View Full Version : Should Roadie Be A Cult Classic ?
I was browsing through the internet, and found many articles about Meat and his 1981 movie Roadie, and was surprised to see how many fans this movie has. Also, alot of those fans think that this movie should be deserving of cult status, just like The Rocky Horror Picture Show ? Well my question is, do you all agree ?

I thought Roadie was a shit film, but I also think Rocky Horror was a shit film too, giving Roadie a cult status really wouldn't change my opinion of it.

i agree i wasn't as impressed by Rocky horror kinda dragged as it went on, after the Loaf's part.
Haven't seen roadie but there's no real difference if a film is called a cult classic...it just gives an ego trip to some people who believe they know more then the rest in relation to watching films.
Rocky horror is trash to me, Roadie is respectable but nothing special imo.
Just my opinion btw ;-)

I absolutely love Roadie and that is evident as I need to replace my DVD as it has worn out, it gets to a certain point then dies . Not sure if it's worthey of cult status though.
I loved Roadie when I was a kid but today it appears a little boring to me.
By the way, there is a new PS game about to be released called Brütal Legend. It features a character who looks like Jack Black (but with a lot of muscles, LOL). The trailer for the game reminded me of Roadie - coincidence?
Brütal Legend trailer

Eddie Riggs was the world's greatest roadie.

RHPS gained it's cult status not because of it's quality (objectively, it's not a very good movie), but because of its following, with the audience participation and all that. You need a slightly quirky fanbase for a cult classic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_classic), and from what I know about Roadie—I'm not big on Meat's acting, so I haven't it seen it—it doesn't have much going for it to base some obsessive devotion on. I mean, no one seems to care enough to whip up a needlessly detailed Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadie_%28film%29).
You can't just go "hey, a lot of people seem to like this movie, lets just give it a cult status." Well, you can, but I'm faily confident that it wouldn't catch on.
Exactly.
The following gives it a cult status, not some committee or awards panel.

Agreed...plus, as Mike pointed out above, I am not sure what difference does it make at all...

If that were the case then Titanic would have a cult status and I don't think it has.

A VERY good point well made :))
I am surprised here that a few find Rocky Horror a crap movie, although it won't win any oscars, I though it was quite fun, Roadie also.

IMO a fun movie doesnt equal being good.
The godfather is a great movie, but certainly not fun.
American Pie is a fun movie I can watch again and again, but I'm aware that it's not a good movie.
Roadie holds the fun of a lot of Meat Loaf featuring, and so might be considered a cult classic among the fans. I personally have seen it two times I think. It's quite enjoyable to watch, but I dont worship every single line or scene.
Also I've noticed that it's mostly women who think Roadie is a cult/great/good movie and watch it endless times. Might be something to do with the old Loaf fancying :eyebrows:

But a fun movie also doesn't mean the film is not good either. There is no way you can compare something like The Godfather to Rocky Horror. Yes, American Pie you can, because the movie was made to be fun, just like Rocky Horror, and if you find a movie you quite enjoy, and FUN, you must like it and find it quite good.
Like I said, neither Roadie or Rocky Horror will ever win any sort of oscar nomination, but they are both Fun movies in their own way. Also roadie will never have the following of Rocky Horror now, but there is quite a few fans of it, alot due to the fact of many late seventies, early eighties musical talent in Roadie, this is what I found whilst browsing the internet, and the reasoning of my very first question, and poll.

What's surprising, that some people have the balls to say they don't like certain films Meat Loaf has been in?

why's that surprising?
What's surprising, that some people have the balls to say they don't like certain films Meat Loaf has been in?
There are more films that Meat's been in that I don't like than there are that I do. That has nothing to do with Meat though, I'm pretty sure I'd still not lke the film if Meat wasn't in it ... Pleasure Drivers would still be crap regardless. Likewise 51st State or Fight Club for example would still be great films with no Meat in them.
Also I've noticed that it's mostly women who think Roadie is a cult/great/good movie and watch it endless times. Might be something to do with the old Loaf fancying :eyebrows:
:)) The only movie featuring Meat Loaf I've watched "endless times" is Fight Club and it would still be my favorite movie if he wasn't in it.
Roadie is entertaining but neither good nor crazy enough to ever become a "cult classic". The only reason why I still watch it from time to time is because I like the setting of U.S. movies from the 1970s and early 1980s and because Meat Loaf's facial expression always amuses me. He has amazing thespian abilities, unfortunately he rarely gets roles in which they can really shine.
If you talk about Meat Loaf, the actor to people who aren't fans, most of them will spontaneously name Rocky Horror and / or Fight Club. I think it's predominantly Meat Loaf fans who are interested in Roadie.
What's surprising, that some people have the balls to say they don't like certain films Meat Loaf has been in?
Nothing to do with Meat being in it or not. I don't think anyone need balls to say if they like or don't like a film Meat has been in. If anyone says they love every film Meat has ever been in, I would think they are on the edge of being a Meat stalker, because Meat has made some turkeys. I was surprised, because of how few people I have chatted to, who has seen Rocky Horror Picture Show, and not liked it in some way. Like I said, they may not love it, but they find something catchy about it.

I could give you a list of the ones I don't like regardless of the fact Meat's in it or not !
IMO Meat's acting saves most of the films hes in. Hes only been in one blockbuster and the small insignifigant ones (Examples: Formula 51, Black Dog, Blacktop, ect.) Meat saves from total destruction.
Roadie is one of those movies i personally cant stand. Its not even worth cult status, it doesn't have replay value IMO. the Monsters episode he was in deserves it more.

I will take you up on that and this is my personal opinion, not keen on;
The Squeeze
51st State
Fight Club
Waynes World
Pelts
These five stand out at the moment, just not keen on these ones and I'm sure there are more but can't at this time and moment think of them.

his acting deflitely saved blacktop, not so sure about the other ones. 51st State is good because of the american/british cultural contrast, and probably SLJ. While on the other hand no one in their right mind would say Wayne's World is a good film because of Meat Loaf, yet it's an awesome movie! 8).
In Fight Club though, his part is quite important to me. Not because it's a big part, but because his grotesque appearance did a lot for the overall feel and atmosphere of the movie. I dont think it would have been as strange (=good) without busty bobby

No it didn't, it was a shit film regardless, as they say "you can't polish a turd"
I don't actually think Blacktop was the worst film, Trapped was very poor, To Catch A Yeti was no better than an episode of Falcon Crest, utter pants imo. Plus many others. What surprises me, is Meat actually accepts these roles

blacktop itself sucked, but Meat's performance, especially in the motel room scene was pretty decent. one of his best imo.

Nothings more shit though then Extreme Dating. While Meats best performance is in Hole in one
RadioMaster

I thought extreme dating was quite funny....nothing demanding, just a light comedy....but enoyable. A hole in one was too weird for me. The whole idea seemed strange...a movie that mixes stories about gansters, love and lobotomy cant be good lol
No it didn't, it was a shit film regardless, as they say "you can't polish a turd"
After having seen the movies Blacktop tries to imitate (Breakdown, The Vanishing, Duel), I second that but I also agree with RadioMaster, the motel scenes were not bad, except when the trucker started talking about his mother, that was too stereotype. There were two or three other scenes I liked but all in all the movie is not very good.
I watched it only once so far. Unfortunately, most movies with Meat Loaf are not worth a second watch, I wish he'd get better roles.
Trapped was very poor, To Catch A Yeti was no better than an episode of Falcon Crest, utter pants imo.
I have The Towering Inferno in my movie collection, so I don't feel the urge to watch Trapped again. There's only one great scene when Meat tells that other guy to shut up, which was the preliminary end to one of the boring dialogues.
To Catch a Yeti: What a cheap movie. God, I hated that Yeti. It looked like an ugly toy. I believe even children would not be too impressed by it. Anyway, I have to admit that I had to laugh about a few scenes, I really enjoyed how the hunter dealt with that annoying fat kid. I like Meat Loaf's beard and coat, it would have been great if it had been a western instead of a dull kid's movie.
nobody in the whole world would be able to save spice world!
To say something in Meat's defense, there were many great artists who embarrassed themselves in that movie. :wtf:
His best recent performance was Pelts, in my opinion.

i like Roadie but i don't think its that big enough of a movie to be a cult movie and like neil said its not well known movie
No, Roadie would not be deserving of the "cult movie" status. Honestly, it has no real following per se that continue to make it grow and thrive. It has not had the length of actual movie theater run. Heck, I have a 35mm copy of the film under my bed collecting dust.
Rocky Horror has gained "cult movie" status not because of the quality of the film, but because it has really taken on a life of its own with robust fans. What other movie still consistently sells out movie theaters on a weekly basis 33 years after inital relase. Yes, Rocky Horror does still sell that well. My show is a constant sell out, having to turn away a dozen or more people every week.
Roadie is fun, but not a "cult classic" by any means. Let is gain some television time and/or start on a midnight circut...then we shall see.
Hi Jayd i have seen both filims and i agree with you both filims are cult classic in my oppinion
