View Full Version : Upcoming GLEE Rocky Horror Episode
I just found out there are plans underway for GLEE to have a "Rocky Horror" episode next season.
http://daveydramatic.com/project/2010/07/25/glee-will-feature-rocky-horror-picture-show-in-upcoming-season/
I put some stuff about it on my blog in case you are interested.
I messed up some coding on my site...sorry...
According to a blog on the Los Angeles Times website, it was announced during a panel discussion at Comic Con 2010 that the hit Fox television series GLEE will take on another of Fox’s mega franchises with a special Rocky Horror Picture Show episode this upcoming season.
Fox Entertainment holds the rights to both cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the cult television show GLEE. This is something that could really happen kids!
According to the report, Ryan Murphy (seriese creator of GLEE) announced the special Rocky Horror Picture Show episode shortly after Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel) answered a question that he would love to be able to sing The Time Warp from Rocky Horror during an upcoming episode.
Here is what my site should say about this. :-)
Cool ! I'll have to check it out .. thanks Dave :-)

I'd hardly call RHPS a franchise...
I'd hardly call RHPS a franchise...
From one of our legal references at work:
The term franchise refers to a type of business in which a group or individual receives a license from a corporation to conduct a commercial enterprise.
With the action figures, comic books, various recordings, trading cards, costumes, and tons of other merch, I think it is fair to say RHPS has become a viable franchise for Fox Entertainment.

Hmm....well I love Glee and I like RHPS so it sounds like a good plan to me! Actually, I would love to see Meat make a guest appearance on Glee...but is that another thread!?! :P
I know the "GLEEKS" (as fans of GLEE like to call themselves??) had a big Twitter campaign to get GLEE to do Meat Loaf...same as the effort to have them do GaGa, so we shall see.
I think Meat should play a history teacher on the show - would be fun and a way for him to live out his "if I were not a rock star" answer.

Yes, Gleeks we are! :) Funny, but I pictured a history teacher role or the role of one of the character's dads. But I think a school staff position would be great - would love to see Meat put Sue Sylvester in her place! :)

I like Glee because it isn't about forensically fighting crime, half the neighbourhood shagging each other or someone getting voted off, it's a welcome change.

That's exactly what I was thinking :))
Glee is huge, and any songs featured on it usually fly back up the charts?
it would be great if he could perform IF I Cant Have You on it, either way its good promo i guess?
wonder if meat and the NLE will do their version of Hot patootie on it and spare the glee cast from ruining it....

Exactly. But Glee is the #1 (or close to it) rated show in the USA, so it's still really great publicity for him :-)
And, like Dave already mentioned, it's great publicity for RHPS too.

I think theirs a pretty high chance. id be surprised if that gets the axe if the person who sang it is guest starring....
and that, TIme Warp, and Transvestite are the three most famous songs associated with the film.
HP would've made a fine single fer meat :D

5. Touch-A Touch-A Touch-A Touch Me
6. There's A Light (Over At The Frankenstein Place)

Thanks Vicki, Will write that one down.
I saw this morning a post on FB from Meat saying he's completed the Glee episode... yay for us ! I've been waiting for THAT confirmation ... ;) ... lol ...
Watching my local news (due to tropical storm updates) they just had a blurb about Glee. News anchors just said, now that the Britney Spears ep is over for Glee, the next BIG SHOW is the upcoming Cult Classic Rocky Horror Picture Show episode airing Oct. 26th. Projections are expecting huge Neilsen Ratings on this one episode alone and are excited for it to air.
Pretty cool to hear first hand off my local station. The one anchor lady is a self admitted Gleek though.
Well we were getting Glee at the same time as over there, but because of the Commonwealth Games, the channel that airs Glee is televising the Games, we will be a few weeks behind now!!!!! Damn. The same thing happened with House, we were getting it at the same time, then because of Easter they started showing repeats for a couple of weeks, so we got it later.

An article by Scott Collins in the Los Angeles Time discusses how brand new TV shows that started this fall are not doing well, HOWEVER:
"Viewers have turned out in droves for favorite returning shows, such as the high-school musical "Glee," which is soaring to record ratings in its second season on Fox."
So Meat's cameo role will be seen by many, many people :-) ..and I wouldn't be so quick to discount any positive effect on HCTB awareness/sales; these things feed on each other, and any big exposure is good.

i wonder if meats agreement to do Glee was stemmed from his enthusiasm for putting HP back in the set
Wonder if hed agree to this three years ao
HP may have also been added back into the set for Rocky's 35th Anniversary while also being arranged by Patti and Paul

The lyrical changes to Touch-A are absolutely unacceptable! If the material is "too much" for the demographic, then don't do it.

Listening to them, I doubt I'll actually watch the episode but I'm intrigued to see what the songs sound like.
At the moment listening to Touch-A Touch-Me, hate the lyrical changes. As someone said what the hell is the point of doing the song if they have to change the lyrics for the demographic?
Plus they dirtiest part of the song is left in there anyway in the damn chorus so it's a waste of time.
Whatever Happened to Saturday Night was good though. Although I expect singing wise they would be good, they all have singing/muscial backgrounds so I did expect them to do well here.

Yeah I agree, the show itself was ok. I thought there was going to be more of them singing and doing the play, not just talking about doing it  I thought John Stamos did a really good version of Hot Patootie, and I enjoyed the version of Time Warp :-)
I wish Meat's scene was longer ... it was the highlight of the show for me. I thought he and Barry were both hysterical :-)

Were the credits running at that point ? I didn't notice . I did see "Meat Loaf Aday" was used in the credits. I thought that cool and he did get the larger of the speaking part between he and Barry B. I liked his part. I liked "Uncle Jessie" singing Hot Patootie, too. I think I won't watch the show again, though. That Sue character is too over the top cynical and snerdy, imo. I like her much better as the shrink on Two and A Half Men. She plays cynical with a bit more of a light hand and humor on Two and A Half Men, imo.
Bottom line for me ? It was TERRIFIC seeing 'Imself on tv tonight !!! ... :D ...
OH and I liked the Time Warp finale ... :D ...

I really liked Meat and Barry together. I think Meat said (in the radio interview :??:) that they gave them both re-occuring roles ... so I'm taping the rest of the episodes this season to see if they show up again :-)
Um Tink, I didn't notice the credits either. I must have looked right through them. :)
I think the character, the "to the point" station manager, suits him well. The lines were humorous but not forced. I like that. I've watched Glee several times and I think the writing is clever. I'm far from a Gleek though. Like others I will record the rest of the season since Meat's role may be re-occurring.
I thought they did a fine job; you know despite it being aired on Fox programming. With all the censorship and what not it entails. The singing was real good, but it wasn't sexy. I'm 23, and Rocky Horror is meant to be sexy. the only song I didn't like was sweet transvestite, but i still said she was sexy. meat and barrys part was also very enjoyable. short but it worked. i was hoping for a chance to squeeze them in one last time before the show was over.

I think the only reason a lot of people watched this episode of Glee was because Mr Loaf was on it. I'm not a fan to be honest, and Bubbles is 100% right, they did make a High School Musical thing out of Rocky Horror.

I think the only reason a lot of people watched this episode of Glee was because Mr Loaf was on it. I'm not a fan to be honest, and Bubbles is 100% right, they did make a High School Musical thing out of Rocky Horror.
The only reason on HERE why people watched Glee is because of Meat, the show is well watched regardless. I watch Glee and I enjoy it, it's a bit of harmless nonsense on TV. I'm not a Rocky Horror fan at all, but Glee made it more bearable.
Of course bubbles is 100% right, that's hardly a revelation, it's obvious. The show is based in an High School and they did Rocky Horror, what the f*ck did you expect?

Glee, in a year and a half, has amassed more no. 1's than the Beatles. They are doing something right!

are you sure?
Glee being compared to the Beatles.
I saw the Rocky Horror Glee CD at Target today. 7 songs from the show just last week. Mass produced, on the shelf and $6.99 US.
Glee helped win over many new fans to Rocky Horror. We had a lot of "Gleeks" come to our show this weekend that would not have come prior, and talking with some of them after the show...they really enjoyed the movie!

Glee hasn't been compared to The Beatles, just a factual record of them having more No.1's has. Drumbum could've used any number of artists and still be factually correct.

I'm not a Gleek, but after watching the show I'd probably give a live performance of Rocky Horror a shot.

Not as a fan, but as a director of a live shadowcast version of the movie, I would say to people who are not very interested in the movie to give going to see it in a live interactive setting a shot. I hate the movie alone, but love the live experience.
Just a reminder to all the Aussies, it's on tonight at 7.30 on channel 10!!!!!!!!! :-)

Wow - pretty impressive achievement for Glee there then! However, although I haven't seen the Glee version yet, I would caution that the Rocky Horror Show theatre audience is probably somewhat more... adult... than the general Glee audience. I think you have to also be quite open minded to eg stand at a urinal where other guys are wearing fish nets and panties
Well not long now, counting down the minutes, 10 minutes to go!!!!!!!! :-)

We actually had some patrons say "you should have done it like GLEE, they did it better" - to which I wanted to say "you should have stayed at home, Rocky Horror is an R-rated movie, and I know you are not 17."
I wonder how many agree HP was the only song glee got (sorta ) right?

I think Glee got all the songs right that they performed for the audience that they were performing to. As Dave pointed out, it's an R rated movie and Glee's main target audience is teenagers.

It is what it is. It was a successful marketing tool for Fox to get the word out about Rocky. It helped put over 600 people in the seats over Halloween weekend in my theater alone - most shows across the US were completely sold out as well. However, it was not such a good thing for the Rocky Horror fan.
Glee isn't about the existing fan base though is it? It's about generating new fans through the medium of a popular TV show, hence the more amd more frequent cameo appearances by the original stars. I read recently that Springsteen has been approached about having a show dedicated to his music, along with the cameo, pretty sure it's been ruled out though (which as a long time fan is good news having heard what they did to Fire on the show aired over here at the weekend).

Don't see why not, it brought Rocky Horror to a wider audience generating new Rocky Horror fans, surely that's a good thing?

Not when a show is billed as an "interactive" and "audience participation" experience and you have high schoolers (who are under the age of 17 and should not have been sold tickets anyway) complaining that people are "talking during the movie" and "don't want to get messy" from things thrown at them. That is part of the experience. The movie is intolerable without the audience fun.

I've never been to a Rocky Horror show but I assume you're right as I think the film is dreadful.

I like some of the songs from the film and could appreciate those cut from the film and shown as videos, but as a whole, the film lives me with a queasy feel to my stomach. I've only watched it start to finish once and that was enough for me.
It is definitely a film you should see with a good, live shadow cast performing along with the film and a rowdy audience armed with rice, toast, and squirt guns shouting clever quips as the film progresses. You cannot judge this film if you have simply sat at home and watched it.

Of course you can, it's a shit film, the live show on the other hand is a different experience. Watching Phantom Of The Opera live is a different experience to watching that piece of shit crap film with Gerard 'I can't f*cking sing' Butler in it.

With apologies to Dave if I have completely misunderstood, but I think the point is that watching the film at home is not the definitive or complete rocky horror experience. I actually really like the film, but it is made into a completely different experience if you go and see it in a cinema or theatre.
Forgive me if I am wrong Pud but you mention the film version You watch at home and the live theatre version. There is a 3rd way you might not be aware of from the sound Of it... they play the fiLm in a cinema or theatre and the audience plays along by dressing up, singing along, making witty remarks, and apparently hurling toast although this is not something I have experienced in my limited number of viewings!
I think Dave is saying that it is this level of interactivity that really transforms the film, and while you certainly can judge it on its own merits without all that, its not really the whole picture.

Yes, but how many are willing to openly dress like a transvestite or wear rubber gloves etc out in public prior to seeing the film? The film will be for many the first port of call and probably wouldn't persue an interactive experience. Maybe a modern day remake is needed?

Lol - there's a question I never thought I'd be answering on the public internet at 7 in the morning!
Anyway, I presume the answer is "quite a lot" either before or after seeing the film, as it is still a cult phenomenon.
As for a remake... no. No, no, no, no, no, no, NO!
Enough with making crappy, uninspired, focus grouped, bland, pointless modern remakes of classic films. Make something new FFS and leave films that millions of people love alone. Or else I shall belt you about the mouth, and... *stops just in time*... :kickass:

From what I have read on many Cinema and Movie forums recently, I believe a deal for a remake may have been done already, with FOX doing it, instead of MTV, who were planning one a couple of years ago. Watch this space I say, as I think the ball may have started rolling on this one. ;)

I know we had 650 people we could actually sell tickets to and very few of them were in "normal" attire. We also turned away about 150+ - so quite a few.
As for a remake, I put as much faith in appreciating that as I do in appreciating someone trying to re-create a Bat Out Of Hell. If it ain't got the original pieces to play with, the puzzle just don't work.

Would I be correct in assuming your reacting is because there wouldn't be Meat Loaf in it?

To quote you Dave - I hate the movie alone, but love the live experience. So I'm not sure how you can compare Bat Out Of Hell to the Rocky Horror film when you've admitted you hate the film :wtf:
The live interactive experience would never change, a new movie would bring in a new following, just like what Glee did. Unless of course, you're a Rocky Horror snob

Lol - no, not even close!
Although the addition of Meat Loaf would certainly improve some of the recent batch of remakes, I'm just against the idea of remaking something that is already brilliant and or much loved by a huge army of fans.
Of course, I'm always happy to be proven wrong if the remake turns out to be awesome and even better than the original, but I can't think of too many that turn out that way.
No problem with remaking something that is generally regarded as rubbish or unpopular as long as the remake is better.

2007 Release of Hairspray was better than the 1988 original, so it can be done, but I don't think any director who possibly goes on to remake RHPS, will try to out-do the original, but try do bring it in a different direction. Remember, the original was not a success, it has a cult following for sure, but it still was not a success. But to be honest, I can't think of anyone who could surpass Tim Curry's performance as Frank N Furter, all the rest of the characters are easily replaceable by todays actors. Would be interesting to see how a RHPS of today will pan out. :-)

Agreed, although that wasn't really a remake. It was a film-of-the-musical-of-the-film. Must make a new word for that.

That statement is quite a good summary of why I think remakes nearly always end up :shit:
Remember, the original was not a success, it has a cult following for sure, but it still was not a success.
It's true that it wasn't a massive immediate box office hit. But it is now the 5th biggest grossing musical ever according to Box Office Mojo. The other top 4 being Chicago, Grease, Hairspray, and Mamma Mia. That's a pretty awesome top 5 imho!
But to be honest, I can't think of anyone who could surpass Tim Curry's performance as Frank N Furter, all the rest of the characters are easily replaceable by todays actors. Would be interesting to see how a RHPS of today will pan out. :-)
Tim Curry was awesome. Don't envy anyone trying to take on that role.

Mtv never did have the full rights to go ahead with the project. The current remake is being done by Fox.

That's probably because are brains are made in a way that only allows certain first impressions to stick, and any other possibilities don't get a chance.
The role of Frank n Furter would have to be someone famous who you couldn't possibly imagine in fishnets. I reckon Jonny Depp could pull it off.
He would'nt be a Transvestite if he pulled it off.:D

FOX has given the green light for a script to be done and given to them to consider. No saying they will definitely go ahead, all depends how good the script will be.

Jonny Depp, did not think of him, and I agree, he may well could pull it off.
