Fox just announced the release of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on blu ray for sometime this year. More info hasnt been published yet. It's gonna be one of the movies released for Fox's 75th anniversary in 2010.

Gotta be interesting if they can make anything decent out of such old low-budget material...

The picture quality will be a lot better than it's DVD release as it will be given a 1080p remaster, but I just hope people don't expect the picture quality to be at a standard of today's films. You will still get quite a bit of picture grain etc. When Ghostbusters was released some people felt let down of the picture quality, but there is only so much that can be done with old transfers. I quite enjoy picture grain in older films, gives it that real movie look. I wonder what they have in store for the HD audio, that should be quite cool for this release. :D

I hate, hate, hate to watch Rocky Horror on DVD...the "clean" picture drives me crazy. I mean, I saw it every freakin' week in glorious 35mm mono print glory. That is the way this movie is meant to be seen! Rocky Horror just is not Rocky Horror without missing frames and green squigglies in the print from place to place.

according to the german online magazine bluray-disc.de the BD version of the RHPS will be released on nov 5, this year. It'll come in a so-called "Media Book" with sixteen pages of unpublished photos and an introduction by Lou Adler. (imagine it a bit like the HCTB book version.)

The disc is supposed to contain previously unseen footage, such as a karaoke-version of the whole(!) show and the 10th anniversary performance at the Beacon Theater in New York.

(now correct me if I'm wrong, but wasnt that the one with Meat performing Hot Patootie?)

Sorry but i cannot stand this film, tragic i know, but true, however i do like Meat singing Hot Patootie ! and loved hearing him sing it live in the US shows !

He performed it twice. The 15th Anniversary Convention is what is shown with like 30 seconds of footage (not too impressive):

but a small like 3 second clip of him at the 10th anniversary convention is seen also in the documentary on the 25th anniversary edition where he clearly looks like (and SOUNDS LIKE!!!!) he did in 1985.

I'd imagine the majority of special features will be in standard def, but it'd still be worth getting if it is indeed on there.

From the official Fox press releases, the footage from the 10th Anniversary performance at the Beacon Theater is footage that has been "previously seen" - nothing new from that was promised from Fox. The new shadow cast footage was shot this past summer in LA and is totally new material.

Insterestingly, the list of special features still includes the point "Beacon Theater, New York City", so we might get the Loaf performing Hot Patootie in HD after all and it wasnt just a misprint...

The official Rocky Horror site (rockyhorror.com) that has all information researched and confirmed by Fox has always listed the Beacon footage as "previously seen" so there was never an official promise of anything new from Fox.

I have heard reports first hand from people who have previewed the BluRay that there are extensive issues with the color corrections - major flaw is the bed room scenes are no longer "color coded" red/blue. Another issue is the sound transfer. A lot of the audio will sound very different, and there are a few places in the movie where people are on one side of the screen with their talking coming out of the opposite speaker.

I myself have not seen the Blu-Ray edition yet, but I have heard a very different story elsewhere, here is one review from a fellow tech geek:

"My delight at finding Rocky Horror on the shelf at my local movie shop this morning has turned to full-out amazement. The picture and sound on this disc are quite simply: PERFECTION.

It's astounding. I had always assumed that "16 mm quality" was the destiny for this title. Not so. The picture is sumptuously detailed, clear, sharp, with natural fine-film grain and textures and color saturation that will stand up to the best reference 35mm sourced blu-rays you own. No hint of DNR. Rich black level and brilliant dyanmic/contrast range. No compression noise. In fact, no "digital" signature to the picture at all: just film-like perfection. And by that I not only mean it looks film-like, but like a *perfect* film.

Lossless audio 7.1 mix is fantastic... doesn't sound "wiz bang" or like the mixing engineers are trying to impress you by throwing stuff in the surrounds that shouldn't be there. Instead, it serves the film solidly and tastefully and sounds front-centered, strong, with full frequency and life-like musical textures. The treble is a bit thin, but I think that's the source recording.

You all will be impressed. I have yet to check out the extras but even if this disc had zero extras, it would be a full-out recommendation on image and sound alone.

Thats just one of the joe public reviews I seen. Transfer of a old film like Rocky Horror to Blu-ray was always going to be a task of getting perfection, but I believe Fox as done a excellent job indeed. You will notice differences, to picture and sound, but remember this was done for a HD picture transfer and audio is also HD too. From what I have been told, Rocky Horror fans are in for a treat with this Blu-Ray edition. :D

Transfer of a old film like Rocky Horror to Blu-ray was always going to be a task of getting perfection, but I believe Fox as done a excellent job indeed.

Acquiring perfection can oftentimes lead to not so positive effect. For example, I directed and produced RHPS with a live shadowcast for 3 years - every Friday night (only missing one week due to snow). To me, I find major flaws in the perfection of of the DVD transfer - both visual and audio. Just like when they did the transfer from 16/35 mm to DVD for Shock Treatment - removing the "pink" tones from the aging celluloid made the move such a new experience that some of the charm was actually lost to hard core fans. I find watching RHPS at home a daunting challenge on a good day. However, in the theater..on a big screen..with a live performance and rowdy audience - that is how I like my Rocky! It does not seem the same with a "clean" picture and fancy audio, but that is just me.

You will notice differences, to picture and sound, but remember this was done for a HD picture transfer and audio is also HD too.

This is quite unfortunate, as the clean up they did on DVD completely changed the look of the film in my personal opinion.

From what I have been told, Rocky Horror fans are in for a treat with this Blu-Ray edition. :D

The special features are all quite remarkable. I know most of the people in the International Shadow Cast - they will impress you. It is a great package, just the movie is never the same to me as when it is shown from an old 35 mm print.

I prefer RHPS on a 35 mm print, just like some prefer their music to come from a vinyl disc...it is all a matter of preference.

I received my copy yesterday (sat) and managed to have a quick test after work, and this is the best I have seen ever of Rocky Horror, both picture and audio are superb. If you have a HDTV, Blu-ray player and are a Rocky Horror fan, this is a must purchase. :D

I got the blu ray on friday and I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase.

Yes, it's not perfect, but then again - what is?

Picture-wise I think they did what they could with such old material. In parts I was astonished what they made of it, but overall the picture quality is what you'd expect a blu ray release to be. It's true though, they've taken the color code off the Brad/Janet in bed with Frank scenes. It's not as noticable during the Janet part, as this one seemed to be lit in red originally. The Brad part now appears white instead of blue though.

As good as the picture is, the real highlight for me, and the reason to switch from the DVD, is the reworked 7.1 dolby audio track. They did a great job with that one. You feel like youre really in the middle of it all. Single instruments are placed so distnctive in the mix that I've discovered a saxophone here or a guitar there, I'd never actually noticed before. Although the sound is great during the songs they did a rather sloppy job during the dialogue scenes. To that point that a switch in audio quality is clearly audible. The dialogues are mostly the old stereo mixes with a few sorround effects added - but once they start to sing all the speakers are turned up to full blast.

The extras are pretty interesting as well. Especially a rather long feature about casting the "35th anniversary shadowcast". - which takes you into the RHPS fan community quite deeply. (in a lot of ways quite similar to MLUKFC btw). You can also watch the complete shadowcast performance of the whole show, though it was a bit tricky to actually find it in the menu lol. They're basically miming the whole show in costumes to the movie soundtrack. You can either watch it picture-in-picture with the actual feature or just the shadowcast with the movie sound.

Havent watched any more of the extras yet, but I suspect the making of's etc will be similar to the ones from the DVD version.

While it offers a lot of new extras it is not the 'ultimate' release, as there's a lot of stuff missing that used to be on the dvd. For example the enjoyable audience participation audio track you could switch on and off during the movie.

If you have a blu ray player, and a good sound system it's definitely worth buying, Though honestly, if you just have your in-tv-speakers you probably wont hear much of a difference in the sound mix, which for me was the highlight of the release.

btw - I still havent got a clue what that announced "Beacon Theatre, NYC" feature was supposed to be. Couldnt find anything on the disc, and it cant be the shadowcast thing, as apparently this one was filmed in California :shrug:

It is fun knowing that I have been intoxicated with most of the shadowcasters featured on the BluRay! Just saying!

The audio remix makes actually shadowcasting the movie quite difficult. We perform based solely on audio cue, which as you can very well hear - has changed up quite a bit. Did you also notice the "enhancements" to the theater during the floor show? Very odd looking on a huge movie screen.
