The Twelve - Patti in NY

Finally something slightly closer too home for you Steph lol.

The Twelve at China Club

Neil Berg, the creator of "100 Years of Broadway" and the composer of the coming musical Grumpy Old Men, introduces a new theatrical event – The Twelve~ – an APAP showcase at the China Club (268 West 47th) on Sunday, January 13 at 7PM.

This will be a 90-minute concert presentation with a six-piece rock band. Rehearsals start the week of January 7.

The cast includes Lawrence Clayton (Jesus Christ Superstar, Dreamgirls), Rob Evan (Jekyl and Hyde, Tarzan, Les Miserables, Michael Lanning (Civil War, voice-over) and Danny Zolli (Jesus Christ Superstar). Plus Aisha de Haas (Rent, Dreamgirls), Patti Russo (of Meatloaf and We Will Rock You).

The band features Alex Skolnick (guitar), Neil Berg (piano), Roger Cohen (drums), Dave Baron

Did it say...FREE showcase???

Deb 28 Nov 2007 14:02

Yep :-)

mszee 28 Nov 2007 14:03

Why? It's a bit strange...trying to find out more about this...

mszee 28 Nov 2007 14:07

OK...checked it out...it's a night club for/with celebrities...no wonder it's free...and with no tickets good luck getting in or even seeing anybody older than 25...

Plus they don't show anything yet on their page...

Ankie 28 Nov 2007 19:09

Another familiar name pops up in this article about that show!

mszee 28 Nov 2007 19:26

I now understand why it's a free event...this apparently is a club with exclusive clientele - this is promotion...

Apparently even Meat was singing in that club recently...which I didn't hear anything about...exclusive is as exclusive does...

Ankie 28 Nov 2007 19:32

Isnt the word showcase, as mentioned in the article posted by Deb, telling it is promotion?

Correct me if I am wrong though!!

Deb 28 Nov 2007 20:05

Looks like Rob Evan is also in this....

Evan, Lanning, Zolli, de Haas and More Set for Free The Twelve Concert

Producer Neil Berg will present a free showcase of The Twelve Jan. 13, 2008, at the China Club in Manhattan.

"I have been developing this rock/theater concept for several years, and am finally ready to debut it," Berg writes on his official website.

The evening at the New York City club will feature the talents of Dreamgirls' Lawrence Clayton, Tarzan's Rob Evan, Civil War's Michael Lanning, Jesus Christ Superstar's Danny Zolli, Rent's Aisha de Haas and rock singer Patti Russo. The singers will be backed by Alex Skolnick (guitar), Neil Berg (piano), Roger Cohen (drums), Dave Baron (bass) and Greg Lukins (guitar).

Frank Fagnano is the sound engineer for the 90-minute concert. Doors will open at 6:30 PM for the 7:15 performance.

Since this is on MY SIDE of the pond [for once], I'm seriously considering making the drive to see Patti. Anyone else seriously thinking about going?

Yes, and Antonio Banderas has to be in back in Spain to visit his family...so he can't accompany me...

On the brighter note...it doesn't look to me like a plain mortal can make this thing...

And Rob Evan is honestly nothing to write home about...especially if you're a Meat's fan...

Deb 13 Jan 2008 13:33

Wow this came around quick!

Have fun anyone that's going :-)

We need details

Break A Leg Patti!!!

Deb

Ankie 14 Jan 2008 11:52

Hasn't anyone been there?!?! Pics, reviews... Please!!!

Deb 14 Jan 2008 12:06

I know someone who was :-) Just have to wait for them to get home! lol

citydweller 14 Jan 2008 21:25

I guess that's where I come in.

Okay, I'm home. Deb, you would be proud. I got there early, waited in line, AND sat in the front...........it was just like you were there with me!! I know I'm a frustrating student, but you've taught me well. I'll be the first to admit that there are some songs/performances I like primarily because Patti is a part of them or has lent her voice to a project, but this show was just great from start to finish. As the last note finished, I wanted the whole thing to start again! The story line of The Twelve will probably make more sense as a full theatrical production, and this was just a showcase of the music and lyrics. The music was rock, the lyrics were powerful, and every artist on stage brought a performance that could knock the roof off the place!! Patti joined in several ensemble pieces and had two solo performances as well...........one as the Devil herself  (always wanted a reason to use that icon) singing a powerful yet entertaining song called "All Doors Will Open," and one as Mary Magdalene, a beautifully moving number called "No Fence Around My Heart." I know it's probably too much to hope The Twelve will have this entire cast in final production, but that sure would be some show..............

I'll see if any of my pics are half decent and then make Deb post them........as I'd surely screw it up :D

Deb 14 Jan 2008 21:38

The wanderer returns :-)

So glad you got to the front! Hope the weather was still as warm as it was earlier in the week lol. And I was with you lol, I was that little noise you kept wondering what it was....
saying mind the dog pooh! lol
God damnit, why didn't I stay on a few days longer! all i've done since I got back is cool and clean!

Sounds really cool :-) Patti as the  eh... A far cry from reality :saint:
It'd be great for The Twelve to have the same cast and be a full blown show, but here in the UK lol. Either that or me, Dave and the kids have to come and live with you :D

Hurry up and send me the pics :-) I really can't wait to see these.

Deb

citydweller 14 Jan 2008 23:01

Don't wait up. I'm working on them, but I have to run in to work for a meeting right now.

citydweller 15 Jan 2008 17:31

Page looks great, Deb! Thanks for putting it together so quickly. Photos look best when viewed in thumbnail size  Sorry about the quality.

The pics are great considering where you were. These places don't usually allow cameras do they? The sscans are great as well.

Great pics Steph/. Thanks for doing this also Deb.

citydweller 15 Jan 2008 21:08

She's really supposed to be "The Devil" as Janis Joplin would have played her..........that was the fun part. Trying to figure out which rock icon the performers were channeling in their portrayal of the apostles ......and the Devil

Deb 15 Jan 2008 22:11

Thanks Anji :-)

Sounds even more interesting Steph

BTW What was Rob Evan like? I forgot he was there with all the excitement

citydweller 15 Jan 2008 22:27

Yes, thank you Anji.

I was pretty excited to finally see him perform something live. His voice was strong and his stage persona fairly relaxed. It's hard to make vocal comparisons between him and.........well........other artists when the songs are new and unfamiliar. I would have loved to hear What Part of My Body or We're Still the Children......but wrong time, wrong gig. You can see him in that first picture--with Patti off to the side.

Deb 15 Jan 2008 22:33

Ahhh yeah, now I can see it's him, DOH.... Which part did he play Steph?

djfierce 15 Jan 2008 22:39

sounds cool steph

I'm glad you got in and even better getting a good position.

citydweller 15 Jan 2008 23:08

Even got a chair to sit on, joining a lovely couple there to cheer on Alex Skolnick on guitar.

There were more songs and characters than there were performers. That said, several performers sang multiple parts. I believe Rob Evan sang the part of John. I was not looking at the playbill with each song, so I can't quite recall if he sang other parts as well. There were multiple songs with the entire ensemble on stage or at least several members joining in a song. The playbill doesn't convey all of that and I just can't recall. Sorry about that.

Couldn't agree more Di  Also means I get to see you

Ohhhhh I sooo wish i'd stayed on in NY :( Why weren't we all just born rich :?

citydweller 16 Jan 2008 13:17

Thanks for finding those, Deb. I'm so glad real pics finally surfaced.........there were certainly enough cameras there :D What I'd really love is the footage from the video camera that was three feet in front of me..........it would certainly help my memory out a lot

I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with saying "lovely" so often.......sounded very nice, actually. I'm sure we Americans do and say many things that raise eyebrows elsewhere...........like put cold fruit on the same breakfast plate as hot eggs or pancakes. Will we ever learn??????

Haven't come across too much else about the show. A few people did comment on a broadway related messageboard. Here's the link:

I apologise if you thought i was being funny with you in any way Steph, it was all meant in jest hun ;)

citydweller 21 Jan 2008 16:41

Of course :D Right back at ya! I go to Patti's gigs for the music, of course, but also for the private lessons Deb has been giving me in how to be British. I already try to use the words slagging, bit, and lovely as often as possible in my daily coversations, despite the odd looks. It's just so hard to pull off without the accent. I think I've failed tea preparation and tipping. And then the lessons ended when Deb told me I'd have to start eating that black sausage stuff with my baked beans in the morning:yikes: Maybe next Patti could schedule something in Australia......I've always wanted to try Vegemite. Maybe the tipping rules are easier to learn over there!!

Me and you both...when I started calling everybody a "git"...I had to give long and winding explanation of what it is...so I've stopped...

And as to Vegemite...ummm...if you ever in NJ...I think I still have some since Australian ML fans visit...I might have eaten it one time...maybe...

Don't get too excited. Vegemite is the same as Marmite, as in they're both made from yeast extracts. Vegemite however is less superior than Marmite, although don't be confused with Australian Marmite and British Marmite, as they're different. British Marmite is the best and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, I have my Marmite imported ;)

Pud

citydweller 22 Jan 2008 00:28

Thanks, Pud. You just saved me some very expensive airfare.........:-P

That said, you've compared one product I've never had to another product I've never had. Guess I missed my chance last month when I was over in the UK. Next time, I guess. We'll just have to see what part of the world Patti's next gig is in and take it from there. I know "The Twelve" was just here in the states, but if we're lucky enough to get the next gig, too, I'll bring enough scrapple for everyone in the class! And speaking of Pennsylvania treats, the TV is on and there's a promo for next month's run of WDTW in Phildadelphia on right now.......anyone REALLY want to try that scrapple?

Thanks to my Yanky 'non marmite liking' friend the first of the videos from The Twelve is now on youtube. It starts off on its side but the camera turns about 30 secs in lol.

djfierce 20 Apr 2008 19:42

lol Steph...you're as talented with a camera as me  and we did warn you on the marmite thing lolol

Seriously though thanks..the sound quality is awesome for a vid, she is truly amazing, lol Deb you read my mind just as i was typing  You mustve had a hell of a night Steph.

citydweller 20 Apr 2008 20:07

Well, whoever it was who took this video must have not realized his or her camera couldn't flip the video.........or else the performance was so good he or she fell over and took a second to recover.

So the UK has this Marmite stuff which is, in my humble opinion, quite awful.
You have these annoying hot and cold water taps, and the never ending supply of dizzying roundabouts. Yet you still manage to get almost all the really great performances........................a bit of a never ending source of envy.

Except for The Twelve :D

So this Yank is gonna cherish THIS one because it was REALLY, REALLY good......................and it was here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

djfierce 20 Apr 2008 20:28

lmao good on ya hun :))

And i'm glad you envy our taps too ;)

Deb 20 Apr 2008 20:38

More like 30 seconds to recover lol.

Well seeing as we're so unlucky with our taps and stuff i'd say we deserve these really great performances :-)

I just wish i could have been at THIS one with you!
