That's because the situation
was very different.
This article (and one of the other ones) is kind of misleading on the subject of Clive Davis' reception of Springsteen vs. Meat. Bruce was actually signed as a solo artist, as a singer-songwriter in the vein of Bob Dylan. His first two records (and the songs he played at his audition) weren't anything like Born to Run; in fact, he was in danger of being dropped by the label if BTR hadn't been a hit. The author almost makes it sound as if BTR was Bruce's first album. It's not a valid comparison, IMO.
