View Full Version : What happened to the Christmas album?
He first mentioned it a couple of years ago now. Don't know if it has been mentioned in another thread but I thought it would be out by 2013 at the latest. Anyone?
Good question , it has not been mentioned in about a year or so now. I hope it happens someday
He spoke about it on his FB page a few weeks back. Next will be Brave and Crazy autumn 2014 .. he said then that he had a Christmas album lined up .. but that it would be his last album. So I'm in no rush for it ;)
Couldn't Have Said It Better was to be his last album...we have had two final tours....

We had a last world tour .. then we had Last at Bat .. the title Meat has for many years associated with finale.
Dave .. I'm simply answering a question with what Meat has said. We are several years on from CHSIB, and Meat has imo repeatedly made it very clear he is done with touring, particularly now he has established a viable alternative in a residency; done with the stress and strain of packing/unpacking, travelling from place to place, and dealing with promoters who are reluctant to back what they consider to be short tours of less than 30+ shows.
As far as the Christmas album is concerned, that is what he said .. which wouldn't necessarily mean that we can expect Brave and Crazy followed by Happy Holidays and no more .. it could just mean that he sees the latter as one he will finish on. I certainly hope so ;)
But I want to see him around, doing what he loves to do, for a long time yet .. so much as I shall miss the touring, I'd rather he didn't kill himself on the road. He has looked so much happier and less tired throughout the Vegas residency, I think he has found the answer to continuing his career as a live performer :-)

I think I would rather see Meat go out on a high note, like a monster hit. To me a Christmas album is not the way I want to see Meat end his career. But it's his call.
I see where you're coming from .. though I can't see Meat releasing an album of Jingle Bells and crooning Cliff Richardesque Mistletoe and Wine ;) I can't see it being anything like a traditional Christmas album. Much as personally for years I have longed for a full album of Meat singing carols and traditional Christmas songs, including Fairytale in New York and Oh Holy Night .. I don't think this will be it.
But as you say .. it's his call how he ends the recording element of his career :-)
Thanks Caryl, missed that FB post!!! Well I would love to hear Meat do a xmas album. I think some new songs will be on it for sure, but there will be traditional ones I'm sure aswell. You gotta sell it at the end of the day, IMO = brave and crazy, xmas album, and then a monster greatest hits release. I reckon it will go in this order, sounds great to me
I'm not that fussed about yet another compilation of hits .. and should the Christmas album have to wait because Meat finds he has more he wants to record after Brave & Crazy, I'd be a very happy bunny ;)
I think an official release like say the very best of is fine, maybe a new song or 2 on it, the hits collections are what sell so I can see it happening in the next 3 years. An xmas album will be good fun, of course if meat wants another studio album after brave and crazy, hey that's a huge bonus, I was just thinking out loud how I think it will pan out etc etc,,
I'd like both, B&C and the Christmas album.
I have ALSO always wanted a spiritual /religious album. So many of his songs are of a spiritual nature , would be great to put them altogether and maybe add a few religious /spiritual classics.
and by spiritual, well, I consider The Weight , The night they drove Ole Dixie down, and he ain't heavy he's my brother to be spiritual. . On some days I consider "Brother Love's traveling salvation show" ( Neil Diamond to be Very spiritual. Also, I love Tom T Hall's song from long ago " More about John Henry" to be spiritual.
Can't you just hear Meat singing the beautiful Christmas classics?

I don't mind those songs, but if he ever put out a Christian album I would be horrified beyond belief.
It's an aspect about him that I conveniently overlook.
A Christmas or Holiday album would be great. I can just hear him singing Ave Maria and Do you Hear What I Hear? Blue Christmas?
There are many secular songs that are spiritual in nature. Should be easy.

Would you like him to wear a knitted cardigan too? Meat Loaf is about balls-out rock songs and amazing power ballads. Flaming guitars and exploding pianos. Thunderous tidal waves and bombastic rollercoasters.
You seem to want turn him into Cliff Richard. :yikes:

...whilst gently serenading us from his rocking chair.

He's recorded Sorrento, Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Somebody Loves me, Let It Be, Forever Young .. sung Silent Night beautifully on TV, and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire .. and brought tears to people's eyes with his rendering of the USA national anthem. Not every ballad he's recorded on his albums could be described as power ballads, (from Martha to Have You Ever Loved Somebody .. and I wouldn't describe the beautiful Heaven Can Wait as one either.
None of this has diminished him in any way nor brought him anywhere near Cliff Richard, nor a knitted cardigan or rocking chair.
Breeze .. I'd be happy to hear him sing any of the songs you've mentioned :-)
A meat loaf xmas album will rock!!! He's mature voice now is ready made for some husky renditions of xmas carols!! Plus marketed right it will sell nice every year, and imagine driving the car at xmas time and meat belting out ur fav festive tunes!!! Meat is not just a rocker, he's everything u want him to be, he has learned to evolve he's music without selling out IMO.
holy and choir, Meat has sung with Pavarotti He has an operatic voice. There many powerful holiday and spiritual songs .
Can't imagine why anyone would associate Holiday music with a rocking chair.
So many of his songs are already spiritual in nature
Is nothing Sacred?
No Matter What
Objects
Heaven Can Wait
Where Angels Sing
Original Sin
It just won't quit
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
Cry over me
Alive
If this is the last kiss
The duets AFL, ACBTMN, TFAWIUTB
These are just the ones I can think of quickly. There are many more.
I have always felt many of his songs are spiritual in nature. Not religious per say, but of a spiritual nature.

I'm SHOCKED that I got so many 'likes' and not one dislike with this comment. I was expecting some heat.

I generally associate spiritual with something of a religious nature, but I dig what you're saying.
However, I wouldn't call some of those songs 'spiritual' even in that sense. Original Sin? Lol.
ll be honest. I don't care if we get a whole christmas album,
But what about a seven minute version of Run Run Rudolph with a two minute sax solo by Dave, a guitar duel, a drum solo, and a piano break as an EP or something. That'd be mad sick....

To be honest I didn't notice the second line in your original post, but now you've drawn attention to it ..
One's belief systems are intensely personal and I see no point in arguing them, particularly with people I don't know and on internet forums. However, I would never feel the need to overlook Meat's. They are an integral part of who he is, how he is, and probably contributed the strength to keep fighting on his road of rabbit holes and obstructions ;) .. so if anything I am thankful for them.

I think the point the naysayers are making is it's another blooming xmas album by another artist, albeit someone rather special to us.
Xmas compilations have been flogged to death and as grand a performance Meat will undoubtedly give it will just be Meat's drop in an already saturated slosh of santa songs.
And imagine the long drive to the beach for your summer hols.
"Love, what shall we listen to on the way? AC/DC or Guns and Roses?"
"No darling, can we have Meat's Mulled Wine Classics"

So not knitted cardies and rocking chairs then? ;) And I disagree anyway as I said, that Meat is solely about rock and power ballads.

Or we could wait and see what he does? He could surprise the naysayers and produce an almighty splash! ;) I'd have thought many Meat fans would love to have a really great album of songs related to Christmas. I am certainly one of them.

Not sure I'd think any album of Christmas songs would be ideal for a drive to the beach in summer .. but at Christmas ..
"What shall we pop into the CD player .. Cliff Richards or Simon Cowell's latest X Factor money spinning assault on the Christmas charts?"
"Gimme a break!! We have Meat rocking out this Christmas! Shove the sod in the slot and let's hear something Christmassy yet surprising that's really worth listening to!"

But if a Crimbo album requires the same amount of effort as a regular album (which I assume it would) then I'd rather that effort produces something I can listen to all year round.

I am excited to see what Meat does for a Christmas album. Especially, after I heard that he is working on a duet with Garth and one with Reba (crossing my fingers that those songs do work out). I think it could turn out to be a really interesting album. I don't think Meat is going to come out and do a Christmas album that doesn't have an undertone of rock and roll throughout. Then again who knows. He may surprise us all and the album have nothing to do with rock and roll. Either way, the Bat out of Hell man doing a Christmas album has my interests peaked!!!

How's that any different from the rest of the year?
I'm not a Christmassy person, I'm not into Christmas albums and certainly wouldn't be planning on buying one under normal circumstances. However, I'm curious to see what Meat is going to do with the theme of Christmas so I'll buy it when it comes out, try to listen to it with an open mind and who knows? I might actually enjoy it. ;)
I would enjoy seeing sort of a combo Christmas /spiritual/gospel/ folklore etc type album. I also think Wario's suggestion about Run Run Rudolph is great.
I really want to thank this group for sharing the Christmas song " Fairytale in New York". I really think the Pogues are amazing and that song has just gotten into my head and won't leave. I can't believe it has been out so long and I'd never heard it.
We miss a lot in the states. I even have a hard time finding DVD's of Tim Minchin that I can play here -- not region compatible. Mostly you just have to download his stuff or watch on utube. His Christmas song, out for a while now, " White wine in the sun" is so perfect. He's not religious, he just really likes Christmas. Lovely , just perfect. I just think he is a genius. :D
