120. 40 Days

This is the START OUT OF HELL & ARRIVE TO HEAVEN topic.
Let's Go to Rock 'n' Roll!!!!!!!

40 Days (4)

I can imagine when Paul and Meat were sitting in the studio with already recorded songs and they were searching for the best pieces. When they already filled the albums up with average songs one of them said: 40 Days?

Why not? It has a place on the album in lyrics, it has a place on the album on tune, and it has a place on the album with Meat's voice. Not bad, just average.
My score: 4

I can already imagine the dislike bar to that post. It's going to be legendary :P

I'd give it a 6 out of 10. It's not bad, but it just doesn't grab me the same way Fall From Grace or Party of One has. I love the outro, though. The guitar work there is phenomenal :D

:D You're right, the only good part is the outro... So, 4.1 from me. ;)

MarkS 18 May 2012 14:13

9 love the high notes that meat is fully capable of hitting.

Meat Loaf_fan 18 May 2012 14:25

"40 Days" - maybe it's not my cup of tea, but ... Meat's vocal is fantastic :!: Lyrics are vey good. Why? Maybe, because they are refers to many important (at least to me) issues (like politics). What's more - words are my 3rd favourite from the album (very close after "Another Day" and "Blue Sky"). So you (perhaps) won't be surprised :

My score : 8/10

In my opinion ZZ Top are far from being average. The band is not on the Meat's level, but ...

I can't complain about the vocals. Yes, he sounds a bit tense when it comes to the high notes and I actually prefer the parts when his voice sounds deeper but I've heard worse. The singing is far from being "rubbish". In fact he does a pretty good job, his "raaaaaaaiiiiiiiiin" is quite impressive. I agree with it being an "average" song, though. The lyrics and the music are nothing special, aside from the guitar solo and the mandolin. I love the mandolin outro, it's one of the most interesting moments on the album.

I can imagine Meat and Paul being delighted to have this song as a fitting comment on the world's race to destruction .. "And I see the earth bending in the wind". The message fits the theme of the album perfectly, the lyrics capture that sense of impending doom yet hold out some hope of regeneration with the biblical references to 40 days and flood, and there is in my view nothing to complain about in terms of the vocals or the production. The introduction is great, Meat hits the high notes and holds them beautifully, delivers the message with feeling, and I love the way the guitar is brought to the foreground at the end. Again the sense of it being a live performance rather than a studio album is so strong.

Not a thing I'd have changed, works perfect, so 10.

I'm the opposite. 40 Days grabs me much more than Fall From Grace and Party of One did. I love that this album offers something for everyone.

I enjoyed this one from the beginning. Great message, vocals, and instrumentation. It's an 8 from me.

In the early days this was the only song on the album that I didn't really take to that much was theis song although I've never been able to say why. The vocals are fine, the musicians are fine, the lyrics are fine, it's just one that didn't really grab me like some of the others.

I wouldn't say it was a bad song by any means but I wouldn't rank it as being a personal favourite.

40 days is such a great song: meat's voice is just stunning; but also love the lyrics and the instruments. fantastic outro. and it sounds like being live :D

RSG 18 May 2012 22:52

Very much enjoyed

mtaylor315 18 May 2012 23:26

I love Meat's vocals on this track. The 'rainnnnnnnn' bit near the end is amazing. I wouldn't say 40 days is my favourite on the album, but its still a strong song in my opinion.

Overall, for me, a score of 7/10

40 Days is a masterpiece, 10/10.

PanicLord 22 May 2012 21:42

9 - awesome song, bit of a down south bluesy feel to it, and a good message of hope.

Kathy 23 May 2012 21:56

9.5

See "All of Me" for explanation

The Flying Mouse 27 May 2012 20:37

 Like the previous song, there is something of a slow build into the kick ass chorus, but there is a little more spark to the fuse.

I'd like to hear this live 8)

For me it's got to be a steady 8 at the least.

White of High 05 Jun 2012 22:39

Average: 7.80 (93.6/12)

Wario 06 Jun 2012 04:39

Needs to be in a medley... Imagine....

Home By Now (Intro)
The Storm
40 Days
If It Rains
Stand In The Storm
Home By Now (ending)

Song itself: 7/10. Good CHorus, Good production, Fantastic Drums, decent song nothing too special or unique besides the drums.
