Okay hypothetical what if a prime Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman were both making a record at the same time. Meat couldn't use any Jim songs but Jim had to sing all his songs without using Meat or Dodd, he had to be lead vocals.

Now in your opinion based on facts which one would make the better record?

In my opinion although I think they work best together Meat can always get good writers and make a album with his kick ass vocals with no Jim songs. But Jim would have trouble pulling off his bombastic lyrics without no other lead singers.

It's a bit unfair. Then you have to say Meat has to write all his own material if Steinman can't use another singer ;)

Jim doesn't have a pleasent singing voice (imo) so Meat would win this hands down.

It would be a completely different story though if Steinman could use another voice for his songs. Meat isn't the only person that can sing Steinman's songs but it would be hard to find a writer that can compete with Steinman.

In that case I think I'd prefer the Steinman album.

In the end I prefer them not competing but co-working

Okay fine Meat has to write his own stuff, but Jim has to be a lead singer no duets. And no wanting to rain on your parade but Meat just has a better track record with non-Jim records. They might not sell well but I believe the majority would rate BBIS, CHSIB, and HCTB were better than Jim's albums. Bad for Good wasn't that bad but Pandora's Box didn't even have that many songs. Mostly monolgue, musical interludes, and two covers.

 No offence, but I think this has the potential to be one of the most argumentitive threads on the forum. :panic:

My $00:02 in a (smallish) nutshell, Meat & Jim have both had highly successful careers in their own rights.
Jim is a great (the best) songwritter and producer. He's had big hits with other artists and with (IMHO) the best musical ever, Tanz Der Vampire.

Meat is a singer like no other. He's also written songs that I love a lot (Razor's Edge is the first that comes to mind).

They are in no way reliant on eath other, but they have always done their best work together.
Meat is the best voice for Jim's songs, and nobody has written better songs for Meat.
The total of their talent = more than the sum of their parts, and when they work together it's a very special and magical thing.
as Meat himself has said, Jim makes Meat a better singer, and Meat makes Jim a better writter.

They have a lot of mutual respect and affection for each other, something that traspires the bickering of the fans that battle their champions corner. (god, this is leaving nutshell country and heading for coconut country  ).

There is a sticky in Gereral Messages to a post where Meat says his fans should always show the upmost repect for Jimmy, and never to speak ill of him, and I think that's the best indicator we have to their relationship.

With respect, i'm going to lock this thread overnight until I (and the other mods) have had a chance to take a look with sober eyes (hey, it's Friday night and i'm only human :p ).

It might be decided that it's a worthwhile and interesting debate (in which case it'll be re-opened) or it might be decided that it's a thread that will be more trouble than it's worth.

To put it in the words of the worlds greatest songsmith, and the worlds greates singer..........
