB

ps. Tonight the first bra of the tour made its way onto the stage. Eventually, Meat took the lacy black lingerie and hung it from the mike stand....

Thanks again MB, was Tear Me Down performed?
...what is a readerboard?...
tink...
Thanks once again MB for filling us in on the shows. It's sad to read the good vibe wasn't at this last show. Hopefully the next one will have a better feeling to it. Can't wait to read more about your trip!
Tink, a readerboard, or changeable messageboard (as we call them at work) is a scrolling sign about 6 feet long and 1 foot high with red letters that scroll across. I work for the Illinois Department of Transportation and we use this technology to warn mortorists of impending problems on the highway. They have a little different size and shape on the roads, but it's the same idea. The message is changed via a computer link.

MB,
Thanks for updating us, even after your rather harrowing trip! Goodness, the one time I had that little amount of sleep I ended up hallucinating, speaking to people that were not even there. Hopefully you handle it better than I did! (Though an ML hallucination might not be all bad! ) Please make sure you keep some notes of things you want to talk about- I don't want to miss a thing!
Sherrie

Yes, thanks MB :)
And I was wondering the same thing ChrisNI .... I'm thrilled to see that he did Dead Ringer again (it gives me hope that he'll do it at the shows I'm going to in September), but I'm surprised he'd skip Tear Me Down.
Hopefully he was just having some minor difficulties with Love You Out Loud and they'll be bringing it back again.

im unsure about tear me down Vickki, MB said in her post the only change was LYOL being left out so therefore i think MB just forgot to put it on her setlist post.

I'm sure you're right Chris .... she probably just forgot to include it :)

Hi MB.
Just out of curiousity .. do you mean technical problems? And if so, what type of technical problems ..... sound, etc? Or do you simply mean there was a problem with the way the crowd reacted to the song? Please elaborate on this when you get a chance to post again :) I love the song, and it's one that I'm really looking forward to the chance to see him perform live.

I wasn't at the show, so obviously I can't comment on the reaction of this particular audience. But it sounds like there are 2 problems (if you can call them that) here :
(1) Having Cyndi Lauper instead of Kasim opening for Meat ---
Nothing against Cyndi personally .... I've never seen her perform live, and from what I've heard, she puts on a great show. But as has been the case with some of the other shows during the tour, a lot of the fans were there just to see her ..... so they just walked out when she was finished, or if they stayed, they weren't willing to give Meat's music a chance. Also, they have a limited amount of time on stage ..... so if Cyndi's show runs over, it's going to take time away from Meat and his performance. We ran into a similar situation last year when Meat and Dennis DeYoung shared the bill at the Allentown State Fair.
Has anyone been to a show on this tour where Kasim has opened for Meat? I would be curious to know if this has had any affect on the audience. I'm going to 2 shows in September ... Mohegan Sun, where Cyndi opens for Meat, and The Borgata, where Kasim opens for Meat. It'll be interesting to see if this has an effect on the audience :)
(2). Don't forget that the cd hasn't been released here in the US yet. And from what I've seen and heard, there has been very little promotion for it ...... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will change when he appears on GMA in a couple of weeks (August 15th) or when the single is finally released. It must be so difficult for Meat to try to sing and promote the new songs when most of the people haven't heard of them yet :?

Hi, guys! Just got in to Lancaster a little while ago, after a VERY long drive today and only 4 hours more sleep than I could write about yesterday. So, once again, please forgive this brief note, when there is much I'd like to say.
First of all, my apologies for leaving out Tear Me Down. Yep, that's what sleep deprivation does to you!
I've got to dig out my notes, but I believe TMD came after Lemon. So sorry not to have been accurate. Thanks to Chris and Vicki for spotting it. As for Love You OutLoud, Vicki: No, there were no technical problems. As much as I love that song, it just didn't sound good live. I'm sure they must be working on it and hopefully, it will appear later in the tour. It's such a great song and Meat told us that the band loves it, too. So, here's hoping.
I just don't have the strength right now to get into the whole audience thing, Vicki. Maybe later tonight. It had nothing to do with Cyndi this time, or her fans. She was as much a victim of the audience here as Meat was, actually, as were those of us in the audience who were there to listen to both performances. We were certainly victims, too.
Don't be afraid of Meat not giving 100% of his show, Vicki, when Cyndi is with him. She normally does about 75 minutes--give or take a few--and Meat is now, apparentlly, trying to keep his portion around 2 hours. You will get it all at both venues.
Both Lancaster tomorrow night and Anaheim the following night will be opened by Kasim (I hope) and I will let you know if there are any changes that take place.
But I've become a big fan of Cyndi Lauper's now, after having seen her in 4 of these concerts. She puts on an amazing show!! I didn't expect to feel this way but I do.
Anyway, time to try to get a little sleep here. But I will write more about what happened in Kelseyville either later tonight (if I wake up) or early tomorrow. And I look forward to hearing everyone else's feelings and experiences on this sort of thing, as well.
Again, my apologies for the missing song.
Much love to all,
MB

Hi MB
You're welcome :) And please, don't apologize. I thought you probably just missed it by mistake :)
Interesting ... I thought I read in reviews that other people thought it sounded great. Wasn't it Kasim who said in his on-line chat that the band really wanted to do it, but Meat was a little apprehensive? Hopefully they'll work on it and try it again before September. But if not, I would be just as happy if they replaced it with my personal favorite .. Did I Say That. Hint Hint Hint Fireball

Oh ok .. that's a shame :( I'm sorry to hear that. Actually I read a very nice review of one of Meat's shows on Cyndi Lauper's website tonight .. the young man went mainly to see Cyndi, but decided to stay for Meat's performance because he actually felt bad that so many people were leaving. Then he ended up enjoying Meat's show too :)

I'm not afraid .. I know he always give more than 100% :)) Believe me, I'm really looking forward to seeing both of them. Thanks for the information .. I don't know where I got the idea that she was on for over 2 hours ! And I can understand why he had to cut his back .. he's got a long rigourous tour ahead of him ... and we don't want him to get worn out now :)
Great .. please let us know how it goes :)
Thanks again for the information and I really hope you enjoy the shows !!

hello,
i was at the kelseyville show & had a great time. i do remember him doing "tear me down" i noticed it cuz last year when he did that song there, Patti & Pearl came out with kinda like cue cards_reminded of an old Bob Dylan video..haha- & this year that wasn't in the show. i was really close so i didn't notice people leaving. I did laugh as my girlfriend & i were singing the new songs & a lot of people were looking @ us strangely. From the preformance Meat gave, physically, you'd never know he was sick but after the show he was very wiped out. Very much so that he cancelled his next 2 shows. When we spoke to Paul (guitar player) he thought it was just going to be the next show.
It is too bad to see that "love you out loud" was cut but he did my fav's from the new cd!!
looking forward to seeing him again..& again. it's his last "world tour" so that doesn't mean he won't do smaller tours!!

Meat has said that he might do just a few concerts in a few cities when Bat 3 is released. After that, he has said that he'll focus on acting, but he might do the occasional charity event.
Pearl is no longer with the band. The person you saw with Patti was probably Renee Cologne, a new band member.
