View Full Version : The Very Best of Meat Loaf Part 2: Return of the Killer Meat Loaf

Well it's been (unbelievably) 14 years since the "Very Best Of" came out and I've been listening to it recently; as a whole for the first time since then and it's been an interesting experience. One track that leaps out by its absence (for me anyway) is I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us, but I've gained a new appreciation for Is Nothing Sacred? and Home By Now/No Matter What. (A Kiss is a Terrible Thing To Waste has been one of my favourite Meat Loaf songs since I first heard it, trembling under the duvet in 1998...)

But since then we've had 4 more studio albums to chew over aurally, and I'm wondering what others think would make a good double album of 'Best Ofs' (either CD (144mins) or Vinyl (90mins)* will be fine, hehe :D) in light of Couldn't Have Said It Better, The Monster Is Loose, Hang Cool Teddy Bear, Hell In A Handbasket.

*Or Tape if you're feeling really brave...

he hasnt had any really big hits sans maybe IACBTMN, and thats a stretch, since 1998s VBO set.

Id like more live stuff to come out rather then a compilation

This would truly be a 'Best Of' collection and not a greatest hits package like the first one mostly was. This would not sell very well if released IMO. I guess if they made it an iTunes only download it would't really matter.

It would have to be ONE CD.

1) Couldn't have said it better
2) Man Of Steel
3) Did I say that?
4) Blind As A Bat
5) IACBTMN (as much as I hate it)
6) TFAWIUTB
7) Land Of The Pigs
8) Alive
9) Bad For Good
10) Los Angeloser
11) Like A Rose
12) California Ain't
13) The Giving Tree
14) All Of Me
15) California Dreamin

I think it would be good if the next "very best of" is comprised of live tracks, preferably previously unreleased ones

If meat were to make a CD comprised of songs post WTTN:

CHSIB
Testify
IACBTMN
BAAB
Pigs
Break It
POE
LOTO
Los Angeloser
Giving Tree
Mad Mad World
OL&OS
Stand in the Storm
All of Me (live)
Bible and a Beer (live)

I guess the only songs which are on the last four albums but which could find their way on to a greatest hits album (imo) would be:

Its All Coming Back To Me Now
In The Land Of The Pig The Butcher Is King
The Future Ain't What It Used To Be
Los Angeloser

and these would (possibly) replace:

Modern Girl
Midnight At The Lost & Found
I'd Lie For You
Not A Dry Eye In The House

but sadly overlooked in the first instance were:

It Just Won't Quit
For Crying Out Loud
All Revved Up
Read Em & Weep

Anyone else ?

I'm with Wario. It's fun to do as a hypothetical but an actual greatest hits package 2002-2012 would be pointless.

I would like to see a release of rarities, unreleased tracks or more live tracks. For instance an official release of one of LBAGG tour from 1988 would be wonderful. Maybe an audio only release of the Original BOOH tour?

How about the best takes of the album that would have become 'Renegade Angel'. :O

...What Part Of My Body Hurts The Most...Dance In My Pants...Its All Coming Back To Me Now (Live)...

Hell yes, wouldnt be my preference, and just out of sheer curiousity, why live It's All Coming Back To Me Now? Weird choice, considering Meat's vocals troubles at the times it was in the setlist :O

This needs some big names mixed in and maybe a few new ones if it was to actually be a possibility, but my take on it:

Disk 1:
1. Bad for Good
2. Fall From Grace
3. Los Angeloser
4. Peace on Earth
5. Couldn't Have Said It Better
6. What About Love?
7. Song of Madness
8. Break It
9. The Future Ain't What It Used to Be

Disk 2:
1. Testify
2. Living on the Outside
3. Did I Say That?
4. The Giving Tree
5. In the Land of the Pig, the Butcher is King
6. Boneyard
7. Prize Fight Lover
8. It's All Coming Back to Me Now
9. Elvis in Vegas

It wouldn't sell anything, considering not one of these eighteen were a hit...I still reckon it's a ~~~~ing awesome collection of songs, though. Better than most artists could hope for :P

Also considered Blind as a Bat and Blue Sky, but I liked the flow of these.

I would choose Its all coming back to me live cause that would be the most tolerable version of the song by hard core meatloaf fans. They have been some pretty well done live versions.

Do you mean that as in it was better live than in the studio? Because it wasn't all that different, was it? :O You're right in that it was done quite good live, too. At least a few times. The version from Royal Albert Hall from 2006 was on YouTube a while back, and that was just awesome (as was the entire show). There's definitely some good ones out there :-)

I just think the studio version robbed it of its soul.
